WOW... I love Tull, my favorite band of all time, always will be. But watching Ian here point his finger around in the air reminds me of some old jewish guy in a new york deli complaining about one thing or another... "look, it's all lean I tell ya, if you don't like it go down the street to the Italian deli."
I think Ian needs to be anchored to a spot with a mic & stand like he use to be. loose the headset.
ian was one of the first adapters of the headset. Also ... he was never much rooted to one spot. I think Ian had some funny ideas about how to run a band and I think he used to tell everyone how to ham it up on stage. Look at old videos of poor jeffrey h-h and the ridiculous jumping around he had to do. He looked so stupid .. not to mention how hard that must have been to playh the bass - ugh. music is not athletics.
@justgivemethetruth yeah, he was always moving around, but when he sings he is at the mic stationary. I know Ian was told early on by Terry Ellis to think of himself more as an entertainer, no doubt over the years he pushed that on the other members.
don't feel bad for Jefferey Hammond, he was admitedly the least talented of Tull's members he was hired more for his personal beliefs that mirrored Ian's than anything else. being an artist I always figured it was his idea to be what he was.
IA a vocalist of two instruments, his lyrics and flute, and while he maybe not on top form with his lyrics his flute playing is as good as ever + he's done how many gigs in 40 years and still non stopping?!
this was great. minstrel came out nice. it's a good combo. acres wild cool that they did it. andrew giddings. he could have done it in the regular register.
Ian will be 63 this year. The voice problems go way back - I first noticed them on the Under Wraps tour. What Ian has done in recent years is push his voice less, lowered the key of a few songs and, which is a shame but he's got no choice, sings a little behind the beat to get the higher notes. I wish could be different, but then I wish John Glascock, John Evans and Barry Barlowe were still in the band, and that can't be either. Still a wonderful musician and the nearest thing I have to a hero.
This is at an intersection of a number of Tull problems. IAs voice is weak in mid-90s. Second, his brief experiment with the head attached microphone seemed to throw off his stride in terms of singing. Once he moved back to a stationary mike he regained a lot.
I saw Ian this year in 2009 (what is left of it? 45 minutes!)
I thought he sounded excellent. Better than ever if you ask me, and I have seen gim every year here in Seattle for years, and years, and even.....more years!
Again, his voice is failing. I saw him as Ian, not Tull, at the State Theater in Detroit. You could tell there were health issues. He would play a song or two, than sit in a couch with a local DJ and discuss his career. Once rested, he would play again. Poor concert. He did come out strong, however, indicating that he knows how to perform. The rest dis not live up to the beginning!
His voice is much better now but I do not think he can sing this song anymore like he could in the 70s. This is terrible to hear his voice in such a manner.
Part of the problem also seems to be the equipment. No doubt there's equipment that can make him sound better without straining. Ian has apparently lost some of his Locomotive Breath. Probably from years of smoking? Too bad he hadn't taken up diving instead.
So, how old is he now?
I like the madison square garden 1978 thick as a brick video so far the best.
Although, the complete video seems to be a little out of sync.
heheh, lost his locomotive breath.. I sat 3rd row in the Under Wraps concert and was severly bummed out when I heard his voice. Chipmonk Tull. but he is still a god in my book.
I have seen concerts where his voice just drops out. It just is not there for what seems like seconds at at time. Also he seems to be always catching up with the music. It's really disconcerting - to have this energetic driving hard music pushing forward, and ian's voice poking behind like a stubborn mule only coughing out notes at the last second, it's constantly annoying. This video is a pretty terrible performance in my opinion.

i play the flute in band and i plan on getting better so if he dies im replaceing him idc if anyone is offended by this but i just hope he died so i can be one of the best rock bans in the world >:)
Hah, Great Minds Think Alike, It doesnt matter that you have -4 votes, ian gettin awefully old, its time for someone to step up and keep the progressive flame alive!
@themountainviewguy at this point Martin, also. I would be very disapointed to go to a Tull show and not see Martin, or Doane for that matter. I also wish Dave Peg had never left.
it's like David Palmer said, Ian Anderson is Jethro Tull, but there are a few guys I can not imagine him without.
When I discovered Tull was 1970 - my favorite lineup though even as Aqualung was being made the band was changing. Loved Evan, Cornick, Bunker, Barre, but also Hammond-Hammond and Barlow. I never got much attached to individual musicians after that point .. where everyone was fired or let go or whatever the story was. I do like Perry since I saw the Divinities concert and ever note and beat was perfect. My sense of Ian is tarnished and deflated but I respect his talent
@justgivemethetruth Barlow was the best drummer, no doubt about it. Perry is a very close second, his talent is the reason he has lasted so long. I met him not long ago, very nice guy, very engaging.
my favorite line up would be, Ian, (dahh, right?), Martin, Pegg, Barlow, Even, and Palmer. this is the line up I seen first on the Stormwatch Tour, I think Cornick is perhaps the best 'rock' bassist they have had, and can't picture anyone but Perry now after almost 25 years.

i saw them live in 2007, and they were the BEST concert ive ever seen, that was the tour with Lucia Micarelli who was amazing at violin, and they played Aqualung, it sounded better than the recorded album it was great, the sound balance was amazing too, i went to see them in 1995 ir 96 and they were too loud, they were the only concert i ever walked out of, my little baby ears were hurting so much
IA's voice was very good during 1999-2001, and an obvious improvement over the past several years. In 1986, he sounded quite good, and during 1987-90, he was still pretty consistent, with a thick voice, and good range. Nowadays, his voice is quite thin (as evidenced by this video.) However, the more he sings something, the better his performance of that piece becomes.
Well the instrumental parts of Teacher and Acres Wild, (an old favorite that I believe was not even played on the Heavy Horses tour) worked out pretty well. For all the foibles with IA's voice, I believe it has sounded better 99 til now, then 86 thru 98, the vocals to all these songs were beyond his reach then, maybe not now.
I wish they'd performed Acres Wild back when Heavy Horses came out. Or if they did, I wish there was a video of it available :/

What do you see when you buy tickets for "Ian Anderson" and not "Jethro Tull" headlined? Seriously...a flute recital? FJA NJ a8873@aol.com
