I've looked at bringing a child into this world from both sides now, and there's really no illusions about it; how I figure, it's about equally cruel on the world as it is on the child. That's why kids have to come up with impossible big, friendly, genius imaginary friends, e.g. what Hobbes is to Calvin, to compensate for the scarcity of them in the real world. And if they don't?!! Well, they end up another clone, haunted by the sounds of children's laughter in the street, like PJ song, "Black"!
This song is so fucking true it spoke to me directly the first time i ever heard this, didnt knew it was an actual song by the Ramones aswell.. GREAT SONG!

@adsones Jesus is God and became a fully grown mature man who accomplished the imposible mision of saving manking of their sins. He was also the most contracultural character history has ever seen, changing and modeling the whole global culture with just 3 years of ministry. A lot more could be said about him, but there's no one else you can call "my own personal Jesus" without revealing a huge ignorance about Jesus.
My dear, dear, dear friends. I am such a fool, who "don't need no education", please, don't bite me and help me. Who did write this song? Ramones, Tom, Santa Claus?(
"(Growing up is) an excruciatingly difficult goal since it runs contrary to the most central laws of nature - change and renewal- yet a goal miraculously attained by everyone in our culture except for a few misfits."
I first heard this song when I was 13 years old. Then and there I understood what it would be like to be an adult. Now almost 20 years later, it's all come true. I wish I hadn't grown up.
When I was a little kid my parents were teling me that if I eat my food I will grow up. So I thought that if I don't eat it I wouldn't grow up... I tryed it but unfortunately it didn't work...
A fucking epic song. Always loved Tom Waits' goofy haggard sounding voice but he wrote a lot of meaningful songs. "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" makes a whole lot more sense to me today than it did when I was 12. Back then I thought it was just fun and goofy, but now I'm over 3/4 of the things he's talking about. I went from being a kid to having a house, married and in a dead-end job in literally the blink of an eye. The man is a poet, what can I say?
The two versions both have a completely different feel. When something shitty happens to me, I listen to this version, so sad and bluesy. When I am fed up with work, or can't go do something badass because of obligations, I listen to the Ramones version. Waits wrote it, give the man some credit. No one can hold a candle to Waits from a songwriting perspective.
if you want to follow the flock go right ahead, enjoy your ignorance, I was just offering you that enlightening pill, stop using lol its really annoying, stay blind, this conversation wont go anywhere, you are stupid in an intelligent way so there will be no helping you
ha I just said art is dead, and you say that life is art, yes Im the blind one, listen to me fool, people who see life as a constant herd of sheep moving without a shepherd are wise, you see that, good for you, but those that stand and do nothing but complain about it, are more useless than the sheep, what il it be then? you gonna be a sheep or a wolf?
@TheSnakeSkull No I specifically mean hipsters. College kids who for some reason picked up from Pitchfork media that he was artistically valid, and now take their newfound knowledge and flex it on youtube in the form of pseudo-esthetic debates about what real music is.

This song is about being disillusioned with the "American Dream." Where growing up represents the happiness we're promised when we get the house, 2.5 kids, garage, picket fence and gas guzzler. We're folks who "turn into things that we never want."
@agiambrone Well I heard that it is about the fact that Tom stopped drinking at this point and started being a proper husband and father, and he misses his carefree life.
The difference between Tom Waits version and The Ramones is that The Ramones didn't want to grow up from what they have seen and heard about form the grown ups around them. Tom Waits lived it and wants to go back to that simplistic childhood. I think we all wanna be kids again and NEVER grow up. Especially how you see the world getting so fucked up.. Then again, was it always fucked up and we grew up?
You can't compare the Ramones and Tom Waits. The Ramones kick ass. Tom Waits is a genius. It's like trying to compare Einstein to Von Braun. The Ramones are going to tell you that Waits is by far the more talented artist. He's an American original. There will never be another like him. Not to take anything away from the Ramones. Waits is by far the genius here.
@AnaAerophina thank you! they run the same discussion with NIN and Johnny Cash with the song 'hurt'.. 1 song, 2 complete different versions, I like them both! greetings to all non-haters!
I don't think that it's worth compare this version (the original) with the Ramones' one. The version made by The Ramones is good, but Tom Waits is another thing, more artistic, less conventional. In my opinion, this song by Ramones is a good expression of the unrully "teen spirit", and that is great, but this song by Tom Waits means another beautiful things, and I'm sure that I'll listen to until the end of my days.
@Horaciow14 That's cool dude it's totally your own perspective so I can't disrespect that. I will say that if this original version was not this awesome, if Tom Waits was not such a badass, then the Ramones never would have bothered covering it. Gotta respect this version for that much of it.
