Was that comment meant for me?! I'm not at all anti Irish and if you listen to flogging molly it can't be the fact it's rocked up a bit that makes you think it's anti-Irish...
Or were you talking to BendThatBullet? YT's sometimes with comments. I agree if you meant him although he might just dislike the band like my stepdad (Dubliners fan) does. Rock isn't to everyone's tastes.
to add to that, in the UK folk tradition, a wild rover is usually a travelling workman, living life as it comes, taking any jobs and with no fixed home, similar to a "hobo" in the states i think.
sorry but Guinness is not a beer for the rest of the world. it has to little alcohol and taste like old coffee water. Visit the Oktoberfest in Munich and taste beer from Central Europe. Thats what I call a real beer.
I usually like Dropkick's versions of songs, but holy man, this is the worst cover of 'The Wild Rover' I've heard. It sounds so pop-punk.
If you listen to the Dubliners, even, Ronnie's voice is old and gruff, and makes the song sound... "true?" Also, their melody is way faster, whereas this version is soft sounding, which is a shame, considering the content of the song.
'Adolf' refers to a much older post. What I'd like someone to tell me: where does the actual melody originate? Someone has mentioned a German song with this tune. I was in N. Italy once, and a student was sat on the steps playing this, but with words in an Italian dialect. I was sat next to a guy from S. Italy, he said it was a trad. song from his region! And I always thought it was a Scotti - er, Iri - er, Celtic-FC-supporters song!(?)
The first recorded instance of thise song is actually in Scotland about 100 years before the Dubliners were even an itch in their dads balls. Though we are not sure of the exact history of this song, we do know it pre-dates 1848, and it commonly accepted to be temperance song, so no later than 1829. As with almost all songs of this age, we don't know who wrote it. The first modern recording (as in on a record/LP, tape or CD) was actually the seekers, not the dubliners.
What's the story with the jealousy scottish people posting on videos of the dropkick murphys seem to have for irish people. The amount of bullshit claiming Irish successes for scots is incredible. I'm sure you have history of your own so why try to steal ours.
I'm not Scottish, I'm English. And there was no jelousy in my original post, mearly a factual statement, they were debating the origin of the song, and as I happen to know it I answered them. It is a fantastic song, whoever first sang it, or wrote it regardless of when and where.
Oh, and just a little footnote - scotland is part of Britan, making the Scots brits to ;)
And it's just that there was a host of other similar posts on dropkick murphy songs, I wasnt disputing yours in particular, but the whole scottish superiority thing in general.
But while we're at it, source?
Fuck the Brits. No offence meant but please get the fuck out of our country.
My source is a book called The Scottish Nation 1700 - 2000, I forget who the author is, but google tells me Professor T.M. Devine and that it was published in 2001 on penguin should you wish to get a copy yourself.(Though there are many others)
There is also a clue in lyrics themselves - "I took from me pocket ten sovereigns bright"
The sovreign was (as far as I know) never an accepted currancy in Ireland - howver I could easily be worng, as I dont study the mint, just musical folklore.
man im half scottish, half irish. ive grown up from a very young age with trad music from both countries and ive honestly never heard anywhere of it being scottish. i am interested though, can you prove it?
without sounding like a total geek check it out on Wikipedia. I was surprised too when I was told but suppose the best things always come from Bonnie Scotland lol!!
yes Scotland have produced some great songs like Scotland the brave and this, but the Irish take the cake for ballad and rebel songs, Fields of Athenry, The Foggy dew, Michael Collins, The Soldier's Song among others
The Irish even used the bag pipes long before Scotland but thats a different story
ye your right...learn something new everyday..i was always sure it was of irish origin until i read that some scottish lad called Gavin Greig composed it...top song all the same!!

In this context a Wild Rover is a young man who is only interested in women, drinking and fighting.
I assume that is true to some extent anywhere in the world. Please don't think that all Americans are as rude as the previous post.
