I just read that the guy at 5:05 isn't actually Christopher Reeve, they didn't shoot a remaining shot with him at the time and needed an insert with Clark back at the window. Slick!
I LOVE THE CHEMISTRY OF REEVE AND KIDDER HERE :) JUST SHOWS MUCH OF THE SUPERMAN-LOIS TANDEM.SO NATURAL!!! I LOVE CHRISTOPHER REEVE!!! MISS HIM VERY MUCH! NONE LIKE HIM. BUT REALLY, WHEN ROUTH CAME, THAT GREAT BIG PASSION AND HOPE FOR SUPERMAN CAME BACK TO ME AGAIN. SUPERMAN LIVES ON!
The only really great thing that came out of Lester replacing Donner was the selection of Ken Thorne as composer. He built on John Williams' cherished score, while adding some unforgettable contributions of his own, like the chilling Zod/villains motif that would reoccur so often in II and III. I just wish that didn't have to come at the cost of Donner's original vision for the movie, which even in its skeletal existing form, seems vastly superior in nearly every way.
One more thing, not to you, DarPower or anyone else. I think that they should make another cut. I think the best one would have the right amount of material from Lester's theatrical cut, and Donner's reconstructed cut, and the extended 3 1/2 hour Television network version. whatever! Enjoy the movies!
Besides, this cut, like MANY HAVE SAID BEFORE! is an expirement. It was an expirement by Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz to see what their version what have looked like. It is still incomplete for it was never finished. anyway, this cut (i like it better than lester's version) is supposed to be a companion piece to Lester's Superman II. It is not supposed to replace it or stand on its own. Just a WHAT-IF and a great one at that!
@darpower1, um seriously? If you hate the donner cut and it makes you feel uncomfortable (dude you have problems) then don't write about it here. If you hate it, then don't bother to write about it or watch it. Just go watch the Richard Lester version. And leave us who enjoy this cut to do so!
@Xergius it's the original version of Superman 2, almost the way it was intended but never finished and so never made it to the cinema.
Instead Donner was replaced by richard lester, who turned it into the final (lower-rated) film. In 2006 the Donner-version was finally released on DVD, so now we can watch the movie as it should have been.
I love this and I love, love, love Christopher Reeve. There's never be another Superman like him. Why they feel the need to keep remaking it for the big screen I don't know. Christopher Reeve's Superman still holds up PERFECTLY after 30 years!
much better... in fact this scene treats the audience like adults... unlike the lester version, where it just feels like a kids movie... and i think thats what happened... the salkinds wanted a kids movie... and ya cant have lois shootin superman in a kids movie... but i think when movies make "kid" movies ya end up with lamo shit like the phantom menace... hollywood listen up...stop making kiddie movies..no one likes em
@NomadRepublic You have to remember that the Donner Cut was NEVER the complete version that Donner intended because he got replaced by Lester. The Lester cut is too comical & inconsistent & totally shite! Having seen the Donner Cut, it all makes sense how Clark Kent finally receives his powers back, amongst other inconsistencies. If Donner had opportunity to completed Superman II at 100%, this movie would have pissed all over Lester's version.
@captcrais101 That part was a flaw with the Donner version. But overall Donner's scenes make the movie better, particularly the scenes with Gene Hackman - the longer version of the "promises were made, gifts exchange" scene is the best scene of either mix of the film, as it shows Luthor begging for mercy and Superman deciding to risk trusting Luthor. Hackman and Reeve execute that scene (and all the others) with aplomb.
Lester is 80 years old, I know, but he can still fuck his movie, and Warner Brothers van fuck with a ranch of stinky farmanimals for making so many shameful disgusting things to there comicbook-ikons in cinema.
i can sorta see why this might be cut from the regular one we see, i mean she does this to try out superman, then does it again at niagra falls, kinda to much of the same thing, although both the scenes would be to much, id have prefered this scene to the niagra falls in the water scene
@prlad85 yes he destroyed it. he & the salkinds are to blame. what were they thinking ? @ the end i. salkind admitted that lester did not put his heart into the project. 30 yrs. too late. even now we fans got to see the original story but still i'm angry. i hated the SII lester cut & SIII. if r. donner had done all the SUPERMAN movies they would have been megahits like star wars, batman, spiderman, rush hour, etc. ****
I love this. Instead of simply jumping out the window and catching her, he calmly blasts his place of employment and humiliates Lois, destroying precious watermelons in the process.
i enjoy and respect what Donner did for II, but i though it was a little far-fetched for Lois to jump out of a skyscraper window just to persuade Clark to show his real identiity. Jumping into Niagara Falls seemed a little more realistic. Same goes with the fake bullets scene in the DC. I wonder why Donner filmed 2 endings to II when it came to the fate of the villains. In one deleted scene, you see the villains being escorted by the arctic police, but in the final cut they are killed.
@msmithstud i havent seen the one when they are escorted but it had something to do with that actor they hired to play the dad of superman. yeah, something went down, and they cut the scene when he played and escorted them cuz of the tiff the producers had with the dad actor
@landline00 nobody's nitpicking. Pointing out some contradicting scenes. In the DC explain how does superman turn back the world , but the bully in the diner scene remembers him when he goes back.??????
@JOKAWILD26 when turning back the world at the end of II, he also reversed the damage committed by the 3 villains. You can see the Sof Liberty torch, Coke sign, and Washington Monument repaired as the world was being turned back along with the villains prisoned again in the phantom zone. Immediately after that scene, it shows the Daily Planet office without any damage.
@msmithstud to turn back time, like he did in part one, their should have been 2 supermans,, the superman that allready lived thru that time and saved all those other people, and damage that was happening,, turning back time to save lois and ignore all the other damage that happen, then all those people would die,, but their should be the one saving that damage, untill it catches up in time, with the other superman to become one,, same goes for part 2, so he can choose what he is going to change
@msmithstud The bully and the people in the diner don't remember Clark. They don't even know who he is. People get confused about it because the diner owner mentions just spending a fortune to get the joint fixed. But fixed from what? It could have been from anything.
i mean im a great fan too but everything in donners cut just bothers me, it does a horrible job at connecting superman 1 compared to the original which wasnt trying to in the first place. the idea of lois jumping, the two having sex before the 'talk', how cold jor-el was, the recycled music scores, the retarded flying around the world thing twice and yes i know it was supose to happen in sup 2 but it already didnt make sense. to me this was nothing more than a deleted scenes montage and really!!
I'm a HUGE fan of Chris Reeve! And for years I have longed to see the Richard Donner cut bcuz I have always said the only good superman movie was the first one in '78...But this original version; the version we were intended DOES look much better. This is the real Superman II!!!
Agreed! The second movie was a 'bubblegum blockbuster'. The first one has the weight an archetypal depiction deserves. Donner and Mankiewicz would have made an excellent series. The original is precious ... treated with the reverence it deserves! And Christopher Reeve IS Superman.
These Donner/Lester scenes are really cool. It's a shame they were never put into production when the film originally came out, but at least we get to see them now.
Yup. I want this movie, i think this is the REAL Superman II as originally intented, with just seeing this bit, i'm convinced that it's better. Still, the new effects make it look a bit foward of the time as it should be, but anyway it's great. I want it to see.
