I love Paul Weller's energy, but i just heard Dr. John's original, and the menacing voodoo vibe is completely missing from this version - "I can make you stutter" makes a lot more sense when you're getting a Louisiana witchcraft creepout.
Have seen Mr Weller many times and have great respect for the man BUT this cover does not hold a candle to Steve Marriott / Humble Pie. Why you may ask ? Well because their cover is totally fooking excellent.
@1968tjg pretty hard to live up to Humble Pie's version, but don't forget the original by the good Dr.John. check out his accoustic piano version sometime, that man is coooooooooooooooooooool!!!! met him in Chicago quite a few years back, a great showman and artist
@BLUESMANRONCHICAGO Thank you for your feed back. The original by Dr. John is Fantastic but Steve Mariott is my "Musical Hero" So I am always very bias towards Steve/ Humble Pie/ SmallFaces. Kind Regards
Interesting note to Pogues fans out there -- Shane threw in the "Kon kon the kiddy kon kon, I walk on gilded splinters" part at the end of some of their live performances of the song "USA."
This takes all the Southern drawl, voodoo psychedelia and creepy awesomeness out of the song. This guy tries too hard and the band is wrong for the song.
The first cover version I ever heard of this was Marsha Hunt. It was an education. Marsha was too white to sing it (Mac Rebennack was black enough to write it).
this isn't the best version for chrissake. that goes to either the original or Jonny Jenkins - both so ball-breakingly good can't decide which I prefer.
I still love Dr. John's version the best. It reminds me of Louisiana Bayou country, where my family is from and it's not to rock and roll but more soulful and southern sounding.
But this is better than Cher singing it, have you heard that woman trying to sing this song. OMG! THE WORST
How much did musician get paid to play on her version?
Just brilliant, thanks for this. Notice the smile he gives the backup singers when they miss their cue for repeating back "till I'm murdered/dead" after the first verse? How great.
they all show off a bit in this one dont they!!

Such a horrible, whitebread cover. Someone said it below, but the menace and soul of the original is totally absent.

Great version! Almost as good as the original, but way better than Weller's studio version. The man has taste!

Paul is GOD!
he id de MODFATHER!!!
MrIan09d 2 years ago
The real Modfather is Steve Marriott.
No Marriott- No Weller- on several levels, the look, performance skills, song writing, attitude, and last but not least brilliant soulful vocals etc.

the last time i seen steve marriott he was singing this top song weller sings it ok but hes no steve marriott
golde07 4 years ago
One of his best performances. This was about 1993 i think. That's Carleen Anderson to Pauls right. Weller does a good Steve Marriot impression.
mojoelem 4 years ago
mojoelem: Weller always reminds me visually of Nicholas Lyndhurst. Great version...i was in the audience at the time.
