Joan represents the best of AMERICA. ...talented, beautiful and with great energy. This girl has been in music for decades.... and she gets better every day.
The best part is when she says.....''you are not nostalgic.'' When she sings that line, it comes from her soul.
@kja427 Yes, the song was all about Bob Dylan. Joan actually introduced Bob to the big circuit when he was a folk singer. He turned electric and became bigger than anyone for a while. Joan and Bob had a mad affair and it might have gone on, but Bob wasn't as 'liberal" as Joan was, so they drifted. The original song lyric was "..ten years ago..", but here it's "twenty years ago..".today..."forty years ago.." Joan also had a brief affair with one of the Beatles, but never said which one.
@ pigumpy, Nice to meet you hippy. Real talent like Mozart? Beethoven? Little Frankie Sinatra? Tchaickovsky? Elvis? Rob Halford? This is a great song, but please don't shuffle down your grey pony tail way thinking that the "60's were the sole fountain of decent music. Many people think that most of the '60's music was just wailing. I think it was just whining, but I like some of it. listen to Mettallica sometime.
I clicked onto this video fully expecting to be left thinking "Judas Priest's version is better," being a metal head and all, but honestly this is quite good.
I wonder if you can not like the one who wrote this about her past love, Bob Dylan? This is an original Joan Baez song and I have heard her sing it better.

Baez is still going strong. She still tours regularly, and her most recent album was 2008. Her voice isn't quite as strong, but she is young for her age (70). It may be in her genes, because when I saw her a couple years ago she talked about her mother, who was still living at that time. Her son was on drums.
i swear, if it were not 4 you tube i would have went 2 my grave thinking judas priest was the band that made this song!! at least they are the ones that introduced it 2 me! I wonder if joan her self liked their version of it
Most people use a pen and paper when they write. But Joan Baez wrote with her heart and out came this beautiful piece that has brought tears to the eyes of many. But we all contuinue to play it because the beauty within is greater than any pain we may feel.
Joan is one of a kind, a true diamond. She's one of the very few famous people whose death, whenever it may happen, will affect me deeply. It will be magical to finally get to see her.
@LiTenenit What a horrible comment to make about one of the most loved artists in the USA and the world of music !!!!! ??? You are thinking about her death !!! ????

@pontedupre007 (1) Excuse me, am I missing something?! My comment wasn't meant as an insult at all whatsoever. I have the deepest respect for Joan, she's the queen of music in my book and a wonderful human being whom I love and adore. Personally I think this is one of her many brilliant songs, and it just happened to make me think about when the day comes that the world won't have this unbelievable unbelievable singer/songwriter anymore.
@pontedupre007 (2) I did NOT mean that I wish for her to die, I would NEVER wish that (not about anyone but especially not her). We all know that no one lives forever but of course I hope she lives to be AT LEAST a hundred. Why I only meantioned how I would be affected by it wasn't out of egocentrism but because I can't speak for everyone, I can only speak for myself.
@pontedupre007 (3) It would be a lie to say that "the whole world would be affected" since there are people who unfortunately have/will miss out on hearing of this incredible lady. With that said, of course all of her fans will be saddened. Also, I don't appreciate you calling me out like that when you don't even know me.
@pontedupre007 (4) In all honesty I was worried when I sent the comment that someone would misinterpret it but I hoped that no one would. I'm sorry that you were hurt by my words and I apologize for that.
end of march I will be at her concert in Strasbourg, France. I live in Belgium and have to drive 600 kilometers but what the heck. It will be worth it.

Those of us who have been blessed to live through the 60's know and will never forget what real talent is. I miss those days when you actually had to have talent to make a mark. People of my generation didn't have to scream into the microphone like cave men to get noticed. I remember music, it used to sound just like this! Thank God for You Tube so we can have an archive.
@pjgumby Amen to that brother or sister. She was along with Ronstadt and others my favorite she inspired me to sing and learn guitar.... class talent educated in her field and if I am not wrong a clean background.... know what I mean!!
@pjgumby RE: "People of my generation didn't have to scream into the microphone like cave men". Joan has one of the most beautiful of voices I have heard. Very few come close to sounding so lovely. With that said, being one who was in my teens and 20's in the 80's, I was mostly into Heavy Metal. It was through Judas Priest, I learned of Joan Baez. If you listen to Priest's accustic version or Manegarms Urminnes Havd -forest sessions, you may understand cavemen do have talent,
@ccatdaddy64 Do I recall Jim Morrison, Jimi, Jimmy Page, and others screaming? Or my imagination? I understand these were not folk artists, who, for the most part didn't didn't scream into the mic, it wouldn't make sense. Nor would wearing life vest while rock climbing or wearing heavy boots for whitewater kayaking. BTW Halford does not scream when doing this acoustic, but does when they did it Metal style. Different situations call for different approach. But, your gen of artist did scream.
@tsaki2002 Judas Priest is what made me interested in Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have really cared about those two. I like both JP and Joan's version of this song. Do you think that just because it's rock that it has no feeling? Nothing could be further from the truth. And apparently you haven't heard JP's acoustic version of this song which has a lot of feeling in it.
Joan continues to have the admiration of an entire nation. Who else can write such beautiful lyrics and then sing the song herself beautifully and with a lot of feeling and soul? You guess it... Joan Baez !!
If people think Judas Priest are a patch on this, then OK, fine, they're completely delusional and probably unwell, but fine. Good on 'em for their loyalty. However, this is one of the defining musical voices of the last century - at its best. I don't particularly like Joan either - not very generous with encores and seems a bit detached from the people who are shelling out their wages to see and hear her, but she is undeniably blessed with a magical voice and it's always a thrill to hear her.
A great Artist like Joan deserves only our thanks for the beauty she brought to our lives. Whatever private struggles she has,and we all have the same ones, she is entitled to the same privacy that we would all expect . What she brings to the stage we consume and enjoy, that's what we pay for. Whatever else ought to be her business and none of ours. But I know the world is full of peeping toms, and its more entertaining to smear her private life. Get a life of your own to be concerned about!
@bs1174 What utter rubbish. Miss Baez wrote the song it's about a personal episode in her life. It's not possible for any other version to be better. Let alone a bunch of degenerates. Well that's what they look like on the video. I expect you will disagree.
@ludvan64 MISS Baez??? LOL Go back and worship at the Baez shrine you have set up in the corner of your bedroom. Maybe when you pay for it, a real girl may even talk to you some day.
@bs1174 It's called respect. When you reach my age nearly the same as Miss Baez it's what people give you. I've been married to a real woman for 38 years. Two Children, and two grandchildren.
@ludvan64 oops my mistake. apologies. still, sounds like you have her on a pedestal. to each his own. enjoy your grandkids. I wonder if they listen to Judas Priest... lol
@bs1174 Apology excepted. I just love Joan Baez both as a singer, and as a person who aspires to an Ideal I respect, but can't achieve. IE non violence.
My grandkids are 9&7 respectively. And if you would have bothered to check my profile something I do to all who contact me. that I'm not old enough to have grandchildren of an age that could listen to either Joan Baez or Judas Priest, nor would they understand the language.
I am transported back to 30 years ago, I was 18...I had one cassette tape of Joan's as a student nurse in England..I wore it out, but still have it as a valued momento of my youth.....we shall never again see this type of music, beauty and such magical escape
I saw her last month, and she changed the last line. "If you're offering me diamonds and rust/ I'll take the diamonds." I had never heard the song before, but that line really struck me as a good ending. It is interesting to find out that it was not the original. As another commenter notes, she is improving with time.
Here's why I don't like Joan. For years in the 60's she crusaded to have her husband released from prison and when they set him free she immediately divorced him. The songs not bad though.
@Deadcat069 It's kinda ridiculous for you to judge someone for circumstances you don't even know much about. Did you know Joan and her husband? Were you there for their conversations? No, so it's unreasonable to judge her based on that she divorced him when he got out of prison. To say that you don't like someone you hardly know is being silly.
Kids don't know the history of this song, some don't care. Joan is singing about her ex-boyfriend Bob Dylan. All the references in the song fit. I can't imagine how anyone else, such as J. Priest, could do this personal of a song and have it make any sense, but Joan gets paid regardless as the songwriter. I wonder what she thought of the cover.
@Cyanarchy : Priest did it as a song .. John Baez is telling a story through this song. This is just a walk through the dead roads of Nostalgia .. Love John Baez ....
@ultramegabob2 There is this talent nowadays, but they're not big stars anymore. I saw a 20 year old in a Cologne club playing a hell of song but -what a miracle- I haven't spied him on MTV yet. If nobody cares for the talents, how could they be famous?
@NeonlightRebel These days people get famous just because they have the look that the recording companies are looking for, or they constantly pull publicity stunts.
@ultramegabob2 I am with you on your commment... GA Ga is neither a musician, nor a singer.. she is in my book strictly an entertainer..... she makes me laugh (lol) sooo guess I can say she is an entertainer... there is a difference in the termonology!!! agree? Joanie inspired me to play guitar after someone that heard me sing bought me a guitar and said "here learn how to play it" and I did....
the incomparable joan baez...I have seen her twice live, once up close in a small club. As pure a voice as we're likely to hear, and a brave, shining heart to drive it...
These are lyrics for the ages. A thousand years from now people will find these lyrics as beautifull and meaningfull. That is the mark that Joan will leave in history..... she will be as famous as Shakesperare and Cervantes.
sorry about multiple posts... couldnt figure out how it worked!!!. Still my favourite apart from the sound track to the film `Silent Running` which was sublime.
to me the original is always better, but I realize too that you guys are so much younger than me, so you never had a chance to hear the original first. Your first imprint of this song will be your favorite, that's just the way it is. I once found 'Rocken Robin' in sheet music from the 1920's and so many Artists recorded that song. Now some music is being redone from the Supremes and it's not bad, at least they're true to the melody, but remember someone did it first and did it very well.
WOW !!! This is one the most beautiful lyrics of all times by an american composer !!! Thanks Joan for giving us this beautiful and meaningful song !!!!.
This is my first time hearing the original song. I admit I did not think Joan Baez version could even come close to the awesome, powerful versions recorded by Judas Priest. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying a duet is long over due. I still feel that JP's version is better, but that's just me. After playing the original a few times and really hearing her voice I feel the way JP preforms it is how she truly envisioned it. Wish I could ask Joan that question someday.
Superb song! I was lucky enough to see her in concert back in 1992, when she played the Dominion Theatre in London. It was the best concert I've ever been to; I feel so priviliged to have seen one of my favourite singers live at least once in my life!
Ms Baez is a very excellent songwriter and I love her version of this song, but I have to give the version by Judas Priest as stronger in feeling and emotion.
joan, bravissima per la voce penetrante, per la musica dolcissima, per la recitazione dei testi e per il significato di tutto questo cioè la pace nel mondo e potere sperare in un mondo diverso.
Once a person establishes herself as a star, she continues to be a star. JOAN has been a star for decades and continues to shine every time we listen to her music.
Ms Baez, I don't know if you monitor this page, but you have to know , we all love you, not just for your talent , but your messages as well. Be safe, warm, and loved .I will always wish all these things for you.
I can't help but to hear this over and over again, Her talent is so intoxicating. Her voice, her looks, her guitar , everything......she is so awesome!!!!
I'm sorry but I really prefer Priest's cover of this. Rob Halford puts much more expression into his singing and I need not to talk about the guitar play.
what a great talent! Some people got it all. She is so awesome , I have always loved her, and aliciajitinse said it best, she did improve with time, like fine wine. You go girl!!!
Did you know Judas Priest (!) do a rather excellent cover of this? Look for a recent live version, their earlier attempts are a bit too heavy for my liking.
And Joan, if you're reading this: Ever thought of repaying the compliment? Doing one of Priest's, Hell Bent for Leather maybe or Breaking the Law? Go on, bit of a laugh.
I liked JP's version off of Unleashed in the East (1975). As far of the more current version you speak of, the video shot live at the Budokan in 2005 is probably one of the best versions I've heard them do. Especially the beginning where Glen and KK are playing acoustic guitars.

@bs1174 What utter rubbish. Miss Baez wrote the song it's about a personal episode in her life. It's not possible for any other version to be better. Let alone a bunch of degenerates. Well that's what they look like on the video. I expect you will disagree.
ludvan64 1 year ago
@ludvan64 MISS Baez??? LOL Go back and worship at the Baez shrine you have set up in the corner of your bedroom. Maybe when you pay for it, a real girl may even talk to you some day.
bs1174 1 year ago
@bs1174 It's called respect. When you reach my age nearly the same as Miss Baez it's what people give you. I've been married to a real woman for 38 years. Two Children, and two grandchildren.
ludvan64 1 year ago
@ludvan64 oops my mistake. apologies. still, sounds like you have her on a pedestal. to each his own. enjoy your grandkids. I wonder if they listen to Judas Priest... lol
bs1174 1 year ago
@bs1174 Apology excepted. I just love Joan Baez both as a singer, and as a person who aspires to an Ideal I respect, but can't achieve. IE non violence.
My grandkids are 9&7 respectively. And if you would have bothered to check my profile something I do to all who contact me. that I'm not old enough to have grandchildren of an age that could listen to either Joan Baez or Judas Priest, nor would they understand the language.
ludvan64 1 year ago
@ludvan64 You could have left it at 'apology accepted'. I retract my apology after seeing your profile. You're a Socialist and probably a hippy.

@bs1174 You made me laugh. A soon to be 67 year old hippy. My wife will love that.

I am transported back to 30 years ago, I was 18...I had one cassette tape of Joan's as a student nurse in England..I wore it out, but still have it as a valued momento of my youth.....we shall never again see this type of music, beauty and such magical escape
velvet2001861 1 year ago
I saw her last month, and she changed the last line. "If you're offering me diamonds and rust/ I'll take the diamonds." I had never heard the song before, but that line really struck me as a good ending. It is interesting to find out that it was not the original. As another commenter notes, she is improving with time.

Here's why I don't like Joan. For years in the 60's she crusaded to have her husband released from prison and when they set him free she immediately divorced him. The songs not bad though.
Deadcat069 1 year ago
@Deadcat069 personally I like the rockin Judas Priest cover better
phantasmphan 1 year ago

Where is the talent like this these days? It makes me sic, that people think that Lady Ga Ga is a musician.
ultramegabob2 1 year ago 30
@ultramegabob2 Lady Ga Ga isn't a musican, she is an entertainment
performer!
fntime 1 year ago
@ultramegabob2 There is this talent nowadays, but they're not big stars anymore. I saw a 20 year old in a Cologne club playing a hell of song but -what a miracle- I haven't spied him on MTV yet. If nobody cares for the talents, how could they be famous?
NeonlightRebel 1 year ago
@NeonlightRebel These days people get famous just because they have the look that the recording companies are looking for, or they constantly pull publicity stunts.
ultramegabob2 1 year ago
@ultramegabob2 I am with you on your commment... GA Ga is neither a musician, nor a singer.. she is in my book strictly an entertainer..... she makes me laugh (lol) sooo guess I can say she is an entertainer... there is a difference in the termonology!!! agree? Joanie inspired me to play guitar after someone that heard me sing bought me a guitar and said "here learn how to play it" and I did....

sorry about multiple posts... couldnt figure out how it worked!!!. Still my favourite apart from the sound track to the film `Silent Running` which was sublime.
goachgray 1 year ago
to me the original is always better, but I realize too that you guys are so much younger than me, so you never had a chance to hear the original first. Your first imprint of this song will be your favorite, that's just the way it is. I once found 'Rocken Robin' in sheet music from the 1920's and so many Artists recorded that song. Now some music is being redone from the Supremes and it's not bad, at least they're true to the melody, but remember someone did it first and did it very well.
pjgumby 1 year ago
WOW !!! This is one the most beautiful lyrics of all times by an american composer !!! Thanks Joan for giving us this beautiful and meaningful song !!!!.
pontedupre007 1 year ago
This is my first time hearing the original song. I admit I did not think Joan Baez version could even come close to the awesome, powerful versions recorded by Judas Priest. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying a duet is long over due. I still feel that JP's version is better, but that's just me. After playing the original a few times and really hearing her voice I feel the way JP preforms it is how she truly envisioned it. Wish I could ask Joan that question someday.
