Couldn't you see that Robert Stack was losing his fuckin' nerve and The Duke had to bitch-slap some sense into that noggin of his?!Hey,that's what you do to someone who's about to have a breakdown, right or wrong?
"airplane" & alot of movies copied from this - but stop and think this was like "stagecoach" - both great john wayne movies - people say he can't act - "not hardly"
@michaelmuller That's why AIRPLANE was so funny. It was created by making a new movie out of hundreds of scenes like this for from dozens of old aviation films. Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker loved the classics and wrote a movie around all of the old cleche's from other films. What might seem dramatic in one film becomes comical when combined with similar dramatic moments from other films.
My Dad was a line pilot and spent a few years in a DC 4; from WW2 into the 50's. When this movie came out he asked the Capt if he had seen the movie yet and he said he had. When asked what he thought the answer was "I didn't like it when the Capt. was slapped". Just a remembers of one of Dads many stories.
Funny? A pilot whose scared s__tless? Why is that funny? I thought this was one of the most dramatic scenes ever filmed, and one of John Wayne's hero type moments.
Great stuff. Anybody have scenes fom''The Crowded Sky'' the mid-air collision movie
based on Frank Srearle's book of the same name. Made in 1960, it starred Dana Andrews, Efrem Zimbalist Jnr, and Anne Francis as a sharp-witted, sexy flight attendant. Try watching her post-collision passenger briefing without creasing up!
Funny moment? I just watched this movie on TMC. This is how john Wayne displays his manhood in every movie he has ever made. A true American icon of masculine bravado. Slap, hit and punch! It's what he does to make his point - this is not funny, it's true American movie making!

What's so funny? I was a professional for forty years and had to slap the shit out of a few captains in the cockpit!
Just kidding about the slapping part although I sure would have liked to a couple of times.
But the slapping scene did have good dramatic affect. And hey! It's the Duke for God'sake.

@logancody07 I didn't think it was funny either!

The Duke put himself on the line as this was his own production. Great theme music. Great, riveting movie, despite your assinine observation.
