I think it’s all about sound. Period instruments would be ideal at a small gathering but at these large occasions with noisy audiences and modern background noise it is more important that the music can be heard. Perhaps in the future the Jane Austen Dancers will hold a small dancers dance and use “authentic” instruments.

To Parkerhars: To each his own, but I don't think the the goal of this event was to showcase period instruments. I think they sounded great and very few of those dancers were likely to notice or care whether the cello had an endpin or not! I'm a violinist myself, I love Playford and early dance music, but as a practical matter I would be very reluctant to sacrifice my chinrest!

Sorry, but this sets my teeth on edge.. the electric piano is bad enough, but a Boehm system flute (introduced 1847), a cello with an endpin (1860s) and a violin with a chinrest? None of this is apprpriate for regency music!

Looks like it has been a great party! I just love Jane Austen dances and dresses. They are so... magnificent!
