i firmly believe everybody has a right to have and state their opinion on something be it rock music pornography or even racist attitudes. but one does not have the right to impose their opinion whatever it may be on anyone else
The simplest way around the issue and to avoid censorship is for record shops to have some albums with an 18 sticker on it, just as DVDs have and some video games. If a minor wishes to have such an album he/she can always ask someone of age to go into the shop and get it. Otherwise being over 18 a person has the right to listen to whatever he/she likes. Where would the harm be in that? We can listen to Dynamo Hum at leisure then-:)
Rather than become a "censored" society we have become more of an 'anything goes' society...and the more hateful, negative, ugly, confrontational, falsely accusing, and even combative and violent the better. We're getting there: The crime rate is decreasing, people are becoming free and open thinkers (more biased, actually), kids are safe, and we all feel comfortable walking down our streets alone at night. Ah! Utopia is bliss. :o)
Even Einstein questioned the rapidity of humanity's technological growth (which should include mass media technology and the deluge & easy accessibility of contradictory and/or questionable info from even the most extreme viewpoints all around the globe) compared to it's ability to handle it. Einstein thought technology was moving forward/increasing too fast for people to handle in HIS day. What about today?
Kids tend to imitate what they see and hear. The older and hopefully more mature they become, the less likely they are to be influenced by music and visuals in a negative or literal way, or "misinterpret" a make-believe scenario put forth by an artist or composer. Don't underestimate the POWER of music as a catalyst to push ideas (with or without words with video) even if misinterpreted by the listener or viewer.
I definitely have differences with Zap on SOME of his views, not all. In this economy and mass media/entertainment deluge how are how are parents going to keep tabs on everything their kids listen to so they can explain it to them or help them understand it? Kids' accessibility to certain potentially harmful influences (ideological influences, not so much the musical) should sometimes be delayed until they can process it without being swayed by it.
Ya know she was right about one thing. When I was a kid I couldn't buy Penthouse and I couldn't get in to an R rated movie but I damn sure could pick up a guitar at 15 and learn how to play the same music she was condemning and 30 years later I'm a DAMN good guitar player and if it wasn't for the rock music of the time I know I wouldn't be the awesome guitarist I am today.
I wonder how many children's minds Kandy bent by reciting these lyrics. I also wonder how many adults she stimulated with that matter-of-fact delivery. Maybe it was just me.
When he was on the Joan Rivers show he said that Candy actually had her own kids in the audience at this debate whilst she was reciting all the so called evil sexual material. He also said she wanted to have her picture taken with him and the kids afterwards.
The shit they put in cds has nothing to do with religion and sex, it has to do with morality and responsibility whether you're religious or not.
And yes she is right, kids don't know what the fuck commitment is, because they're too young to take on any responsibility, and if they were 18 (Or of age) it would be a whole different story.
And Masturbation is stupid, come on seriously, it's a waste of time...
Even if that was true (which it isn't) watching YT videos is also a waste of time for the most part and so is your comment.
Nobody is stealing your right to educate your children and to make them ethical and responsible. If your children become irresponsible jerk-offs, that's YOUR FAULT, blaming it on music is a complete disgrace. You need to stop being a coward and face your own responsibility, if you can't raise your children no law or rating system can help you.
With this things, it always happens like this: the more your censor, the more attractive it gets. I don't know how people like this woman don't see that.
@ertansaygi Such people who scream bloody murder when it comes to anything of sexual nature are usually the ones who exhibit the most perversive sexual behaviour in private that would make even the Marquie De Sade blush and the Devil go ''Duuuude, thats sick!''.
I find Candy Stroud to be very ignorant throwing terms around like the occult, she probably thinks Astrology, Numerology and psychic phenonama are evil and connected to the devil in her twisted little christian mind.
I think Candy Stroud's opinion is "how dare you as an artist disagree with me and be so articulate about it and come out with better serious points than me." This is a paraphrased quote here, but I have seen this type of discussion so many times over the years. Coming from the UK, I can think of the Life of Brian controversy in 1979/80 and a very famous debate between Malcolm Muggeridge and The Bishop of Southwark with Michael Palin and John Cleese, where the Pythons made them look ridiculous.
they should rate commercials if they are so concerned, commercials have for a long time used sex to sell products and have zero social merit. Cigarettes will actually kill you, music doesn't make you into a rapist, sexual repression probably plays a part.
It amazes me how Frank and Candy are on different levels of this topic. Frank clearly explained that if children have an idea from their parents about sex, the BIOLOGICAL, PHYSICAL function, they can filter information about sex the music industry tries to shove down their throats. Candy sat there and repeatedly said that sex is bad, we should censor it.
This debate is very old, but there are maybe similar debates going on in USA, I don't know. But the thing is that if parents give their children more time and teach them about sex and stuff the children will know how to behave and treat others. If the children receive this knowledge from their parents no 'bad' lyrics will effect them to become monsters or molesters. Labeling records as containing 'sex', 'violence' or anything else will only help curious children to find these records easier.
Stroud has said nothing about "God" or any sort of religious, conservative leaning DESPITE her viewpoints. Yet, Zappa keeps refering to her, essentially, as being a Bible-toting whiner. He's not debating Stroud in these clips, he's just spouting off against the government and the more political sense of the social environment at that time. Stroud, on the other hand, forgets that labels on cigarettes, age requirements on alcohol deal with physical damage, not mental. ..which is harder to prove.
@TyphoidBryan Stroud's organization, the PMRC, don't state directly they want to enforce christian values because it would destroy their campaign, but its easy to see when you view their material. There many organizations similar to PMRC, like the Discovery Institute, Alliance for Marriage, Home School Foundation, American Vision, Family Research Council, etc, that use coded language like "preserving family values" and "righting our moral compass" to veil their christian worldview.
look, if you want to censor material in your own home then thats your right, but when you want to keep it from others then we would be degressing as a society. Remember McCarthy? Don't tell me what to do. Don't tell me whats bad for my children. take care of your own and stop thinking that we can't handle it. Who the fuck are you to tell me what to do or what not to injest in my life. Live and let Live.
Frank Zappa = A genius, The debate was about music censorship, and Zappa defended his rights as an artist to express his opinions. Every phone call made for an interview about the issue, Zappa would accept the opportunity. It goes without saying that he was a very intelligent and articulate man, yet his efforts seemed wasted as he was attempting to fight the government (indirectly I suppose) once he got is opinion across through the media, they didnt stand a chance BTW Candy looks like a man.
Labeling records has actually made it EASIER to put out edgier material, which I'm sure puts a bug directly up Stroud's crotch, and was almost certainly the opposite of what she desired. So, ironically, the issue these two were on opposite sides over actually led to DECREASED censorship. Zappa's concerns were understandable, but he actually should have been the one in favor of labels.
@drugsnbeer Ultimately, though, I don't think Stroud or the PMRC or any of these people are really all that sincere about the whole censorship thing. Frank's right...it's all a publicity stunt. Generic, insignificant people with nothing important or new to do or say in the world take it upon themselves to try to change or end something simply so they can have their five minutes in the spotlight. These people want to feel like they've accomplished something with their lives, regardless of others.
@NWG92 That's probably true. I'm just trying to focus on the arguments and the reality of how this all played out. The motivations of the participants are interesting, but not what I ultimately care about.
@NWG92 You are right about that..nobody ever heard of this congressman from Tennessee..later to become VP with Bill Clinton..named Al Gore, Tippers husband :)
Zappa is completely right of course in his general sentiments about lyrical content and uptight, puritanical worries about what "bad" lyrics will do to children. But nothing that Stroud desired as pertaining to self-regulation is abjectly unreasonable. It's reasonable for parents to be able to have SOME idea of what's on the album before purchase. If this stuff begins with the parents, well, that's how parents do it - by knowing what their kids have. cont.

@7Eight9Ten I see what your saying and I respect it. I wonder though if it's almost necessary to discuss that aspect of it because it's at the core of trying to legislate morality.
i hate her... as much as i hate fat john lofton... zappa should have choked her like rp mcmurphy did to nurse ratched in 'one flew over the cuckoo's nest'
how conservative charlie rose was then compared to now. he didnt want zappa to say much cause he wanted to make the controversy last as long as the newscast could carry it. iff this was on his pbs show he would give frank a lot more airtime to say what he wanted. anyway, frank made a fool out of this woman.
Another result of the "moral majority" victory is that we no longer have popular TV shows like this one. On the one extreme we have people talking about nothing at all (passing fashions and whatnot), and on the other shows like Jerry Springer where they don't really talk at all, but scream and grunt at each other. The conservative's platonic ideal has been made real in "pure-minded" infomercials vs. mindless shouting matches.
Here are lyrics we should obey: "Come together right now...over me".
Charlie Rose is an ass.His job was to moderate,NOT to debate Frank. My question to all these people who are so concerned about sex; I wonder if they're as concerned about all the VIOLENCE in our video games and movies, something that kids watch and play EVERYDAY!To understand the lopsideness of this, imagine that these games and movies had that much sexual acivity---Can you imagie the uproar from all the "Churchies" out there? Violence is ok for them, butr sex isnt. I'll bet Jesus would disagree.
If you think Charlie Rose is an asshole, go check out John Lofton and Frank go at it on a CNN Crossfire bit from a year later. Charlie's a pussycat ;)
she lost guys she didn't make any good points she just kept repeating band names and lyrics!! so many dumb people and bad parents. the shitty parents just want something to blame so they feel better about raising stupid sorry ass punk kids. and the dumb people will eat any shit they are fed. Candy Stroud = Fail
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No, she won the debate. She stuck to her arguments and Frank got fed up from some point onwards and refused to address her points seriously. To neutral and undecided observers she came off as being correct. Nothing to do with the actual validity of her arguments.
(It was something like you just did, calling her names.)
P.S. If you want to hear Frank Zappa speak on the same topic(s) that are covered here, check out the Bill Roller interview (you can find it here on YouTube). He's in terrific form on that show, and lays out every argument beautifully.
Frank wasn't shown at his absolute argumentative best here. His responses and rebuttals sometimes steered a little off-course. "I like masturbation...!" 'Nothing to do with the question that was just asked. I think he was just... angry, and blowing his top a little. He was doing a circuit of TV shows at the time-all surrounding this topic-and meeting and debating with people just like Candy Stroud. Probably felt like he'd had more than a belly full by this time.
First of all, you can tell Zappa was SERIOUSLY PISSED...I mean, they kept interrupting him when he had something to say...what the hell? I would get pissed too.
Second, WHY THE HELL DOES CANDY KEEP COMING BACK TO PRINCE??? Morris Day, Darling Nikki, Sheena Easton...
Prince is a genius!!! Leave him alone!!! Go attack someone else!!!! :\
I really love it how we can send troops into battle for pointless objectives without furor but words on a "heavy metal" album can raise a national uproar.
Albums that, in hindsight, look pretty damn tame to anything out today - and there STILL is no justification from hiding information from our kids.
As a parent, I'm going to make sure I arm my children with brains able to process information without fear.
If I were a kid watching this in 1985, I would have gotten an ear load of free lyrics and info from Candy. She probably screwed some kids head up more than if that kid had bought those records and innocently listened to them.
I'm disappointed in Charlie Rose he was really bias and in my opinion disrespectful. Zappa did not have fair chance to speak his mind where as Kandy Strout which actually sounds like a Porn Star's name (not to insult Porn Stars) just made me realize how much Porno Rock I missed and need to catch up on...she is very well informed! She must listen to a lot of good music! Ah, and finally Congress has not changed much or perhaps I should say it's deteriorated since this debate.
i dont think charlie was disrespectful at all. he made a valid contribution at 0:46 by saying wouldnt frank defend kandy's right to speak about whatever she believes in. i believe in the motto i may not agree with what you say but i will defend your right to say it.. Frank's position is more logical to me and im sure frank is not attacking people like kandy. he just wants to make sure a voice of logic gets heard in the issue. ya?
Frank just knows how it is and how it should be. The fucking lazy ass parents should just teach kids about sex and shit. I was taught about sex when i was very young and I in turn have gotten no girls pregnant and have not gotten any diseases and i have been listen to hard rock and gang rape rap since before i was born.
i swear, the host wouldn't shut the fuck up. was frank debating against her or both of them. definitely think the crowd was on his side though, as unfair as the whole thing was. i mean shit, the host just kept interrupting everything he said
Censorship, like being 18 to buy pornographic material, or being 21 to buy or consume alcohol, to me, seems necessary. A warning label on rock albums, at least to warn parents as to what their kids are listening to, is to me, not entirely out of line. But the problem exists: WHO will make that judgement? If the parents don't, who will? The Government? The Church? This is a purely moralistic question, Answered, only by the individual. Hey, welcome to the planet Earth. School is in session...
I'm with Frank Zappa on the censorship issue, and I enjoy his music, but boy, if he could read some of these vulgar and self-righteous comments about miss Stroud. You can disagree with someone without resorting to juvenile personal attacks. Show some class.
And he was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. Who do you trust more: a blonde, dumb, conservative bitch or a real genious who knows how to parent his children the right way ?
I know! It's a shame conservatives forgot the difference between "conservative" and "moralist". It's amazing how "moralism" has shifted from the liberals to the conservatives...I think the demise of the Republican party can be traced to it's embrace of some moral high ground.
I heard GO EAT SHIT on one song and Fuck Yourself on another and the song I am listening to now is suggesting I kill myself.... Goodbye, cruel world... if only we had more nannies!
Frank has been much more eloquent on this subject, but, as usual, he is the one voice of reason in the room.
We have had 25 years of consumer labels and sex is still everywhere in music (if not even racier) and kids still gravitate toward it. Especially the repressed kids whose parents believe in abstinence-only education.
The shift we need in American thought is this notion that a parent has the right to limit their kids' education - as though ignorance will protect them.
Ah, that'll be the day, when everybody thinks for themselves and everybody has their own culture, philosophy, physical appearance, aesthetics, common sense, and everything else! And everybody wouldn't need a group to do their thing, they would just need their self! Ahh, yes, that'll be the day...
I just heard the words "Go Eat Shit" in a song, i must eat a shit now, the next log i plop out is gettin eaten........oh my me, its like some unseen magical force has taken over my body and brain and i cant think straight anymore, pls save me candy
im a grownup, i can think for myself. dont trust any person/organization/government/group that tries to change your way of thinking, you can think anything you like, make your own mind up....your thoughts are your own.
Well, call me a paranoiac, but I think the day will come (not in my lifetime) when there will be weapons that will eliminate you cleanly with no mushroom cloud without damaging property simply for having inappropriate thoughts. That is if we don't destroy ourselves before then. You may think I'm joking but I'm not. I'm not.
Of course you couldn't expect anyone who would search this video out to be on Kandy's side. (Sorry for the misspelling of her name in the previous post). I do share some of her concerns but don't know what to do about it vis a vis freedom of speech. Some of the lyrics that Kandy was quoting were pretty disturbing, and (although I haven't heard the pieces) didn't seem to be delivered in a humorous way. There seemed to be no "social commentary" element.
Frank said it during the debate, these songs and most of the "pornographic" stuff that is still being put out for the masses today is purely 'product'
Boy, lots of food for thought in this show. I don't know for sure, but I would venture to guess that Frank's kids are more well adjusted than Candy's. I guess it all comes down to parental guidance. I listened to Alice Cooper singing about necrophilia, but I never went out and did it. And of course it is ridiculous to think that he did it either.
The difference today is that some of this violent stuff you hear people singing about, they actually do it and glorify it.
Hang on now, that's Charlie Rose - he's on Zappa's side, but he's just playing devil's advocate. Rose is an old-school liberal.
I do think that he didn't challenge Stroud's opinions, but that's not because he agrees with her. He's just being a gentleman. Not that she deserves it or anything...
Happy to oblige, heh heh. Me and all those other old school liberals like Rose, Bill Moyers, Ted Kennedy, Daniel Shore, Ed Asner, Jimmy Carter, we'll all keep trying to make your point stronger by testing it politely instead of getting into shouting matches or cheerleading.
The problem with the government is: they treat you like you're stupid and a perform lot of underhanded practices right under your nose.
They calmly bully you into thinking that they know best. They do such things without your input . They are screwing with your rights from the food your eat right down to the music you hear on the radio. Frank Zappa was considered a danger because he brought wrong doings like this into the light where they should be rightly discussed, not just put into law.
It's not about the lyrics. It's about control and keeping you docile and ignorant on the issues that really matter. The people in charge or who want to be in charge, don't have your best interests in mind.
going that far wouldn't be required to be honest, she should simply masturbate and find out it's not that bad and it certainly isn't going to the end of her, let alone condemn her to hell.
this whole issue is so childish and idiotic. People need to grow up, and as frank said, EDUCATE their children instead of depriving them. Sexuality is an amazing human trait and should not be a made hidden or mysterious to young minds. That only creates confusion and ignorance.
If there was consumer labels..the kids would still buy the stuff, they bought it cause they liked it, enjoyed the escape, the excitement of a realm so liberating - not because they had no idea what they were buying initially.
I understand what you're saying & agree, but I think 'patriot', which seems to be used an awful lot nowadays, is the wrong word, for a patriot is he who thinks "My country, right or wrong" & it's an obsolete & narrow-minded idea, especially today when everything in the world is interconnected. Besides Zappa criticized reactionary ideas wherever he found them, & if he talks about the US it's simply because he lived there. As Samuel Johnson said: "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel"
kandy stroud was a smug and well rehearsed shit who's main fucking push was to covertly plug her own career.
Frank was definitely amongst enemies in this forum, a bunch of suckiups who actually thought that congress was gonna put all consumable media into a police state, and the only reason for their suck-up behavior was to save their own ass--- one thing that no-one seems to acknowledge: media has long been the tool of political special interests.
this debate is as olde as the hills and it's our loss we are still going on with it. frank was a stallwart defender of common sense and basic human knowledge. Those who paint with lies and lies X 10 tot he googleplex, are sinners and we will suffer and so will they. Go for Joy jesus pagan freedom is the way nowadays
Kandy Stroud just rehashed the same ole' shit. Frank at least came up with different talking points to different questions. All Kandy did was recite the very lyrics she didn't want kids to hear. Did she not realize that there were children in the audience? She defeated her own crusade.
frank was always right. my parents let me figure that out on my own. my dad loves frank 2 this day and i was raised listening 2 frank and the mothers and everything else that he did. i guess i must b morally depraved somehow! but the truth is that i work a good job after graduating from university and i live a great life of my choice and im sexually active when and with whom i choose and the woman that mr zappa debated seems like an alien from another world 2 me

look, if you want to censor material in your own home then thats your right, but when you want to keep it from others then we would be degressing as a society.

Zappa's concerns were understandable, but he actually should have been the one in favor of labels.
drugsnbeer 1 year ago

If this stuff begins with the parents, well, that's how parents do it - by knowing what their kids have. cont.

No, she won the debate. She stuck to her arguments and Frank got fed up from some point onwards and refused to address her points seriously. To neutral and undecided observers she came off as being correct. Nothing to do with the actual validity of her arguments.

Frank wasn't shown at his absolute argumentative best here. His responses and rebuttals sometimes steered a little off-course. "I like masturbation...!" I really love it how we can send troops into battle for pointless objectives without furor but words on a "heavy metal" album can raise a national uproar.
Albums that, in hindsight, look pretty damn tame to anything out today - and there STILL is no justification from hiding information from our kids.
As a parent, I'm going to make sure I arm my children with brains able to process information without fear.

I'm disappointed in Charlie Rose he was really bias and in my opinion disrespectful. i dont think charlie was disrespectful at all. he made a valid contribution at 0:46 by saying wouldnt frank defend kandy's right to speak about whatever she believes in. i believe in the motto i may not agree with what you say but i will defend your right to say it..

PerpetualxBurn 2 years ago
Boy, lots of food for thought in this show. I don't know for sure, but I would venture to guess that Frank's kids are more well adjusted than Candy's. I guess it all comes down to parental guidance. I listened to Alice Cooper singing about necrophilia, but I never went out and did it. And of course it is ridiculous to think that he did it either.
The difference today is that some of this violent stuff you hear people singing about, they actually do it and glorify it.
