If economies really start to collapse, do we really supposed people are going to be going for vacation at some of the most expensive places they can find? I don't know much of other countries in that term, but atleast in my country (Germany) it is something very uncommon - probably because of the analogy to nazis. Or just plain rejection of rotten systems by newer generations.
And in my opinon nation pride for being "rich/powerful" is something very ignorant, when many people are suffering in just that country.

One of the major reasons why countries like Dubai are building these things is BECAUSE they know oil is a finite ressource. Tourism is Dubai's backup plan, the second main pillar of their economy, their fallback position.

@Schensue With all due respect, I disagree. You are thinking of Dubai's economy, but the economies all over the world are suffering. If economies really start to collapse, do we really supposed people are going to be going for vacation at some of the most expensive places they can find? Doubtfully....while I give big props to the UAE for trying to think ahead, I think in some ways they really are going a bit overboard, this is more of a status symbol to stay here than anything else.

But as we have seen and as it has always been the richest people in the world are not effected by a suffering economy. The super rich will remain super rich and can afford vacations like this. I would claim is it most wise of Dubai to aim their tourism at those people and not at the average tourist.

The deciding factor on how much of waste of money something is, is whether or not it meets the goals of the people who payed for it. If this air conditioned beach makes a profit for the hotel, then it obviously wasn't a waste. Who knows, maybe these luxuries will finally help all that wealth "trickle down"...
