  • CTFU!!! DATES DONT LIE!!! HE IS AWESOME! BUT STILL SHOT OUT TO DAVE COOK FOR ACKNOWLEDGING CHRIS CORNELL VERSION. BUT THE REAL DEAL HOLLIFIELD IS MICHEAL JACKSON. IF IT WASNT FOR HIM, NOBODY WOULD HAVE A SPECIAL VERSION OF THIS SONG!!!! ~BOOM~

  • FUCK DAVID COOK

  • Funny how a white dude can add so much soul to a black(originally) guy's song.

  • he is just too sexy for words that voice never fails in making me cream my panties!

  • beautiful

  • R.I.P Michael... You ARE The Best Singer.

"She said I am the one..." that's true...

  • WHAT THE

who is this guy never hear of him, but he's voice is so so so amazing O_O

    very nice !!

  • lol... It's Chris Cornell, Audioslave... deemed one of the best rock vocals ever... his range is amazing, and he's a baritone

  • Yea he's got one of the greaest voce of rock n roll

  • cause you arent a rock fanatic..

this guy is chris, one of the most important singers in rock (grunge,stoner..) ever..

  • Are you kidding, I love rock, but an different kind of rock, Jrock

  • im a fanatic since 1996..when I started to listen rock, metal , hardcore and more genres..

Did you know Soundgarden ( the original band of this man) Deftones, Bad brains, Faith no more, Kyuss , Nirvana?¿?...

    Bands of my age..

  • I told you, I usually listen Japanese Rock, like nightmare, dix

  • oks..

    download soundgarden...

  • wow, what a powerful voice, thanks I really like the band :)

  • :)

Black hole sun is my favourite song of Soundgarden..

  • Michael Jackson, he's the one

  • R.I.P. Michael

    Great Cover....

  • great cover!! i love it!

  • Oh you know, except for the part where Chris Cornell did it first? This vid is two years old, it's on his old album "Carry On".

  • David Cook even said he was covering Chris Cornell's cover of Billie Jean.

  • If you like the blues, this is really a good song to listen to with this arrangement.

  • I don't think people realize the skill behind vocal belting.

It can literally destroy your vocal cords.

  • I would like to know Michaels feelings of such a great cover

  • He was absolutely great on this one. Even better than the album.

  • a great bluesy and powerful version of the song.

  • Enjoy his voice. The best there have ever been on this whole planet. Don't compare it to original, that's just stupid, when it's not the melody Chris wants to put in focus, but just to show how pro his voice is. <3

  • he's so hot:((

  • not bad not bad at all

  • I like mark terenzi better

  • Prety good but still like Michael J's beta coz of da beat

  • that woz mum mum lol

  • i meant MY mom

  • sucked ass

  • "King of Pop" The Best SINGER and DANCER From "BILLIE JEAN"

  • man it seems effortless for him. What a gift!

  • come on dude... he nails it live man.. i have been to his concert... his vocals are just out of this world.. he does hit notes !

  • He is my favorite vocalist. ...ever

  • same here

    He i just amazing

  • This kid needs to lay down the crack pipe, but not too far away because hes entertaining as hell.

  • wtf.. he kicks ass live man .. listen to the acoustic live version of this song of his concert in Sweden... that will blow ur balls away !!

  • Actually, The Sweden version he doens't sing as well as this one. This is the better version. Not only does he sing with less rasp but he hits the notes. He's honestly not that great live, and in the Sweden one he can't hit the notes.

  • Concert arenas don't do his voice justice.. Studio is sooo much better for him..

  • It depends on which venue he is at. Some places have much better acoustics than other places. Like the Greek in LA, the best. Anyway, like it!!

  • Best Cover Ever!!!

  • If you need any reason to doubt, or just would like to compare his range and talent, listen to Outshined and then Blow up the Outside World and then you will get it.

Futhermore, Layne S. was very gifted as well (but his demons would not let him be) and is still missed today.

  • As someone who has grown up with Chris Cornell (since the age of 13 around 1987..me, not him), I can honestly say, he is a force. He remains the most consistent songwriter and vocalist. His vocal range can be attained by very few men and it indeed takes talent to stick around this business for as long as he has done. In the wake of bands like Blink 182, Fallout Boy and the like, we should all thank, God, Buddha, Vishnu, etc for giving us Chris Cornell.

  • I'm happy to see Cornell keeping up with his dream... He deserves it!

Nirvana was groundbreaking in the music industry, I would like to say that I don't think anybody would be remotely this close to where we are in this music genre today if it weren't for Kurt Cobain's in-genius initiative in the first place.

That's why Nirvana was a big deal!

STP was nothing more than plagiarism!...They sucked too!

PJ is a refined version of Nirvana's principles... Musically!!

    -CD

  • WOW, Just say No........

  • Had a somewhat smart opinion until you started talking about other bands. Not every band changes the face of music jackass. STP didn't even sound like Nirvana at all. Grunge was such a broad genre a lot of bands got thrown under the label. And while Nirvana gets a lot of credit for the "Rev.", know that all of those Seattle grunge bands contributed to each other's stuff, and were all intertwined. Nirvana just turned out to be the poster child. Pearl Jam is also one of the greats so get off it.

  • chris, sei un grande solo con questa canzone sei riuscito a commuovermi per il semplice fatto che è l'inno al non-vero-amore!!!

  • michael sounds way better

he needs to atleast keep the same pace

  • It's live... come on...... :\

  • This is one of the best covers I have ever heard

  • i fuckin love cornell

  • oh god.. some of you.. please stop being lame.. they're both singers.. its just whether they can nail songs they sing or not.. chris cornel has been around longer.. cook hasnt..

stop criticizing cook for stealing cornels arrangement.. or not singing it better.. everyone has diff tastes to music.. accept it faggots.. he HAS to take an original or cover.. he cant play something tat everyone hasnt heard of.. stop argueing

4 nonsense.. hmm.. but hey chris ere's the best no doubt. ~ cornell rulez!

  • i agree well sed

  • One of the most listened to songs in my life??? Has to be Sunshower! Wow!! Beyond classic! I cannot describe in one word what that song does for me! I'm all warm and fuzzy inside thinking about it...

  • One day your children will ask you about Chris Cornell, as my grown children ask me about Led Zepplin, etc. ...tell them he was one of the greatest artists of our time.

  • Just look at the short video describing how the song came about, Trndkillah. Choose the video that shows up on the sidebar titled MICHAEL JACKSON COVER IS ART SAYS CORNELL. It was kind of a dare. Brilliant!

  • Actually Soundgarden was a leading force. Moron. If you haven't heard they were the first ones to be signed by a major label.

The actual list in sales strength and popularity was like this:

    1. Nirvana

    2. Soundgarden

    3. AiC

    4. Pearl Jam (who chris helped get famous anyways with Temple of the Dog. vedder's first professional vocal performance was on that album. It was actually considered a Chris Cornell solo album, cuz he wrote everything, til Pearl Jam got bigger.).

  • I don't know about actual numbers and/or which "order" they signed in. The fact remains that Nirvana made it big first. Everyone else achieved success because Nirvana made it possible to do so in mainstream. Yes they each could have still been big w/o Nirvana but probably not to that extent as big labels may not have supported them the way they did etc.

Not only that but you get a -1 digg for listing Alice N Chains as AiC... it's an "N" and it's not hard to spell out anyway.

  • I don't think that Nirvana should get all the credit for paving the way into the maistream. the fact is that soundgarden was the first to be signed by the major label SubPop, they didn't need nirvana for that...

  • Alice In Chains is actually AIC... Where are you getting Alice N Chains from? So now you get a -2.

    :)

  • Pearl Jam? AiC? Ok, maybe Nirvana was more popular with teenage flannel shirt wearing girls, but Soundgarden didn't need covers on Tennbeat and Hit Parade to sell their records. By the way, we are talking about Chris Cornell, not the two dead guys or that whining bitch Vedder. I guess he found out what "fighting the man" will get you, anonymity. Idiot.

  • i could not agree more. Soundgarden was the best band out of that scene. There's a reason that Rick Rubin suggested Cornell to the ex-Rage guys to form a band, just like there's a reason he's had a successful solo career and is working with Timbaland on his next album. He'll never make an album that tops Superunknown though. There was something magical about the way SG played together.

  • I would say that Stone Temple Pilots were the best. Soundgarden was awesome though.

  • "maybe Nirvana was more popular with teenage flannel shirt wearing girls"...

totally disagree, sorry, but i think nirvana were one of the most influential bands ever. i think your assessment is so far off its unbelievable.

  • Rofl. Pearl Jam sells out anywhere they play on earth. Period. And insinuating that Nirvana was only liked by "teenage flannel shirt wearing girls" is so unbelievably retarded I don't even know where to start. And if you really think Soundgarden was a better band than AiC I feel sorry for you. By any measurable standard AiC was better. Better musicians, better songs... period. L-

  • you are fucking retarded Trndkillah........ AIC is not any better than soundgarden.. Chris cornell smokes him at singing....but maybe you prefer them over soundgarden..thats in your opinion..but they were not wayyyy better at anything...i like both bands but soundgarden takes it in my opinion

  • 1. We heard you the first time...

    2. Hows the weather in your world?

  • you are fucking retarded Trndkillah........ AIC is not any better than soundgarden.. Chris cornell smokes him at singing....but maybe you prefer them over soundgarden..thats in your opinion..but they were not wayyyy better at anything...i like both bands but soundgarden takes it in my opinion

  • Chris Cornell is a living legend. Respect him. Honor him. One day your children will be listening to him.

  • wow. i almost choked laughing.

  • Here are the facts:

    1. Chris Cornell is a rock legend with a four octave vocal range who has written and sung countless hits over the past 2 decades.

    2. David Cook is an unproven nobody who sings souless karaoke and will not stand the test of time.

    3. American Idol fans consist of young girls and a bunch of colon caulking fags who would rather watch said karaoke then listen to real musicians.

Considering these facts, how about all of you AI queers, and pedophile loving MJ fans go fuck off.

  • Ooof... Kroy5312! I am a Soundgarden/Audioslave/Cornell fan. Have been since Louder than Love! That Dave Cook can sing, I know he will never ever match Chris. But, even Chris agreed that he was impressed. As was I by first and foremost his ability to select real cool songs. That Cook chic selected Proud to Be an American??? I can smell the cheese from here!

  • Chris Cornell is not as good as Dave C.?????

You must be stoned you idiot.

  • Is this dude stoned? He isn't as good as Dave Cook but I have to give him credit for creating the rendition.

  • a real artist and hes hot unlike dave cook.

  • David Cook is 'Hot' in a 'Different' kind of way!

  • i didnt know that Chris did this version before David did. Until ryan mention that David did chris version. wow Chris so Amazinggggggg. and David too. love them both

  • Anyone ever heard Diese Mikhail's version of Billie jean? Know where to get it?

  • I agree with you on that one fboxberger - the judges did think that David was taking a huge chance doing this song like that, the judges sounded like as if David made it up. But the judges do say over and over again, they have a hard time to hear when Ryan or the contestants are talking over the audience, so i'm sure it was a mistake that they didnt hear that.

DAVID ROCKS!!!!! I HOPE HE WINS :-)

  • Michael JAckson Forever !

  • I agree. I thought Cook did the arrangement himself. I do think Cook did a better job with this song then Chris. Brilliant arrangement from Chris.

  • David Cook from american idol tried to steal this arangement... I am glad he reclaimed it....

  • Really...he tried to steal it...on a nationally televised program that would surely be refuted within seconds of the song starting? Really?

Either David Cook is ridiculously stupid, or AI is terrible at giving credit where credit is due. How hard would it have been for Seacrest to say "and now, with Chris Cornell's version of Billie Jean...David Cook!"

  • rYAN DID INTRODUCE THE SONG AS CHRIS CORNELL'S VERSION. DAVID WAS NOT CLAIMING ANY CREDIT FOR AN ORIGINAL VERSION

  • You could hardly hear Ryan at the beginning

And the judges were implying that David Cook made that whole arrangement, just like the last rock version he did

He performed them amazing, but the show was definately making it look like Cook was coming up with these amazing arrangments

  • I agree. After hearing the judges, I thought David did the arrangement on his own. Silly me, I've never heard the Chris Cornell verison.

  • He did say that, I heard it! No one sings original songs on Idol, geez.

  • Well actually last year Blake Lewis was coming up with original arrangements of popular songs, he even improvised some spots

  • yeah so many people have done what dave has done but not week after week and why i loved blake was that he was original ive never heard bon jovi done like that before and you knew it was original because blake had a very distinctive style whereas dave cook sounds like any american rock group out. Lets face it, we alrady have chris daughtry.

  • Nonetheless - David's the best one of the group!! & he can sing. He possesses a 'cool', smooth style!

  • Ryan did say Chris Cornells version

  • that was the next night after Chris called American Idol and asked them to give him the credit on National TV

  • fboxberger please get your facts right! Ryan said on the performance night "Singing Chirs Cornell's version of Billie Jean, here is David Cook" Then on the results show he said "I talked to Chris Cornell today and he said he loved it".

So people if you are going to spew out information, AT LEAST get your fact straight and correct! Thank you

This has been a paid public announcement. lol

  • thanks for your correction, I did not hear that introduction, I am not sure the judges did either based on the rave reviews... I will rewatch it...thanks

  • no....right before david went on, ryan said singing chis cornells version of billy jean...listen up.........

  • I know that I cant be the only one that is sick of all these women saying AI dude is better then Cornell?

Listen with your ears and not your vagina.

  • I, too, am disappointed. I thought it was David Cook's version. Oh well, I still love him.

  • is he drunk now

  • I say artists perform best when they are drunk.

The fact that Chris doesn't have to be drunk to sing this fervently makes him one the purest artists ever.

  • David Cooks selection was very simular to Chris Daughtrys when he did i walk the line by Johnny Cash, but Chris did the group live version. The judges thought Chris changed it up himself also......

  • Cornell has quit smoking, and his voice is slowly returning to its former glory. And no he's not drunk, he's a reformed alcoholic. He's a pretty intense performer. And for all the people who only know about this song because of the guy on American Idol, show some respect, you wouldn't have even heard that rearrangement if it wasn't for Cornell's genius interpretation.

  • Seriously...All David comments aside. Chris is alright. He sounds like he needs to quit smoking. Bob Dylan is considered one of the greatest artist of all time but damn did he have the most annoying voice I have ever heard. Same concept with Chris.

  • Are you saying Cornell's voice is annoying?

  • I like it better than the original.

  • it CANNOT be better.. the original is untouchable. this version is different not better. Im a big MJ fan but I love this version.best MJ cover ever!

  • fool....

  • Is he drunk?!

  • I agree, it is all Cornell's version, not David. But, maybe it brought a lot of people around to listening to Chris Cornell who never have before.

  • ACTUALLY, i got a bit disappointed upon knowing it wasn't Cook's original arrangement. I LOVE BOTH COOK AND CORNELL, but i wished Cook made his own... WEll, he wasn't cheating actually coz Ryan mentioned it in the intro that Cook is doing cornell's version.

  • gee~Cris Cornell is looking old,I remember him looking way better with facial hair.Oh well, great version of the song...GO DAVID COOK!!!

  • man David Cook fans are gonna come in all the billie jean videos and whine now huh

  • David cooks version is way better than this!

  • Credit Cornell for the arrangement, BUT I prefer David Cooks version. His voice is much more sultry and sensual.

  • Cornell's version is better. He has more vocal range than Cook (about half an octave higher). Not only that, Cornell can sing the version a capella (other versions of Cornell's take on the song are out there) with virtually no musical backing, while Cook's vocal deficiencies are hidden by a loud backup track.

Finally, Cornell originated the version, showing the cavernous of creative gap in talent of Cornell over Cook.

  • You know, I have to disagree on two points. Listen back to David Cook's audition, he had NO sound backup at all, just him, and it sounded really good. Also, look at the change he did to Lionel Richie's "Hello" a couple of weeks ago, that was all him.

I could see a person liking Chris Cornell's version over David Cook's, or vice versa, but you really can't say that Cook doesn't have as much talent. Time will tell I guess.

  • Please tell me you're joking. Have you heard much Chris Cornell? He has a full four-octave range and is one of the premier rock and roll voices of all time. Don't get me wrong. David did a fantastic job.. but we're talking high school football players to NFL here.

  • That would be why I said "Time will tell" I'm not saying he's up to Chris Cornell here and now, but to use your own analogy, all NFL players did start in High School. I'm just talking about talent, not experience. And I do believe that David has quite a bit of talent.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't trying to say that David is better or that Chris is better. I was just merely pointing out that comparisons can't be fairly made yet.

  • That's fair. I think David has a great deal of talent. Although, I fully believe that he wouldn't be able to sing about 30% of Cornell's songs. That's true for just about any male singer though. Cornell doesn't display it like he used to. He still can.. which he'll do on occasion in concert but man.. Audioslave stuff.. wow.. nobody can sing with that kind of range. Unfortunately, most posters here are too young to even remember that band. But agreed.. time will tell on David. Hes good.

  • I'm definitely old enough to remember, and I couldn't agree more. His vocals are beyond amazing. The fact that he took this classic pop song and made it even hotter than it was is a testament to his talent.

I like David Cook and he did the rendition justice but was nowhere near Cornell's level of vocal prowess.

  • If Chris Cornell hadn't recorded this version, that Cook knob wouldn't have performed it.

He owes all credit to Cornell for originality not himself.

Cornell has all the originality and gutz not COOK!!!

A true account of the infectious ignorance and naivety of the north American viewers.

    Cheers to Cornell.

  • Timinator, If I recall, that Cook knob never claimed his own orignality and gutz. That was said by the judges who apparently missed the fact that Ryan said it was Chris Cornell's version. Cook, by having Ryan point that out, was giving the credit to Cornell for the arrangement. You can't blame him for the fact that the judges apparently thought he had come up with all of it himself. I like Cornell quite a bit, and I was happy with Cook's take on his song.

  • Egh, don't lump us all in one category. I am a HUGE Soundgarten fan and was disgusted with David Cook last night. He doesn't hold a candle to Cornell.

  • Here here.

  • David Cook's version is way better... from the arrangement of the song to the singing. The song has rock and also reminds me of some elements from the song by Seal, "Kiss From A Rose". It sounds a bit celtic and haunting the way he sang it, but it still has elements of rock! COOL! Way to go David... I prefer your version!

  • completely agreed!

David Cook has waayy better qualities to his vocals than Chris C. This (Chris C.'s version) is a bit hard to listen to once you have heard David Cook's version!

  • lol. Come on hripsime. Are you serious? You're listening to a concert feed via a 8mm camcorder vs David Cook in front of the best made for tv band ever assembled and then sent through Dolby Supersound. You put Cornell in the same setting, it wouldn't be close. I can understand someone preferring the version. It just has a way better sound quality. But better voice qualities? You're showing a lot of naivety and ignorance in the world of music. David Cook couldn't sing half Chris's songs.

  • Amen! I was about to point that out until I read your comment. :D

  • Chris is the best singer! David C. did a great job with the song, too.

  • I think David Cook should have credited the arrangement to Chris Cornell. We all know Jackson wrote it but the new arrangement was great.

  • Ryan Seacrest said it was Cornell's version... did you not watch it before you comment?

  • David Cook has a looooong way to go before getting into Chris Cornell's league. he is admittedly good, but still a little green.

  • David Cooks voice is much fuller and richer....this version is good, and Chris Cornell actually took this song and made it really interesting, but IMHO david Cook has the better pipes..

  • wow, why don't you do a little research into mr. cornell's great music history and THEN see who has the "better pipes"?

  • I have...and I have seen him in person...so don't even suggest that I am not familiar with his musical history.. and he does have a great voice..I never said he didn't. But one is titled to his or her opinion. What kind of musical training do you have????

  • fair enough. but where did i claim to have any musical training at all? i might as well ask you the same thing, but i wouldnt care either way

  • music was a major..play piano and guitar...listen to everything from opera to the blues, r&r to emo, punk to country..there is good in everyone of them..best friend is a vocal major.

  • the lyrics of the song actually go with the music thanks to Cornell.

Michale Jackson is the originator and wanted to make a dance hit, or something.

However, the lyrics and Cornell's style go hand in hand.

  • i think it's a bit...what's the word...blasphemous to compare david c with chris cornell. i mean, he IS chris cornell so what else can you possibly say, right =)

  • i think it's a bit...what's the word...blasphemous to compare david c with chris cornell. i mean, he IS chris cornell so what else can you possibly say, right =)

  • No question that Chris has the better voice, he is seasoned and amazing but I have to give props to David cook for having the balls to try to pull it off. He sounded amazing in his own way too.

  • Chris Cornell is easily the better singer. I enjoyed David Cook's version, but he has nowhere near Cornell's skills.

  • whoever thinks david can sing better than chris is out of thier mind i did enjoy his version though.Daughtry did the same thing with lives version of walk the line and they didnt give any credit to Ed.

  • No matter what anyone says this version by Chris Cornell is tight. However, David Cook blew it up with the greatness!! I think and hope that Cook will be the next American Idol, but if not, you can be sure that I'll be buying his music. Keep bringing down the house Dave. DPS. 3-26-2008 Seattle 1:10am.

  • Wow, I think this is awesome. Thanks to American Idol for bringing attention to it. Chris Cornell is a vocal god.

  • Look, no one has posted here for a month until tonight. David Cook was incredible! Just because Randy gave David props for being original, shouldn't take away from David's skills. Ryan credited CC before David sang. CC is smiling, I'm sure!!!!

  • Don't blame David Cook for taking chances and doing a version by this guy; there's nothing wrong with that--all the AI contestants have done that at some point or other. Sure, the judges were a ignorant, too, but seeing that MJ's version is the more popular one, they immediately alluded to it. I thought Cook did a great job, and he deserved the kudos given him. Cornell would be proud!

  • david cook was better.

  • I liked David Cook's better, it flowed better with a better vibe, but kudo's for Chris for the arrangement. Actualy this version seemed to drag on and on - kinda bluesy though

  • It was announced on Idol that David cook sang Cornell's version.

  • Still doesn't allow Randy to say it was original and unique.

  • fine, credit was given good and all, but it was ludicrous for Randy to say that he is the most unique original contestant because clearly he is not.

  • Thanks for posting this dgirl, Now we can all hear where David Cook's performance came from and appreciate the true Original aka Chris Cornell; BTW what is the name of Chris's Solo album with this ? Is it Carry on ?

  • cook is a phony,he's an thief in my opinion. i though he had did something great, but he's a fake

  • How is Dave is fake? No contestant is singing an original song? He did a great job. The credit goes to MICHAEL JACKSON!

  • How is Dave is fake? No contestant is singing an original song? He did a great job. The credit goes to MICHAEL JACKSON!

  • Well I have to thank DC for doing Cornell's version. Because I liked so much I decided to look up CC's version. I have never heard of Chris Cornell before. Damn this is hot! LOL the judges' called DC brilliant and so creativity as if he did the arraingement.

  • No offense, but it's kind of weird to see all these people never hearing of Chris Cornell before. He was the lead singer of two of the biggest bands of the last decade or two... Soundgarden? Audioslave? Or even when he sang the theme song of Casino Royale?

  • I agree with Soundgarden...but Audioslave?? They are not one of the biggest bands of the last decade

  • Same here Aceule. I was blown away by Cook's power tonight. I shouldve known it was Cornell's handiwork, I love the dude. Jackson porobably acyually digs it too. I know I do, (all 3 versions.)
