  • @kgarmaker123 I already answered to this last outburst of stupidity from you,but forgot to tell you that all those great singers and conductors thought that she not only perfect technically speaking but also a GREAT ARTIST.

But ,again ,that is only mine and their opinion, you on the other half can pontificate and decide who is an artist and who is not.

Either you are a music teacher or a frustrated singer:one worst than the other.

  • You are really something!!

You think you are a better judge than all those singers!!

Who the fuck are you to determine what is art and what is not?

Are you taking some sort of medication?

Because that is the only excuse I can think of for your irrational behaviour

  • @kgarmaker123 Callas ,after listening to her Lucia, told the general manager of Covent Garden:"you don't need me anymore, you have the best Lucia ever"

Pavarotti told his students to"listen to her records on your knees""

Marilyn Horne said after a perfomance of Norma:"every sound is perfect"

Rene Fleming recently said in public that Sutherland's sound was "matchless""

Daniela Dessi has no words to describe her high notes.

All these great singer's opinions do not count next to yours.....

  • @kgarmaker123 Bullshit, she knew exactly what she was doing, she did not "adapt"anything to any personal need.

When she did her famous Puritani in venice she went with her husband to be heard by Maestro Serafin-il maestro dei maestri-and he said that he has never heard such perfect emission of sound.

He was the best conductor of opera ever, maybe you know more than him being an american.....

  • @kgarmaker123 She was the greatest singer of the 20th century, only an ignorant stupid asshole can describe her singing in the manner that you have done Shut the fuck up and listen!!

  • I saw this production when I was 17 and it is from sydney 1982

  • Best version ever.

  • @callastoujours Her 1973 performance is even better! watch?v=UHJuWQUJwJE

Amazing that she could still nail this piece at age 60.

  • @CaptFitzbattleaxe hahahahah, you're right!!!!!!! I just watched it and it really is!!!!

    God bless her soul!

  • @callastoujours Amen.

  • This is fabulous.

  • Once she got going, nothing could stop her!

  • "ze muzique vill proov eet, in ze melodiez of my homland, an ze vords of my beluved langvuage; sank yoo darling" LOL

  • TIENE UN SEÑORIO DE LA HOSTIA.........CALLAS LO TENIA COMO QUE QUERIA SER BELLA Y GLAMOUROSA.......PERO JOAN SUTHERLAND...TENIA EL SEÑORIO TOTAL Y ABSOLUTO DE LAS FARAONAS Y REINAS......LE SOBRABA EL PODER....Y SUS MOVIMIENTOS ERAN SEÑORIALES Y SEGUROS...SIN POSES....SOLO DE QUE AQUI ESTOY YO Y NADI EME SUPERARA NUNCA......CON TODA LA HUMILDAD DEL MUNDO.....Y ENCIMA CON MUCHA GRACIA......

  • NADIE CANTA ASI..........SOLO ELLA........LA SUPER CANTANTE DE OPERA.....LA SUPREMA .LA MAXIMA ...Y LA ESTUPENDA......

  • I was there!!

  • This was WONDERFUL! I love Joan Sutherland being humorous and playing the part of the Hungarian Countess with the Hungarian accent. And she actually sang the Czardas in Hungarian rather than German. What a great touch! The atmosphere here is lively and fun, just as Die Fleidermaus ought to be. This was truly great - and that being said by someone who isn't a Sutherland fanatic!

  • what language is she singing in?

    thanks

  • @bowmister She's singing in hungarian

  • Non solo la canta come nessun'altra (ascoltare i trilli per credere!), ma la canta a 56 anni d'età. Sempre la più grande di tutte!

  • Fearless, fun, fabulous and coloratura to put most to shame.

Add the age and she final note and its sensational.

    Grandmas get over yourselves.

    She is formidable.

  • Thank you!!!!!!!

There is no one, who have such a grande accent and style.

Still waiting for Charlotte Margiono to do...but...:-((

  • The only time that they had arias transposed down one tone was as she got older, when she was younger they transpose quite a few arias UP a semi tone (there are very good examples of Semiramide recordings)

  • The mask really doesn't help that jawline of hers.

  • HA!

  • You are right

Her tessitura and ability to sing every note is without compromise.

The voice ages but her mastery remains.

Such a fun role but what a voice.

End with an E natural. what more does one want.

  • D natural actually, but yes, it is fabulous!

  • What is so great about this icon is her absolute fearlessness.

God bless her for heroic attack of so many of these roles.

I love her last comments at her final performances which I was lucky enough to see.

The reason I am giving up is that I am tired, these frocks weigh a ton and I cant drag them around anymore.

  • I completely agree. This music SPEAKS to her, and the ferocity and give-it-all-you-have attack is astounding. She was also very funny in the role, and made the Watch Duet as glittering as the Bell Song! Note the bars in the Frischka (fast section) that nobody ever sings in public--the aria is a KILLER! Bless you dear Hungarians for saying that you understand her Magyar--whatever the words mean, she sings as is each phrase is a tribute to beautiful Hungary!

  • Sutherland sings the "CSÁRDÁS" in Hungarian which I think is a marvelous idea! :-D

Especially because the Hungarian lyrics are much more beautiful than the original German...

  • One famous and very pompous Australian academic/music critic complained that he couldn't understaend her diction and "she may as well have been singing in Hungarian." Everyone was very chuffed to read Joan's reply "I was!"

  • haha that's awesome!!! That just goes to show what happens when you try to critique someone who's as great as Joan Sutherland! i just think that's hysterical!

  • This was rather good (excluding the high d in the end). The tessitura is perfect for the older Sutherland.

  • She's amazing.

Does anyone know when/where this production was?

  • It was from the Australian production of Die Fledermaus, in 1985. I hope they release it on dvd!!

  • So do I! Thanks for the info. She's a goddess!

  • @SueAnnNivens They have!

  • @abandapart568 If my source is correct, this is from The Australian Opera, Sydney, 1982.

  • What a wonderful voice, capability and she learned it in hungarian language...

A real Voice and a great artist EVER.

God bless her, for me to hear her to sing this in hungarian makes tears in my eyes/I'm hungarian, of course/

    And I UNDERSTAND her words!!!

  • emmaoth what does she say? :O)

    I love it tooo!!!

  • oh!i see.... it is hungarian!

  • Yes, there's an old humorous anecdote about that. One time she performed this, and a critic exclaimed to her afterwards that her diction was so bad that it sounded like she was singing in Hungarian. She replied, "But sir, I /was/ singing in Hungarian!"

  • what language is this?it isn t the original!!the original is german!!

  • Great performance! Sutherland and operetta were a perfect combination. Her voice sounds unbelievably youthful for her 59 years old (isn't this video from 1985?) and the excitement she creates with her voice and stage presence is outstanding. It's really marvelous to see such a thrilling melody sung with a real sense of joy and such a full-voiced coloratura singing. ;-)

  • very good

  • This women and her voice are not from this world!!!!! She is my favourite soprano forever!!!

  • I remember when a well known Australian crtitic said "Her diction was so bad in the Czardas that might as well have been sung in hungarian".To Joan's reply "But I did sing it in hungarian!!!" , so there.Thank you for taking me all those years back.

  • Dame Joan was no great actress....and never claimed to be. That said, she was a competent actress in most of her roles...enough to convince the audience of the drama.

  • Yes she was, Dame Joan had a strong temperament and she is the ONLY soprano assoluto of the century

  • I agree with you... The Only!!

  • Zsa Zsa Gabor like Sutherland, but what a great show and singing!!!!

And still they say, Sutherland was NO actresse???
