Serves Rinaldo right. I live in Windsor and am I huge Spitfires fan. I've seen Rinaldo play in every year of his professional career including all of his OHL years. You have no idea how many times I've seen him hit guys from behind ruthlessly and then never fight the big guys like Zack Kassian. This is a dirty player hitting an even dirtier player from behind. Respect for the other players, Lucic was conscience enough to take Rinaldo from the side and almost guide him into the boards. Rinaldo admitted himself the hit was clean. This video should've been an example for players of how to correctly execute a hit...while approaching from behind. Clearly a suspension only to quiet the critics.

Doesn't really matter, Shanahan isn't consistent at all with his suspensions on players. To be honest, I'm surprised he suspended Lucic for this and didn't for the hit on Miller. The hit against Miller was a lot more rough, on a goaltender, and resulted in injury but oh well. I agree with the boarding play but imo, should not have been worthy of a 1 game suspension
I've been saying since the 2 games the Red Wings played the Bruins last season that the Bruins are a dirty team. They proved it in the finals with Vancouver last year and this hit further proves my point. Yes this suspension is necessary because it tells the players this stuff will not be tolerated. These kinds of hits can end careers.

No reason for a suspension...if you look closely Lucic hit Rinaldo on the side...right under the armpit...that is where contact is made...he does not put his arms or shoulder into Ronaldo's back...looks like a clean hit to me...even the NHL admitted that the only reason why Lucic was penalized with a suspension was due to his reputation as an enforcer...he gladly defended his buddy Nathan Horton who was hit by 2 guys simultaneously...thats a true example of a teammate.
Rinaldo even said that wasn't a suspendable hit. It was just a make up call for the hit on Miller, which I still believe Shanny was correct in no suspending Lucic.

@pepc72 As for the Cooke Savard incident, that was another era in the league, things were very different two years ago, and that hit did directly contribute to the new rules, at the time there was no rule that allowed for a suspension for that kind of hit, according to Gary Bettman. For comparison to the Lucic hit, compare it with the Rene Bourque on Seabrook hit, Bourque had no previous disciplinary action in 7 season, Lucic had two incidents in a shorter career, the hits were very similar

By the rules, that looks like it could have been a penalty on Boychuk for preventing someone who did not have the puck from playing it, although that kind of thing happens 50 times a game and is called two

Notice the difference between this hit and a clean check. A clean check uses the hips or shoulders (unless directed at the head). Lucic here, instead, used skating momentum and his arms alone.

This hit is not suspension worthy. Rinaldo got right back up. But given Milan's recent history, he may get a game. Shanahan has been pretty consistent with his judgements. The Rene Bourque hit on Seabrook was way worse and not doubt will warrant at least 2 or 3 games and a fine.

Lucic gets a token suspension from the NHL.Cuz this hit was not that bad,hard or dirty.This is proof positive that the league is rapidly losing credibility.The only reason Lucic was suspended was to try and say "see we discipline the Bruins" to answer the critics.The NHL should be suspending the Bruins cheap shot artists on a regular basis.They know that they have a free pass on most of their dirty plays so they just keep getting dirtier.The lack of a suspension on McQuaid is a total disgrace.

Perfect hit. I hope Lucic doesn't change his style of play for this. This is what the NHL is trying to get into players heads. Respect for the other players, Lucic was conscience enough to take Rinaldo from the side and almost guide him into the boards. Rinaldo admitted himself the hit was clean. This video should've been an example for players of how to correctly execute a hit...while approaching from behind. Clearly a suspension only to quiet the critics.

Doesn't really matter, Shanahan isn't consistent at all with his suspensions on players. To be honest, I'm surprised he suspended Lucic for this and didn't for the hit on Miller. The hit against Miller was a lot more rough, on a goaltender, and resulted in injury but oh well. I agree with the boarding play but imo, should not have been worthy of a 1 game suspension

I've been saying since the 2 games the Red Wings played the Bruins last season that the Bruins are a dirty team. They proved it in the finals with Vancouver last year and this hit further proves my point. Yes this suspension is necessary because it tells the players this stuff will not be tolerated. These kinds of hits can end careers.

Lucic is a strong man, even Rinaldo says it was a clean hit. They only suspended him to keep people like you who think physical hockey is dirty hockey happy.

@touchtoomuch1000 I got no beef with physical play and big hits. My problem in hockey is when people play dirty. There is no reason to hit someone in the numbers or aim at their head. Regardless of what sweater they wear, at the end of the day it's their livelihood and how they take care of their families. To maim or injure someone to the point they may not play the game again is not right. Lucic is a goon, not an enforcer. HUGE difference.

No reason for a suspension...if you look closely Lucic hit Rinaldo on the side...right under the armpit...that is where contact is made...he does not put his arms or shoulder into Ronaldo's back...looks like a clean hit to me...even the NHL admitted that the only reason why Lucic was penalized with a suspension was due to his reputation as an enforcer...he gladly defended his buddy Nathan Horton who was hit by 2 guys simultaneously...thats a true example of a teammate.

Rinaldo threw a hit from behind, not into the boards....Lucic threw a hit from behind, could clearly see the numbers, he hit him high and drove him into the boards, only got one game because it appeared there was no injury, would have gotten more with injury......that in unbiased opinion, now biased opinion.....Bruins have got off light time after time since last spring, and should have been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs but for the officiating, if Lucic is not a Bruin, 3-5 games

@pepc72 As for the Cooke Savard incident, that was another era in the league, things were very different two years ago, and that hit did directly contribute to the new rules, at the time there was no rule that allowed for a suspension for that kind of hit, according to Gary Bettman. For comparison to the Lucic hit, compare it with the Rene Bourque on Seabrook hit, Bourque had no previous disciplinary action in 7 season, Lucic had two incidents in a shorter career, the hits were very similar

He then rides Raymond into the corner with stick between Raymond's legs, causing him to lose balance, then at the boards Boychuk lunges forward to drive Raymond to the board

Answer, head shots are the hot button issue, you can break a back or neck, just don't hit the head. Horton was ready to go at the start of this season, Raymond just came back in early December....objectively speaking, do you think that was justice???

Remember, sometimes the onus is on a player to not put himself in a vulnerable position, which Raymond clearly did.

@pepc72 I digress, just watched the video of Boychuk and Raymond again...he did not put himself in a vulnerable position, the play happened too quickly for him to do that, however, interference on Boychuk? That was a puck battle, Boychuk had every right to fight for his ice on that play and finish the check. You can't say Raymond didn't have possesion, because neither did Boychuk, meaning Raymond would have been just as guilty of interference...puck battle.

@SuperSizmo You are trying, I appreciate it, but on that hit, Raymond had position, would have taken control of the puck but he was put off balance by a stick between his legs by someone who did not have position to play the puck, so I'm not following how Raymond was interfering with Boychuk. By the rules, that looks like it could have been a penalty on Boychuk for preventing someone who did not have the puck from playing it, although that kind of thing happens 50 times a game and is called two

Notice the difference between this hit and a clean check. A clean check uses the hips or shoulders (unless directed at the head). Lucic here, instead, used skating momentum and his arms alone.

This suspension is as much in part that he got a pass on the Miller one which was worse than this in my opinion. Had the Miller hit have not happened I would say he doesn't get suspended on this hit. This hit is not suspension worthy. Rinaldo got right back up. But given Milan's recent history, he may get a game. Shanahan has been pretty consistent with his judgements. The Rene Bourque hit on Seabrook was way worse and not doubt will warrant at least 2 or 3 games and a fine.

As a sabres fan, there isn't anyone I hate more than Lucic in the NHL right now. Even I don't think this is suspendible. I wouldn't go so far to say it was clean, but it wasn't very dirty either. 5 and a game was also too much. 2 for boarding would have been plenty. I hope Shanahan doesn't use this situation as an opportunity for a make-up suspension.
