I was at the CMU show, and the dude was definitely not playing his best. He was high, I have no doubt in my mind. I lost a lot of respect for him that night, my band and I actually walked out of his performance it was seriously that bad. So no, this CMU talk is not a hoax, it was an atrocity to jazz.
Can everyone please stop commenting on Payton being high or not. Just let the shit go. I'll be surprised if he is doing drugs. But 'til this moments it's a rumor. Hey Miles Davis did drugs and everyone love his raspy, never practiced sound.
@trumpsahead I think you are a bit off on your analysis. Granted, I have heard Payton play some more intricate lines, but the interactions at around 1:25 are not the result of overdubbing.
Hi, my comment was a year ago - I just relistened, my original comment was nasty and faulty. I find it now to be a clean easy going matter of fact kind of tune, fits my mood this Saturday early afternoon. I removed my comment because even if I apparently didn't like it at the time, it was definitely inappropriate. Fact is, wish I could sound like that.
@trumpsahead Didn't mean to come off a bit dark and scathing myself, no hard feelings man! Fact is all of us trumpet players would probably try to sound like Nick if we could! That cat sure has all the gears turning: a beautiful sound, a soulful, vocal approach to every single note he plays, all the language, harmony, and reverence for the tradition and huge ears! One of my favorite trumpet players in the history of our music for sure!
What a bad show Nicholas Payton put on at CMU. He was high out of his mind and sounded terrible. He left in the middle of the last tune and rumor has it that he was found a half hour after the concert sitting on the sidewalk by the library. I am a senior in the music program at CMU and I was embarrassed that all the young musicians had this as the closing concert. Does anyone have audio or video from the concert that can go up?
if it was a bad show, why would you want to put it up? everyone has bad days, have you not had bad days? how would you feel if someone wanted to put up videos of you on your worst day. be respectful, even though he may have been high, I really doubt that he intentionally sounded bad. He always plays his ass off.
@Elliot84 I'm starting to wonder if all of this CMU bull is a hoax. I keep seeing this noise on every Peyton thread from different handles. And how the hell would the student body even know that he was or was not high, anyway? I can almost guarantee he wasn't doing any drugs in front of them. So it's pure hip-shooting and speculation, at best, and hateful trolling at worst.
@ksyalxe Shit almost every killing cat I kno smokes weed and I kno a lot of cats, doc. Being high has nothing to do with a bad performance, which is a matter of opinion, at all. I know cats that use heavy shit and get on stage and rip. Now I am not saying its ok for them to use the heavy shit, but hell even CEOs have drinks at lunch and politicians get fucked up too at work as we can see with some of the laws that we have...lol
Nice interpretation of this song...inventive harmonies. Has a bit of a 'Johnny Was' Marley feel in the bass.
