In 1918 Latvia decleared its Independence as a Free and Democratic Country. The German and Russian Monarchists had something to say about that they invaded Riga the Capital of Latvia with the intent to forcing Lativa back into Monarchist control. I have yet to get a sensible answer about my "Rigas Sargi" question. The hero fought against Germany for both Tzarist and then communist Russia. This took place between 1915-1919. The Soviet Union created the free Republic of Latvia while the Germans were undermining it in an effort to take over all of the Baltics. It seems that Latvia is ungrateful to Russia. Because of Russia, independent Latvia was born while Germany wanted to negate it. So when Russia entered Latvia in '40, the Lats should have understood that Stalin needed a reliable buffer against Hitler and should have welcomed the Russians with flowers. This move isn't very historical. Actually we are making another movie at the moment to explain the historical misunderstandings in this movie. :) Estonians helped extensively in the northern front and went as far as Riga (before the portrayed times in this movie). I don't know if there was any involvement of Estonians in battle against Bermont in Riga because this battle took place after the Cesis' battle and Latvian army (with Estonians) taking Riga. Peace treaty with Goltz was signed where he claimed that he has no rights for Latvia's land and Estonians probably had already gone home.
Nobody has forgotten Estonians, only the fact is Estonians went into Riga on July 1919 but this battle took place in November 1919. So probably Estonians had already left.

The German and Russian Monarchists had something to say about that they invaded Riga the Capital of Latvia with the intent to forcing Lativa back into Monarchist control. Latvians across the country rushed to Riga to defend their New Independence. My own late Grandfather was a Riga sargi's. Let us never forget Latvians what it costs to be Free! :)

In 1939 Latvians were 77% population in Latvia, in 1989 Latvians were 52%.
This was due to colonization of our territories from other - less advanced regions of Soviet Union, most of whom were Russians, this was not a coincidence, but planned policy of soviet government.
That's why we have large amount of minorities in Latvia these days, most of whom hate this country.
That's why we're in EU and NATO these days, to be secured from Russia and their activities, whatever they might be.

From nazi Germany in Latvia died about 80'000 innocent people, most of whom were Jews, from Soviet Union died over 100'000 innocent people, most of whom were Latvians. First invaders were Soviet Union, after signing pact of Molotov-Ribentrop in which Germans gave green light for Soviets to take over Finland, eastern Poland, parts of Bulgar and 3 Baltic countries.
Stalin deportations to Siberia was in 1941 and 1949, RIGHT BEFORE WW2 and 4 years after it, these were innocent people.

K. Ulmanis dictatorship began only after overthrow of 1934, which was after year long political crisis (parties couldn't make one coalition for government). He had all the support from majority of people in Latvia + army general, police general and rest of armed forces generals on his side.
He did not made any single shot, he only arrested some of politicans, and thats all.
and this regime was 14 years later than events in this movie, till that (14 years) Latvia was parlamentarian republic.

So he MADE ALLIANCE WITH GENERAL BERMONT - RUSSIAN former czarist general.
They went in prisoner camps and released russian captives and enrolled them into new army

I have yet to get a sensible answer about my "Rigas Sargi" question. The hero fought against Germany for both Tzarist and then communist Russia. This took place between 1915-1919. The Soviet Union created the free Republic of Latvia while the Germans were undermining it in an effort to take over all of the Baltics. Germany clearly has been the enemy of the Baltics but those same Baltics fought alongside Hitler to destroy their benefactor. Are Balts just plain crazy?

It seems that Latvia is ungrateful to Russia. Because of Russia, independent Latvia was born while Germany wanted to negate it. So when Russia entered Latvia in '40, the Lats should have understood that Stalin needed a reliable buffer against Hitler and should have welcomed the Russians with flowers. But instead, treacherously, Latvia turned against Stalin and threw in with Hitler.
This explains why Latvia was punished by the Soviets after WWII ended. Stalin hated perfidy which Latvia practiced.

In addition my fathers was a POW taken at Trobruk, who had no hatred towards the German people or her armies. My uncle was a POW of the Japanese who suffered starvation at AMBON. As for the ANZACS and the Waffen? Waffen SS marched with return servicemen on ANZAC day. We have a large contingent of Waffen ss in Australia as demonstrated by Konrad Kalis dumped back in aus by your government and the workers on the snowy river scheme. A couple even married Jewish women. The RSL had no problem with the Aust Army using Leopard tanks, or f-88 steyers.
They had hugh problems however when the army wanted to use Japanese Nissen patrols - that was not allowed.

The first Latvian Legion unit was the 2nd Latvian SS Brigade, created in February 1943. It fought its first battle defending German positions near Leningrad, opposite the Pulkovo observatory on 18 March, 1943. It continued fighting around Leningrad until the German forces retreated in January 1944. Latvia fought in the Courland Pocket until the Reds cut them to ribbons which forced their surrender & 45 years of occupation. Satisfied now?

In September of 1939 the Soviets demanded of the three Baltic states that they accept Soviet military bases and a limited number of troops on their territories. While all three governments were forced to agree, this formally did not affect the sovereignty of the three states.
Full military occupation occurred in June of 1940. This illegal annexation was never recognised by western governments, it was illegal. Like the soviet invasion of Poland.

On June 14, 1940, in order to speed up the process of Latvian surrender to the USSR in accordance with Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, the Soviet army attacked a frontier Latvian village of Maslenki just on Soviet-Latvian border. Six Latvian citizens, among them a kid and a woman, were killed while 43 other local residents and border-guards were kidnapped by the Soviets. By June 17, the Red Army troops occupied the country.

Who can blame the Russians? Nazism was infecting the Baltics so Stalin needed naval and land bases. If you were Stalin, wouldn't you want a strong defense? Meanwhile it was Stalin who was responsible for killing 80% of all German troops in WWII so give him some credit. Had you and the other Balts not lined up with Hitler, all of you would have gained freedom but you wanted Russia destroyed and Stalin turned the tables on you. I hope the Balts learned their lesson by behaving cordially.

2/ Those German troops you speak off so freely came from all over Europe.
3/ Balts only lined up with Hitler after the forced deportation of their own people. Given that policemen and their familys were targeted you can forgive Latvia for the state of lawlessness that resulted.
4/ Stalin invaded a sovereign democratic state.
5/ using your justification, it is therefore perfectly acceptable for every country next to Israel to invade and enslave.

Yet history is proving that you are right about Iraq even though it was a brutal dictatorship. We should have concentrated on the Taliban and al-Qaeda. We are now. actually the Courland pocket didn't surrender until after May 9th which is why soviet may day parade is this date. The Reds couldn't take Courland so they went around it. The troops in the Courland were actually waiting for the US to come and free Latvia and Poland,(and I am sorry Kurt Meyer didn't get his way), alongside Janis Lipke who was hiding Jews in Riga. So no not satisfied, you don't get your order of Lenin just yet.

Please understand that this movie is increadibelly short and only covers some action in Riga military collision.
The military operations were much longer than few days, the most massive fights went on for 2 weeks.
I am actually dissappointed they didn't make it more accurate. They could have made 2 movies instead with even more graphic fights etc.
Also Britain assisted with ships and Latvia had quite an arsenal (however nothing compared to Bermont's)

Haven't seen this film yet...is it out? It is my sincere hope that the film was created with deep respect for the passionate Latvian spirit that is a dedication to peace and happiness. Dievs Sveti Latviju, and may God bless the soldiers who fought and lost their lives (on any side of any battle), guided by loyalty, in our current "dark ages" of human civilization, where conflicts are resolved through violence. Latvians have forgotten Estonians in this movie, it means that they really did not wanted to fight for their freedom not so much.. and it's really embarrassing that they didn't told that Estonian army was the army, which fought most of battles in Latvia, for example battle of Võnnu (Cesis)

This move isn't very historical. Actually we are making another movie at the moment to explain the historical misunderstandings in this movie. :) Estonians helped extensively in the northern front and went as far as Riga (before the portrayed times in this movie). But the greatest help was in the north wich also was a crucial battleground. We have to make another movie about that, ok? :)

I don't know if there was any involvement of Estonians in battle against Bermont in Riga because this battle took place after the Cesis' battle and Latvian army (with Estonians) taking Riga. Peace treaty with Goltz was signed where he claimed that he has no rights for Latvia's land and Estonians probably had already gone home.
Nobody has forgotten Estonians, only the fact is Estonians went into Riga on July 1919 but this battle took place in November 1919. So probably Estonians had already left.

The Nazis and the Soviets had no right to lay claim to Eastern Europe in 1939. Why do you think that the Russians kept that fact a secret for so many years after the war.
By June 30, 1941 the Latvian people had just experience a year an a half of brutal occupation. Their entire educated elite had been liquidated by NKVD along with other Soviet apparatchiks aggressively filling up their quotas of people to send to Siberia.
