There are consistently 12 spooks in this film, and if they're grouped, it is almost always in 6's or 3's. He put more thought into the symbolism in this than we realize
anyone knows / remember the "duet dance" or whatever its name was, by McLaren? it's the one filmed of two ballet dancers and the music is gypsy Romanian music.
@dadautube - It's called "Pas de Deux", and McLaren used an optical printer to create multiple images of the dancers, breaking down each of their movements into its individual fragments---essentially allowing us to see the dancers' live-action movements as an animator would.
So you think, this is shit? Norman McLaren was an awesome artist in his age, master in experimental methods of animation and I am not ashamed to tell, he is a father of abstract animation. Can you see, this film was made in 1940? And he didn't use camera for making it, all u see is drawing inside the format of 35mm film material. So next time read some articles and learn something before you start to criticize others work.
Stai appena leggendo la catena di Osiris.. Un demone si è impossessato di una bambina...se non scrivi questa catena in altri 5 video in 3 minuti stanotte la bambina/demone comparirà nella tua stanza
yes, mary ellen bute is the artist here. it would be cool if you added that to the info area or changed the title to reflect that. thanks for posting it!!
I saw it included in a program of Mary Ellen Bute's work, with the original film reels on loan from the artist's sole distributor...seems that she is the filmmaker and Mcclaren is the animator but I'm not sure what that distinction really means for her.

Was this inspired by Disney's fantasia?
Um....this was made WELL before fantasia...fantasia the film used the same music, different animation, but if you know what year you are in now then you should well be able to determine that the year this was made was before fantasia...thanks for making my stupid ppl list :)
Rutheeyesofachild, you and your wacky "stupid ppl list :)" are at it again...
I do agree that the Surrealfilmgeek's question is a bit suspicious, this film was not made "WELL before fantasia". Fantasia was released in 1940 and it had been in production years before "Spook Sport" was released in 1939. These two films probably had no influence over each other. The conncept of abstract animation set to music was not a new one, Oskar Fischinger had been working for over ten years by this time.
I guess some things are in the air at a certain time, and creatives just feel them, and then express them. I love McLaren much more than Disney, but Disney can't possibly be despised.
um........Jessikacurto, if you can define "dumb people" you should well include yourself...it is called "Mary Ellen Bute's Spook Sport"....the ANIMATION is BY Norman McLaren...."there's your sign"...it says below the title that is is animated by Norman....thanks for making my day and my stupid ppl list :)
homer simpson, bart simpson, grandpa simpson are want to ballet! but michaelangelo, kaycy jones, & tsujimoto natsumi are didnt wont going to bed before midnight (24.00 hrs)
absolutely not...Disney's fantasia is some kind of "pseudo-art" - this is experimental animation...McLaren did similar things from his students times...it is made in same year like fantasia, but it is the only thing, what is same on these two films.
Agreed! I don't even like Fantasia. In terms of animation being an art form of expression through motion, Fantasia is a snooze-fest of pretty but boring paintings that happen to move on the screen. I'll take Len Lye, Norman McLaren or Paul Driessen over Disney any day!
i think, bute made the main line of story etc but animation is by mclaren...i am not sure if mclaren is director of this one. but he did a lot of better things than spook sport is.

It says on imdb that they were both directors along with Ted Nemeth and that Norman McLaren also produced it.

This is by Mary Ellen Butte, not Norman McLaren. She was also an early pioneeer of computer animation.
