Hello. Laura's cousin Danny here. Thank you for jogging the wonderful memory of the many Bottom Line shows I attended in 1988. Laura was the embodiment of just how you'd imagine "Emily." Her explanation for this song was that it was "about the eternal feminine." Laura the young woman lyrically longs for, but ultimately kisses goodbye the fading innocence of her girlhood. A lovely and unique expression of self-realization. A treasure, and I'm so happy you've given it life here. My best.. Dan.
Always loved Laura's music. The great songs she wrote that other people had hits with. Always wondered how she thought of the artists like 5th Dimension and Three Dog Night that covered some of her tunes. Love her use of parallel minor and major 7s in her tunes. Lot's of her stuff makes me recall Burt Bachrach tunes of the 60s. This one (Emmie) kind of takes me back to the style that Carole King used for her compositions on 'Tapestry'. Betcha Carole was a big fan and close observer of Laura's.
Emmie was written as a tribute to Laura's Mother many years before meeting Maria. I have loved her since 1968, listen to and see her in my mind daily and will never let her go. Pat O
An old 70's group, Green Lyte Sunday, did an interesting cover of this tune. In fact, until stumbling around youtube, I'd always thought they had written it.
LOVE this song!!! It is Laura's Love Song for Maria Desiderio, and what a Love Song it is. Laura is SO quintessentially New York. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH, Laura
@atisaseret - i read that laura's mother was the inspiration for this song. i don't know much about her relationship with maria (wikapedia says they started living together in 1980). did they know each other in '68, about the time "emmie" was written? thanks for any info. ciao.
@6ganey9 - You know something? There are SO many different theories out there, but what I do know is this, Laura met Maria Desiderio when she was standing on line to see Laura perform, and they eventually struck up a friendship. Maria was VERY young at the time. Maria was living out in California and one day Laura showed up at the Shop that Maria co-owned along with her then partner Zoe. The rest is History.
@6ganey9 - As you may already know, She and Maria spent at least 17 years together until Laura's death on April 1997. Laura was not a Militant Lesbian - like someone had said earlier - She was a natural Bi-Sexual who loved both Men and Women, but who just happened to find her niche and Love with another Woman. She never had to pretend to be different - Laura was/is Extraordinarily Gifted and Unique in just about EVERYTHING! She was a Kind, Generous, Gifted and Loving person. I miss her So!!!
1st woman identfied song I ever heard. TY Laura for being you. RIP.

@DanLNigro
Dan, this was one of Laura's most beautifully written songs in poetry, as well as musically. The lyrics are so heartfelt, and the melody is haunting.

@wildnites558 Laura once said that others' recordings of her songs were "like an ice cream soda." I'd say that sums it up!

I still love Laura Nyro. Every time I hear her, I think of my college days in my dorm room with my albums.
