@grips1000 Great video! Nice to see the real thing, I've flown that approach a few times in the sim at the BA Training centre. G-VIIA. Is it normal to have the captain talk you down like that?
@Matthington on this approach it is quite common as it is quite a challenging approach. In fact some people and pilots compare it to kai tak's checkerboard approach due to the large turn required just before touchdown.
This is indredible. What a lovely video. Thank you so much for posting this. I often fly BA between LHR and JFK, but obviously not in the flight deck but the rather nice WT+ or CW cabin.
I've had two aborted landings on BA 747's at JFK. Once coming in over Jamaica at dark, windy and visual. TOGA was initiated at a few feet above grass... we where way off the centre line! Second was due to AC on RWY. Seeing this video shows the professional, calm and good crew BA have, both cabin and cockpit.
One of the best aviation videos on Youtube ive seen. very nice to hear cockpit chatter between Captain and FO. and also the non-standard comments from the captain i find a nessescity on a vis approach like Canarsie 13L...great vid, thanks
Basically for two reasons. A straight line interferes with La Guadia Airport, and you are required to stay inside the bay for noise abatement. Glad you like the video.
Oh wow, this is why I love flying with BA, relaxed but professional. Can't wait till I get my security pass sorted out so I can jumpseat on my flights with BA!
Oh and any reason the call outs done by the woman, seems only BA do it?
Oh, well that is a shame, just about to start my training in AUH, but BA is what I dreamed of flying with all my childhood... Even on (parents) staff travel and with correct ID you cannot jumpseat?
For all the pilots who don't like this approach, try crossing Canarsie as dirty as you can for the speed tower wants (if it's 180 knots, no big deal). Cross DMYHL at 1,200 feet, cross abeam the race track at 800 feet and you will pick up the VASI glidepath. These guys were high (white over white VASIs) and landed almost 3000 feet down the runway. I agree with grips1000 that the Captains' frequent non-standard comments are counterproductive.
there were coordinates after DMYHL put together by some hot shots for this approach you can program in the box, but LNAV is probably not a very desireable way to fly it
always fly it with a lot of comments from the other guy on the background.. ha, try to get it stabled at 300AGL.... hik still hate it
DMYHL is a published waypoint in this particular approach which you can find in the FMC navigation database, wait I think the "hot shots" I've mentioned was from speedbird (big airlines)
crazy JFK controlers wanted a heavy to maintain 180Kts at Carnarsie, 2 guys tried to negotiate but failed, see they always push you to do that, just add some more complexity and workload
so I say these controllers really ought to see how busy pilots are in the cockpit doing this not-so-well designed approach
I live just outside JFK, and you should see how many aircraft they handle in a single minute. Also, if you haven't noticed, JFK and La Guardia both have runways facing heading 040 and 130, so you can't have aircraft approaching runways on top of each other.Especially with New York's air traffic. We have the busiest skies and the most delays of any airport in the country, which puts even more strain on the controllers.
I personally don't like the approach and it might be the approach that I'll fly later tonight, well that's life what can u do
it keeps u on your toes, I think all the comments and non-standard callout about the descent rates were made by the captain, FO was trying to make a constant rate descent but see it's a big aircraft, there were winds to the right of flight path all and all make it challenging, so I say this approach sucks but also rewarding after you finally put your heavy down on TDZ
hey these comments were non-standard but just necessary to ease up the
crews' nerves, making sure the descent is properly managed....again this approach is a good example of a very bad design just because of the noise abatement needs
are you insane? 41000ft must have been at least 15 mins before they landed... they were just prolly being handed down from NY Center to approach to start descent...geesh.... lol
This is a normal Carnarsie approach, not a training flight - the approach is particularly challenging, and such callouts are not limited to British Airways by any means: even experienced crews will work together to ensure the most appropriate descent profile is maintained.
The Canarsie approach is very similar to Kai Tak. Kai Tak had the added dangers of obstacles, though. In order to land at Kai Tak, you needed to first fly straight toward a mountain and thread your way through tall buildings. JFK is surrounded by relatively flat terrain.
What type of aircraft is this? At first I thought Concorde because of the altitude (41,000) at which it was flying, but then noticed both the glass cockpit and use of flaps. Nice video!

Good video! Curious, why does that approach for that runway way make you go in a circle and not come in a straight line?

Grips1000 did not say that. The landing was 500 feet beyond the aimiing point certainly not 3000ft down the runway.
