@PacisVictus Its a right hand lead swiss triplet. If you can't find it on the internet... Its RRL RRL RRL RRL RRL RRL RRL. Then double the L so the second left stroke is playing at the same time or just before (a flam) the first R (right hand stroke) of each group of three. At the beginning of the video he starts with the 2 right handed triplets and quietly adds in the Left handed triplets after about 10 or so seconds. Then he just moves around the kit with that same sticking.
@MrDrums8 Good breakdown. The way I learned is I got the swiss, then I matched the bass beat up with the right hand playing doubles and ignored the swiss till I got that. Then I added the hats and when that came through, I started practicing with the swiss over it all. Moving around the kit is the next step!
@PaulWykel Ok. And now keep the rythm, control intensity, tune your drums right on and put your soul into it to maybe...perhaps play a semi-version of this :p
@PaulWykel Well, I see why you think that, but look closely. Can you see what he's doing? He's playing three kinds of triplets at once: a 4/4 shuffle pattern in his hands, a 6/8 on the kick and a 3/4 on the hi-hat. It requires a very, very great deal of skill to come up with it and play it too.
Although i agree with djmarkj22, he forgot Chad Sexton and Carter Beuford. Both equally as talented, yet completely different styles between the 3 of them. Thos 3 are the greatest around right now.
holy shit this should get recognised world wide, the most creative and difficult piece on the drums ive ever heard, and the double bass is quite fast as well. but the thing im amazed with is the sticking on the toms with the double bass and his amazing limb independance
@ryder187mac no what im trying to say is, when i look up top drummers lists and stuff, people always include the lateralus drum vid he did where he was actually on tv, im trying to say i want every1 who thinks mike portnoy or neil peart should see this cause fuck me this is hard to pull off, but even more so, he created it
@ryder187mac I just think this simply is more skilled than any drummer. his limb independance is not human i swear, and listen to pushit live on salival. it has a table solo that is like WTF! impossilbe stuff. not to mention danny remembers every odd fill he does
this guy eats little pissant "blink 182" type drummers as a snack.....or maybe i should just come out and say it.... he eats travis barker as a snack, there ya go.
@paisteuser06 It was exactly the same thing for me too. Sometimes I set my standards way to high for other bands, forgetting that they are not anywhere near the skill level of Tool.
I mean this seriously, this has to be unrecognised as one one of the greatest live drum performances; the dexterity, precision and consistency puts it easily up there with people who are famous for solos: Peart, Bonham, Cobham, Portnoy, Baker, etc...
the very first time i tripped on acid (which was either some of the best i ever got, or it was simply so perception-shattering because it was my trip), i rode the guitar when it came in. i will never forget that day. ever. lateralus must have played all the way through about 6 times, and every time was more amazing than the last.
@FunkDawg96 No no no, that's not right. Yes, he is an awesome drummer, that we all agree to, BUT, you really shouldn't blame yourself for not having his level of drumming. He got that level of awesome because he practiced, and if you practice, you can also become that great. Don't throw in the towel because you believe someone's better than you.
@LeonSKennedy515 what about buddy rich and dave weckl...i know there jazz drummers but they both play a mean drum solo...and i mean no disrespect to danny carey but these two guys did it before him...
i love how he builds the beat from the start, sounds epic.... like pretty much everything else he does. I wouldn't mind trying to get that intro beat down for myself though
For you guys asking, I saw it on his personal website. I'm not sure if it is still there; I haven't visited the site in over one year. He thinks he is Thor or something also. Judging by his arms, maybe he is lol.
I got to kick it with Danny Carey on my birthday. The single greatest memory of my life. He is such a nice human being. If you're in L.A. Go see Volto at the Baked Potato. Hearing his drums from 5 feet away was like being in a Dream :)
@cradleofrobert good call there broski, if there was something in seattle spectacular id hook you up but we haven't produced a musician in the same league as Danny Carey since Jimi H. now all i hear is dubstep and pretty soon people are going to start getting hit!
i always like when people bash carey in favor of other... while skilled drummers, not knocking them, but they like to dismiss danny for not having technicality but he is more creative than a lot of drummers with "better" chops. that is what counts, the creative mind and how it incoperates a kit into the mix, not just what you can physically do to "show off". Can't think of many drummers who could create what danny has, and he has made quite the library of amazing beats and rhythms...cheers dan
I remember a girl tried to tell me one night that travis from blink182 was prob the most amazing drummer ''out there'' at the moment. I should have punched her in the face but i was too busy getting sick. Fuckin idiot!
@Fourchette22 He is the creation, he was born from pure ingenuity. He transcends time and space every time he touches a drum kit, let alone grace my ears with his clear talent. If there is any such "superior being", Danny is that being. Now obviously it is ridiculous to think this from any one human being, but that's just the feeling I get when I listen to Danny, and most certainly Tool. I also jizz my pants..
You wanna see control, just watch the f*ckin high hat. Completely unreal. Hope I can say with without sounding like a fucking fanboy, but this dude is immortal.
Yeah, he wasn't born with it. He has played since he was 12 or 13, went to college and learned there, sought tutors in specific methods of rhythm and practiced his butt off. And of course he astrally projected himself to the stars and placed a drum on different stars and was told to play a specific rhythm which opened up a portal from hell and let Paimon enter him and Paimon plays the rhythms for him. If you think that is crazy fine, but it came from his website.
@flatlandsapex he started playing for his school when he was 10. So he is claiming to be under the direct influence of demonic forces while he plays. this can only mean 1 of 3 things. 1) Paimon is in fact enlightening danny on how/what to play. 2) danny is suffering from a drug related reaction and his brain and is oddly chemically imbalanced making him mildly insane or 3) he is full of complete shit. and to be honest, i don't know which of the 3 i find more disapointing =/
@pyromatic77 ask flatlandspacex. he claims to have read the qoute on his website. i've tried finding it but i can't seem to. judging by what i've discovered about him, it would not suprise me.
This goes to show you that the best drummers aren't the ones who simply mash on the double bass pedal a million miles an hour. This guy is one of the most creative drummers I have ever seen and he shines in this song.
@dmarkj22 I totally agree, take a guy like Nicko Mcbrain, (Iron Maiden) He plays a single bass drum, single pedal and plays with his barefeet! And he can do massive bass drum fills.
@xReinhartx Sorry man, I read your comment wrong. I guess the song is irrelevant anyway, tool's message and all of their songs are badass... my bad for even questioning - I'm just glad there's another tool fan!
@4DPositive i have four way coordination and it's very good... might i suggest also advanced techniques for the modern drummer as applied to be-bop and jazz by jim chapin and new breed by gary chester. those 2 books paired with four way coordination will do ALOT for your drumming ability. simply the best books if you would like to play the style of carey... of course, the creativity part is something you simply can't read a book about. that comes within.
@Hyperboi4evr Because he's really an octopus. I've done research. he uses 5 arms to drum, 1 to smoke a cigar, 1 to drink scotch, and the other to masturbate.
so unreal, danny is such a beast. his ability to turn the drums from simply a rhythmic instrument to a musical instrument is unparalleled. triad is such a great song, too (or third movement of an entire composition, if you want to look at it as one along with disposition and reflection)
I'll be seeing Tool in St. Paul, Minnesota on the first of July, hell yeah...so pumped!
I might start a new religion :D In wich Danny would act as God... Dunno how it's gonna be called... I was thinking about something like " Awesomenism "... Maybe "Ass-Kicking-Ism ? " :O !!
My good friend met Danny in Silverlake last year and did not even know who he was. He was later told by another individual that he had just drank a beer with one of the Greatest Drummers to have ever walked this earth. Lucky Bastard!

so unreal, danny is such a beast. his ability to turn the drums from simply a rhythmic instrument to a musical instrument is unparalleled. triad is such a great song, too (or third movement of an entire composition, if you want to look at it as one along with disposition and reflection)
I'll be seeing Tool in St. Paul, Minnesota on the first of July, hell yeah...so pumped!

My good friend met Danny in Silverlake last year and did not even know who he was. He was later told by another individual that he had just drank a beer with one of the Greatest Drummers to have ever walked this earth. Lucky Bastard!
