  • Why does this guy still have a cane, if he can jump around like that? Hell, when I started to use a cane at 26 it was 'cause I couldn't stand up without it. And as soon as I felt I could move around 1/100th as well as this guy, I'd snap the thing in half. Until my condition worsened and I'd wind up buying another. I still prevailed in fights with several younger assholes, because of painkiller induced invincibility, and not drinking - people get into fights in the first place due to drinking.

  • just amazing!!! i wish he was my grandpa lol

  • This looked good for a nice work out but, I was wondering if you would be willing to show us a simple cane drill we could go through along with this. I have no interest in picking a fight but it would be nice to be a little proficient with my weapon of choice in case I had to fight.

  • Perhaps it is just me. But it seems many of the comentors share one fundamental misconception. You change yourself for competition in martial arts. Martial arts today being a sport, with rules that must be followed. And in competition you are dealing with indaviduals of similar skill levels who CAN move fast enough to grab your hair. In self defense simply thier are no rules, no regulations and no holds barred. Self defense is learned on the off chance you should be unable to AVOID a fight.

  • Not so that you can fight at a prearranged time, in a prearanged manner. As for the gentleman in the video. Thank you good sir for shareing your knowledge. I am currently learning cane fighting, and I will be incorperateing your warm up into my own excercises.

  • Respect!

  • Well of course as we get old we have limitations,(aaak) but them my best instructors were in thier eighties and nineties and still teaching and givng lesson on humilty.

Once we stop is when we get old.

Personally we use adapted Bokken or hanbo and teach kenjutsu and Kuroda-Ha Jojutsu techniques, As these schools use their weapons mainly against swords, we tend to think anything it not as intense.

  • I agree whole heartedly, defense has never been about fighting. If you leave yourself vulnerable such as with hair that can be grabbed, a neck tie etc, are you not at a disadvantage? Maybe I don;t know anything, Ive only trained since 1964, alot of it in the Orient.

  • @donoberloh Oh, I know, I'll stay in my house and behind the couch!

The Samurai had to cut their hair when their class was outlawed. Native Americans had to cut their hair when kidnapped into residential schools. All teh Nazis were skin heads. The mongols never had to cut their war hair...

'64 eh? Beats me out. But hey, aren't you at a disadvantage for getting old? You should have put an end to that.

  • A Campbell Cane could be an interesting senior defense device. I was asked last year about designing a cane that could be functional, artistic and defensive. The latest design fits this description. I was involved in martial arts in the 60's..now I am way over 60. I would not want to be on the other end.

  • use a blackthorn stick its way better its what i use it beats a cane hands down trust me

  • This is good stuff but it would be better if you did it the Tai Chi way. Cane Fu= Good self defense!

  • Here's a shot in the dark but I'll just throw it out anyway...

Doesn't that 4-foot long ponytail hanging from the back of his head make it incredibly easy for almost anyone to grab and take his head down to the ground???

It would seem that if his goal were practical self-defense that his hairstyle would immediately betray him at the beginning of any confrontation.

Maybe his first self-defense weapon of choice should be a pair of scissors.

  • dunno, this isn't really a competitive martial art, and from experience I've found that random muggers generally leg it if their quarry puts up more fight than a quick buck is worth.

  • ontologicalchemist

"this isn't really a competitive martial art"

I'm not talking about martial arts competition, just practical defense in the street. That long ponytail makes it possible for him to lose before he can even use his cane for defense.

Years ago I worked as a bouncer & I had no weapons so I had to use any advantage I could get. When I came up against a guy with really long hair I found I easily grab it & take a guy right to the ground & hold him there as long as I wanted to.

  • that's until he chokes you with it!

  • QuietRain

Or maybe he'll get choked to death with his own hair. I agree with Neil that it's stupid to teach self defense while leaving oneself so vulnerable in a fight with hair that long.

  • @TagerFu Come on by...the mongols wore their heair up until they went into battle, then let it down as a sign of contempt for the enemy and as a challenge. I'm public, right here...

  • Scissors aren't necessary!

Though it is quite a target, If someone has trained for several years, perhaps decades with long hair, they'll know how to protect themselves from hair attacks. It just comes with training.

  • @CaneFu Do you ever wear a jacket. stick out a hand or ever carry a kid? You got a lot of handles just standing there, caneFU. Sign yourself cane and don't think that the cane is a handle???

  • @CaneFu Hey - I did have a life before I got old and I learned a little bit but this stuff is for seniors, not bad asses like you. And, as for me, who's gonnah grab my hair? I'm in my 60s - who's going to boast about beating me up? And what if they lost? Shit, I make my sd suit my life, I don't go changing my life to suit some other fella's idea of perfect sd.

Don't forget to ask how someone as stupid as me has survived 30 yrs MA, twice as long as you, (a guess from your tone).

    Fun yet?

  • @DefendYourself101

Hey, I really didn't mean to come on so strong - sorry, just he street coming out in me I guess and I apologize. Whatever makes you happy.

  • @Neil6000 I don't fight for a living anymore...I just hang the way I want an teach others. I've never taught anyone to grow their hair. I'm 64 with 35 yrs in, doin ok except for a bit of knee problems but hey - no one's grabbed it yet cause I DON"T FIGHT NO MORE!

    Sheesh... :)

  • @Neil6000

I know people with hair like that who could snap your neck before you even saw that ponytail!

If you are good at self defence you attire and hairstyle don't matter, If you change your hairstyle, clothing and gear (eg. carry weapons exclusively for fighting as opposed to a walking stick for walking andalso POSSIBLY for defence) to your advantage in combat, you are probably a professional warrior (army, bodyguard...) or just paranoid... imho...

  • when I get to be his age I am going to have some fun beating down some young strong healthy puppies

  • I trust Ted Truscott
