You weren't even alive in '83 during those El Nino years - ask Vince Collier, Anthony Ruffo or Richard Schmidt about it if you're not convinced. Ifyou need to know what a 20' wave looks like, drive up to Pillar Point - that is once you get a drivers license. But since the waves there have no backs and you measure by Hawaiian standards - you will probably call them six feet, even when they are only towing.

On a NW swell like that I would have gone to Trestles....and driven right on by on my way to La Jolla (or up to the Indicator in PV). Church maybe, but Lowers doesn't work like it's supposed to on a winter swell. Plus the "I wanna be famous" crowd at that joint. Blech. Caught a nice double overhead bomb there about 5 years ago on a big south, waited on the outside for 30 mins, and never looked back. I love that wave, but commercialism has destroyed it, probably for good.
