Hi Mike, Sadly not. My folks will be in HK early March for a week with my youngest brother Simon, as it is the 50th Anniversary of my Dads Building the City Hall, so they have various media commitments re that, HK Television sent over a 3 man TV crew to interview him at his flat recently for a TV documentary on it, took 6 hours! Simon hasn't been back since 68. So big changes for him. Have a great time in March, Kevin.
I lived there from 1987 to 1996, age 8 to 17 - so Mt Nick is the place of my deepest childhood memories. After hearing it was going to be torn down, I made a pilgrimage with my brother, husband and baby in 2008. It was closed but we explained we used to live there, and the security guard was kind enough to let us in. You can see the photos my husband took at Flickr slash photos slash liamfitzpatrick - click on More Sets and "56 Mt Nicholson Gap." kevpix, thanks for sharing!
Much Love for this post...MT NICK CREW 1985 - 2002. the memories came flooding back, only thing missing from this is Ellie's bum, the tadpole pond and the Haystack...plus the hermits house, the dump and the back staircase!! Instead of filming the tourists at the end you should have merged a clip of us kumquatting / completely abusing the guards office!! So good. Thoughts and memories are with all the Family and Friends who passed through OUR valley over the decades, wherever you all may be.
I lived at mount nick as a kid for several years until 1976, this brings back more memories than i ever believed, my brothers and i played in the japanese war caves above the flats at blacks link, if anyone wants to share stories get in touch, MANY THANKS KEVPIC facebook mark rumbelow cyprus
Woah this is brings back crazy memories! we lived there in the 90s but also went to Bradbury on the 80s when we lived in Repulse Bay. Can't believe they are tearing it down!!! I guess that's the end of The Hut too! thanks for posting this dude!
Lucky you. I haven't been back to HK since 2004 nd Mt. nick since 1990. Have a good trip. Wonder what they have done to the place. I was at nursery in Mount Nick, then Bradbury, then boarding school (same time as we left Mt. Nick in 1990). KGV miles away though? was that when you were living somewhere else?
Wxcellent rip sent all over HK Kowloon and Macau. I lived at Mount Nick when I went to KGV... involved car pool to the Star Ferry, then Star Ferry to Kowloon then school bus to KGV, reverse at end of day except Number 15 bus from outside City Hall to Mount Nick then walk up the road to the flats! IE quite a trek.
I also lived at Mt Nik and went to KGV from there.Went to Peak school first, as moved into Mt Nick around 1962??? cant remember, but was still being finished when we moved in. I stayed till I left KGV IN 1974. My parents stayed on there for years afterwards, until retirement. FANTASTIC days for us as kids!!
I was on Blacks Link on the weekend, and saw that it has been completely demolished! Heart breaking! I found this link after googling to try to see what was going to go up? Mike Bentley
I remember you well, I was good friends with David, you were the Gregory Barnes, Mike Watson, group I guess. My brothers were Keith and Simon.
David and I hung out with Kirsty Bain, Diane Tonge, John Don, Mandy Cook, Andrew Filshie, ( I heard died in Sydney a few years ago now? ) and also Anthony Evans.
We left in 69, been back nearly every year since 92 on business, last 2010 in January.
Glad you enjoyed the video.. as you said great days - great shame.
Mike.. you may find these shots evocative too.. taken last year when the place was deserted and the police who were holding, innercity terrorism exercises let me inside to take pics of our old flat.. 1oth floor, no electricity too..just like during typhoons..
I lived here from 1981 to 1990, from the age of 1 to 9. Despite living in Hong Kong until 2004, I never visited it again. This video fucked with my head! I was on the 10th floor of the second block as you come in. What year was this shot?
2004.. we also lived on the 10th floor, but first block, and the ground floor with garden in the second floor, also the top bungalows before the blocks were built and even before that in the bungaows which step down in front of the front blocks!
where the four blocks were ie.. two front and two back, used to be about 4 - 6 rows of bungalows which were torn down early 60s to build the tower blocks
Man. So you lived there in the sixties. That goes back. What years were you there in all? Did you go back in 2004 just to check it out or did you do two or more stints of living there? or were you some sort of long term presence throughout multiple decades??? I guess before those blocks were built the bungalows must have been a super privileged residence, with all those gardens etc...?
lived in HK from 1955 to 1969, but I regularly, almost yearly, go back on assignment as a Photographer, as it happens I am leaving tonight for the week in HK! So watch this space for updated shots on Mount Nick as it has been closeddown for demolition.
went to nursery school thru kindergarden and junior school then KGV before being sent back to boarding school, our playground was repulse bay, the LRC and the hills behind mount nick, very privilaeged upbringing as you know yourself
Unbelievable! Kevin you just brought 40 years back to me. We lived at Mt Nicholson 1964 to 1968 and walked that long road after school five days a week and then again at weekends. You even managed to get the back hills, the caves, the car park, the bungalows and the gardens. Wonderful. I will save this and treasure it forever.
