Paul Lovens must be experienced live! Most video and audio recordings on which he participates don´t show his unique and accomplished style to its best advantage. The recommendable "Regalia"-Record (Free Music Productions) performed by Cecil Taylor and him, by the way, is an exceptional case!

You're absolutely right. As I experienced you can say this about many "free jazz" drummers. When listened to at a live concert musicians like Paal Nilssen-Love, Tony Buck, Michael Zerang sound different and even better.

And yes, Regalia is a great record, possibly my favourite recording of both Lovens and Taylor, despite them having so much great stuff out.
