  • I worked my butt off to pay off an inexpensive house in my earlier 20s and develop a skilll so i could work two hours a day from home so that i could put this theory to the test with guitar .....now my hours werent as big as they currenntly are, but you have to gradually increase your time as you go i believe...none the less, as it stands ...i practice 15 hours a day and i go 4 weeks at a time with a three day break for R and R at the end of each cycle . Its been 11 months.

  • wtf?!

  • I know you did this initial video a long time ago, but I was just doing research on the 10,000 theory and am going to enact this self-pact to strive for that. I hope you are doing well on your journey!!!! (My hours are going to the double bass)

  • I watch youtube for 2hrs a day... 700hrs a per year..

  • @leontd In 14 years' time, you will be a genius at watching YouTube. Not sure whether there's a career in it, though...

  • Jimi Hendrix practised his guitar more than you can possibly imagine, I recommend charting out the hours on a weekly basis rather than a daily basis, you have 15 hours a week working out to be about 750 hours a year, and 20 hours a week working out to 1000 hours a year.

  • I dunno if the 10,000 hours works for every field of creativity, take writing for instance I've heard professional writers at the top of their game admit that they don't write as often as they would like to. I think 10,000 hours of creative and constructive thinking can amount to the result you wish for.

  • I think it's ridiculous to think that people dont have different learning speeds, that different learning methods arent more effective than others, and that people dont think in different ways that support their learning even in non active learning sessions, time is not everything.

  • I've started to log my hours and see if I can duplicate what the author maintains! I can practice at least 3 hours per day and most days - 5 hours!!

  • Michael De La Maza calculated that most chess players only need 2500 hours to reach the expert level in chess. Of course most of this time is spent studying combinations.

His figures pointed out that to be a grandmaster he would need at least 10,000 hours!! Same number that the book the "Outliners" stated one needs to be a top performer.

  • Jimi Hendrix is a perfect example. Was he great because he practiced scales a lot? No. In fact, he wasn't even that skilled a player technically compared to many classical and jazz guitarists. He was great because he had a supreme musical imagination. You don't acquire that by practicing for even a million hours. Moving your fingers well is just a gesture. Great music is something else.

  • I agree there is a difference between being competent at something and being exceptional. I don't think 10,000 hours of basketball practice will make me the next Michael Jordan. But I disagree that Jimi Hendrix didn't practice much. Maybe he didn't practice scales or classical/jazz techniques but he practised his own style. I've read he practised an insane amount.

Are you saying that someone who is great doesn't even need to practise? Or no one should practise a lot since they can't be Jimi?

  • @reggieband There is a difference between talent and skill and while Jimi Hendrix had alot of talent, he would have been no where on the guitar without skill and skill only comes with practice. He may not have practiced 10,000 hours, and I would never be as amazing on the guitar as he was even if I practiced that much, but practice is definitely going to distinguish the serious players from the weekend warriors.

  • @BrokenAero1 No, Hendrix didn't practice scales. If he had, he would be Yngwie Malmsteen. Instead he practiced creative playing, plus uncountable hours playing other people's songs on the Chitlin circuit. This made him creative and able to write all those amzing songs. IMHO you have to practice what you want to achieve. So practicing scales for 10.000 hours won't make you a Hendrix. But imagine what practicing your musical *imagination* for 10.000 hours would accomplish ...

  • @BrokenAero1 Jimi Hendrix practised almost every waking hour since he was 9...

  • @BrokenAero1 LOL Jimi Hendrix was never without his guitar!

  • This is nonsense. 10,000 hours of practice may or may not make someone a skilled player but it doesn't account for greatness. Was Beethoven the composer he was because he put in 10,000 hours? Was Van Gogh the painter he was because he painted for 10,000 hours? No. This is bs meant to drive the you-too-can-be-a-genius book industry that's so lucrative today. No question long hours of practice will improve your skills. Greatness and talent are something else.

  • @BrokenAero1 it doesn't claim to account for greatness. Its just an average amount deliberate practice time to become an "expert" Was Van Gogh the painter he was because he painted every now and then? doubt it.

  • History proves you wrong on all points you mentioned!

Also note that no one stated that you would be great only that you would be in the top percentage of those in your particular field!

  • didnt beethoven had musical family who taught him music since he was basically a baby? he made his first symphony at 11, unless thats mozart, which would be around the 10000 theory

  • I've played about 5,000 hours worth after 7 years of practice. The second half should be easier because you actually gain momentum as your knowlege and skill grows.

  • I'm doing this too. You should search for "practice guitar 10,000 hours" on Google, and you will come across the goal on 43Things that I (CreativeHeart) started. I document all my progress there. I'd recommend anyone else interested in this goal to do the same.

  • have you seen the youtuber the10kproject? He is doing this with guitar as well.

  • Very interesting ideas. Thank you for taking the time. I have been hang gliding for 32 years and estimate that I have 2K hours airtime. I may not live long enough to reach 10K hours of flying to become Master, but I will reach that goal with guitar in time. I think quality practice will count for more than just noodling around. Having a record of your progress is a good idea. The Internet may change the human experience! Kurt

  • 13 views? That's a bit of an unfair share of exposure, I think. Good luck, anyways. I might pop back and see how you progress.

  • Haha! I am a little shy for exposure at the moment since my playing isn't very good yet! No use me going and publicising this until I can demonstrate some progress.

I hope you do check back sometime!
