  • In the religion of Zoroaster, the sun is considered the revealer of all things and nourisher of the universe. This is followed by an astrological rationale for having selected the sun in the house of Leo as the emblem of the august state of Persia. The decree then claims that use of Order of the Lion and Sun had existed in pre-Islamic Zoroastrian Iran until the worship of the sun was abolished by Muslims.

  • Shiro Khorshid was then based on Jamshid (mythical founder of the ancient Persian kingdom), and Ali (Shi'te first Imam). Jamshid was affiliated with the Zoroastrian sun and Ali was affiliated with the lion and (Zul-faqar) sword.

  • The lion and sun motif has had "a unique success" among icons for signifying the modern Iranian identity, in that the symbol is influenced by all significant historical cultures of Iran and brings together Zoroastrian, Shi'a, Jewish, Turkic and Iranian symbolism.

For the Islamic revolution, the lion and sun symbol resembled the "oppressive Westernizing monarchy" that had to be replaced, despite the fact the symbol had old Shi'a meanings and the lion was associated with Ali.

  • This man's interpretation of "shir o khorshid" as far as relating it to Ali and his sword is wrong.
