The writing credit on the album says Don Nix wrote the song and Wiki says Leon Russell wrote it with a mention of Don Nix. I'm going with the credit on the Beck album until I get a clarification. The Freddie King version from 1971 is awesome!
I remember when my friend and I used to trip all the time one summer. We would play one song after another, finding one to top the previous one. This would always be the last song we played. After hearing this song,we'd have to cool our jets for awhile because we couldn't think of another song to top this one!
BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW THIS SONG WAS FIRST INTRODUCED TO THE WORLD AS A LITTLE FLOPPY VINYL 32RPM RECORD STUFFED AS A PROMO RECORD IN LEON RUSSELL'S "SHELTER PEOPLE" ALBUM (Leon's album that had "Stranger in a Strange Land" and Alcatraz") Had the album!
@JustAintthatWay kinda hard to argue with that,,,saw em, duh, I dont know, sometime in either 69`, 70` or 71` but definitely remember em playin this & it`s been playin in my head off & on ever since,,, never gets old
This tune like everyone else is saying was the bomb. Rock music was flowing and through my bedroom windows everyone in the neighborhood heard it. great post
You're welcome. For a real treat look over in the related vids section over to the right and click in "Going Down" with the pic of Max and the blue screen background. A mind blower!
@chasfin what can I say- well how bout "HELL YEAH!!! " bad 2 da bone!!! the ultimate rock song! killer diller in every way! freakin groove, dude, only wish Rod Stewart hadda screamed on it!
To prove how universal music is, I heard this album for 1st time in a record store in Tehran, Iran. Store manager was kind enough to play me a few tracks to get me hooked....and hooked I was. This album still remain one of my all time favorites.
@rickyon make it two sets.... funny story me and a freind heard this in 1991 for the first time on the radio we had to call his mom so we could figure out who it was. from a payphone no less. fantastic. few songs have all instruments jammin love love love this
I've heard countless versions of this song over the years, and this one is still THE BEST. If I live another 40 years, I'll still be listening to this song. The piano part is so jamming! Music today just sucks compared to this. Thank God we still have these old recordings!
One year a LONG time ago when I was 22 and it was Thanksgiving. I had one of those Familial falling outs and I was terribly irritated, SO I put this on in my tiny one bedroom apt. on the 1st floor of a 3 story bldg. REAL LOUD. The only turkey I had that day was Wild Turkey, and I gave EVERYBODY the bird and acted like an asshole. Then, the cops came and got me for pissin' off the neighbors. A most memorable Thanksgiving. But Jeff Beck is a monster and we love him don't we?
You're welcome. I wore out the vinyl copy and bought the cassette, which I promptly wore out and then bought the CD. This is one of the best all time jam songs when a bunch of musicians get together. Everybody knows it and it offers so much room for soloing and improvisation!
Those musicians are the BEST ! the alternaing is done in unison like never before , the balance is the best and yet it keeps on moving . One of the BEST I've ever heard . Jeff Beck is a great guitarist , as are the other musicians on this album. That song is like an illustration , that I know.
That is one of the best engineered songs ever recorded , the balance is perect , the timing of alternating the tracks is perfect , it sounds as if its " woven " , seperation cannot be any better . The keyboards are Excellent , the bass is crystal clear and EXCELLENT , the vocals are EXCELLENT , rhythm is perfect . Whoever engineered that track is one talented person . It has the " compositopn " of a painting or great illustration . PERFECT ! ,
I agree! First it helps to have such incredible musicians. The album was Produced by Steve Cropper (Booker T. and the MG's, Blues Brothers amongst many) and Engineered by Ronnie Capone. Don't know if he's from the famous Capone family but maybe that explains why it's perfect. Don Nix who wrote the song congratulated Beck on such an incredible job soon after it was released.
I think it's a close rendition of the original by Don Nix. The piano part at the beginning of his version (which was written only a year earlier) sounds very similar to the part played by "Mad Max". His version may have been influenced by Gerschwin? The bass player couldn't have been 16 because he played on an album 3 years earlier and I doubt that he was recording at 13!
I'm probably the only 17 year old who knows this song and loves it. Cozy Powell is one of the greatest drummers ever, and obviously Jeff Beck is a guitar god.
You my friend are a young man of unique intelligence with an impeccable taste in music! Stick with the 60's, 70's and 80's in music and you can't go wrong!
Sadly Bob agewise I have to say yes. Musicwise theirs nothing sad about it, these were the golden years of rock and we lived it! Must have been a bitchin' system and this would have been a good song to use to set up with. Remember when Pink Floyd played with a quad setup in the arenas on that one tour?
First comment here says I am the balls! I wore out the vinyl on this record back in the seventies, and I am glad other people can wear out their keyboards, now that Rickyon has seen fit to post it here on YouTube! Thanks bro'...............
As great as Jeff Beck's version is you should have heard Freddie King do this.
Of course, you know that this was written by Freddie and as good of a job as Bob Tench is doing it is just an imitation of what Freddie sang.
Max Middleton's piano is awesome, but check out Freddie's version.
If you grew up in Dallas playing GTR like I did back in the late '60s / '70s this was all standard, but "must play" stuff.
