My 91/30 requires a slap going down on some rounds and others it just goes right down no problem im using surplus bulgarian ammo. It never needs a slap when using brown bear ammo. Could the surplus ammo be to blame?
get OKIE gauges. you don't need to remove the extractor to use them. they come in handy at a gun show or a sporting goods store cuz it only takes a few seconds to pop em in and check headspace. under 60 bucks for all 3 gauges
so lets say i just want to check if my rifle is safe to fire and wont blow up in my face, will a field gauge be enough? any help would be appreciated.
Having trouble cleaning my mosins barrel. The lands are dark and I have tried to clean it but I cant seem to get it cleaned out. Is there a way to get it clean? Or is it just a dark bore?
@Tillered Try shooting about 20 rounds and follow up with a good cleaning while it is still warm. Use Hoppes #9 and follow up with JB bore bright polish.
I just got a 1943 91/30 from a gun show yesterday, and the thing requires a good slap to close on a bullet(kinda like the one you would like to give to Hillary Clinton). It has all matching numbers, even the buttplate. I cleaned the cosmo out, but I cannot get a 12 ga. brush to the chamber yet. What do you reccomend?
thanks for the schooling i appreciate all your hard work and i also love the mosin anything built buy a craftsman not plastic at least if mine get burned up they will still protect me i like wood and metal im old skool thanks man
You can experiment with different bolt heads to see if they will headspace, but as far as setting the barrel back a few threads, I am not sure if it is possible on the Mosin.
I know with Enfield rifles, the bolt head is changed as headspace conditions change.
If the rifle fails to headspace, you'll likely need to try a different bolt head. Unfortunately, the only way to really tell is to randomly try different ones.
Enfield rifles are a good example. They will have either a "0, 1, 2, 3, etc" numbered bolt head. The number correspondes to headspace. 0 is a newer barrel and the higher the number, the more worn the barrel.
You gotta love the mosin. My shop has a 32 tula hex I'm gonna go pick up after the first of the year if they still got it. Right now I'm catching up on getting my reloading components stocked up and getting dies for the rest of my surplus guns. I think after that 32 tula hex, I'm gonna grab a turkish mauser and a yugo M48. I don't have any 8mm's. Great vid!
Sure thing man...More to come. I am serious about upgrading camera equipment. This was made with (Movie Maker) and I just have too many videos to not post them while I wait. I have a few more to put up tonight

I am wondering what type pf wheel you used to polish that extractor?
krazycheetah13 7 months ago
are extractors interchangable? and if so is a head space check recommended after changing the extractor?

Iraqvet...
I can't get my extractor at all. It's like frozen in there or over sized and jammed.
I'm taking it to the range soon. I don't want to buy a gauge or get it checked. Due to the fact I'm far from the city.
But my mosin is in mint condition all matching numbers and arsenal stamps.
I have a '44 izzy.
I also live in Texas.
Thanks.

very helpful, any idea where to get the field gage?
cutlerylover 2 years ago
You can buy them from big suppliers like Brownell's, Midway USA, Graf and Sons, etc.
Expect to pay around $20-25 per gauge. The field gauge will usually suffice, but if you can afford it, go ahead and pick up the no go gauge as well.
Later Jeff...Thanks for watching.

couple questions: where did you get your headspace guages? what kind of grinder/polishing wheel do you use? thanks for the awesome vids.
slaughtor1 2 years ago
The gauges are availble for online retailers like Midway USA and Graf and Sons. They are made by Forster.
The wire wheel is a medium, and the buffing wheel is just a standard medium wieght polishing wheel. Both can be had a Home Depot pretty cheap.

What do you do with the rifle fails the Headspace taste? new bolt? or new rifle?
