  • what a great cover. Fairly faithful to the original too. I've added it to my FB group dedicated to cover versions. It's called "The Guilty Pleasure of the Cover Version"

  • Love this cover. Haunting, serene, beautiful.

  • wrong tempo for the Spanish flavor of the song...the American Southwest..Hispanic feel the song is designed to evoke...I love this girl but this SUCKS

  • Does this audio track pre date he raising sand era???

  • @karac833 This is from a 2004 album by Viktor. So yes.

  • Didn't like the vocals but the rest was good.

  • its ok..but i dont think ive ever heard a song done "better" that was originally done by the led Zeppelin or Robert Plant..ever!..although one comes very close to actually(in my opinion) being better and thats the 4non blondes version of misty mountain hop..they just tear that jam up and its great!!

  • I didn't Luke it. Sorry.

  • Awesome!

  • I really like that you put the Krauss version over the original video. It is an interesting way to look at someone else's version of a song. I would like to see more layovers like this. Robert Plant certainly proves to us that new or different interpretations to others' songs are valuable artworks and homages to the originals.

  • The music is too slow it just sounds annoying for real.....

  • Alison is such a great singer. I love this song. Everytime I hear it it reminds me of a road trip through the Southern Appalachians with a raven haired beauty in a new TransAm back in Sept.'83. when Big Log was on every rock station. Alison would have looked good riding with me on that trip too.

  • Not a bad version at all, doesn't compare to the original, but a great homage, Ms. Alison's voice is like an angel.

  • really great version...really mellow and haunting....love it

  • Ohhh!!!!! I LOVE THIS VERSION!!!! It's different but beautiful..She has a haunting voice. Heavenly, sultry..Good job. So who is Alison & Victor Krauss?

  • @panamarasta Glad you like it but are you joking or is that a serious question? If you want to know who Alison Krauss is. look her up on wikipedia, if you want to know more about her work, my channel is mainly Alison Krauss. Even have an Alison Krauss playlist up there. If you like this you really ought to check her out and discover one of the most awesome musicians around! :)

  • Viktor is her brother. Not as famous but an excellent musician who has written for movies and solo albums and is and has been the bass player in Lyle Lovett's band for many years now.

  • I think this is cool...I didn't know Alison did this song. YouTube is such a great site...best on the internet.

  • Don't like this version, but if anything, I now know what the lyrics are, 27 years later.

  • This is a terrible version of a flawless, moody and beautiful song. Just dose not work. The mix is off as well. The vocals are to separated from the music.

  • @beauty8116 "the mix is off"? "Too separated from the music"? By what standard? Yours I presume? That doesn't mean the mix is "off" dear. It means YOU don't like the mix.

  • @beauty8116 Actually i was the audio engineer on this track and i totally suck. You on the other hand are brilliant in every way shape and form, I agree with your post about this song and anything your ever post for the rest of your life! Thank you for being you! PS, You are loved.

  • @beauty8116 Cute dude, guess you couldn't find the words to explain your original comment so decided to go with the "sarcasm"!

But you ARE right ..I am brilliant in every way , shape and form and easily outshine your dim commentary! And I am sure, in spite of it all, you are being loved too doll! :)

  • I am a huge fan of Alison's but I must say...this song is just not quite right with her delicate voice. Of course it might have to do with it being such a recognizable Robert Plant song. His voice just really moves with the beat on it better.

  • I like it. About the video, I couldn't help but think it was a missed opportunity to do a fairly, granted cliched, road movie video, much more so than he did - concentrate more on cruising through amazing landscapes. But then I suppose that's too predictable.

  • this is kinda wierd , the original cant be messed with , it's perfect as it is

  • nice.

  • There's a fine live version of Robert Plant's original, recently posted.

  • Nothing is good as the original version that appeared on the Principle of Moments. That version of the song was flawless. This song doesn't sound as good live either because there isn't the right sound or equipment or whatever that can be recreated in a live situation to make the guitar sound as good as on record.

  • @5177845 Ah well, in that case folks better stop recording this song ever again and especially never try to attempt to play it live.

And so happens best recording ever of Beethoven is by the Berliner under von Karajan. Might as well start spreading the news folks can stop playing that too.

And I am sure lots of people can give more examples.

  • Bill Frisell on guitar not Jerry Douglas

  • Fine version but the 80's version is just as good if not better. This is stuck in that allison krauss, cowboy junkies, mood sound genre as much as the original is stuck in the "80's", sound production. Loved it then, love it now.

  • goed gedaan hoor!!!

  • You've got to be kidding. Victor, stick to playing bass for the mediocre Lyle. This is horrifying. Whoever is playing electric guitar on this should be ashamed of himself... sell your guitar today... you never know, some 17 year old kid may pick it up and do something meaningful. PLEASE, you below average Nashville players, STOP IT!!!

  • Well, it's an opinion I guess! Even if does come from a "dummy" account! ;D

  • jerry douglas the jimi hendrix of dobro guitar plays in this track, probably the best guitarist of his time, something jimmy page was not. btw nashville has produced some of the best musicians in the industry that have influenced everyone from hendrix to page.

  • @TexasLia Nashville influenced Hendrix? Where did you get that from? I love when people assume that their favourite music influenced other's favourite artists. Hendrix had never mentioned influences coming from Nashville. He lived in Nashville because at the time they had a thriving black music scene involving funk, soul and R&B. I'm not saying he didn't pick things up from people living there, but be careful where credit is given. It's not always deserved.

    Love,

    A music fan.

  • hm i think noone can sing beter this song then Plant ( sry for bad english )

  • very bad english and very bad taste

  • Truly hypnotic!!!

  • I've always felt this is a great song marred by its exceedingly '80s' production - so I'm thrilled at this version. If only Robert Plant were singing it!

  • @alexandrialeaving ~ I kind of agree, something about the guitar work just isn't there for me though. I think I prefer the original, but this is still a phenomenal rendition

  • Such a beautiful and melancholy rendition. When was this Krauss/Krauss version recorded? Anyone know?

  • This comes from Viktor's 2004 album "Far from enough"!

  • oh man what floor does this elevator stop at?

  • what can I say but absolutely staggered RP's 80's classic has been given a new interpretation. Flawlessly done too.

  • I love this song....always have! And I'm a big Allison Krauss fan. Could not believe it when I heard they'd collaberated on an album.

Fantastic! I agree, it just wouldn't be right if they just replayed the original score with Allison's voice.

  • Damn! Damn! Damn! Damn! Amazing! Kind of a Cowboy Junkie feel. Amazing!

  • "and it's fuel is the years,,,"

  • ???

  • Fuckin good, no shit.

  • this song fits Knopfler like a glove

  • I think it would sound extremely similar to this or the original so other than you guys clearly wanting to hear more Mark Knopler, I really think it would be musically boring to make another similar version!

  • Do you know what's missing? .....that great guitar interlude.....this person does not compare to that (whoever's playing it)

  • Not sure of this particular song but these are the musicians playing on the album this comes from:

Viktor Krauss - bass, electric guitar, vocals

    Jerry Douglas - slide guitars

Bill Frisell - electric and acoustic guitars

    Steve Jordan - drums

    Alison Krauss - vocals, viola

So excuse me when I laugh at your assessment! :D

  • This is HORRIBLE! Why would someone want to trash such a great song!

  • I think Mark knopfler should do a version of this song.

suits him fine, don't you think?

  • Don't you think that would be redundant?

  • I'm thinking MK could put this song back in the top 40 if he wanted to. His finger-picking style would kick this song up a notch or two.

  • Just came back to this reddragon. I forgot about it. Just great. I hope the work on the RP AK new music is on track... Cheers!

  • So do I but latest news is Dan Tyminski saying they ( AKUS) are preparing to start recording this summer so it is anybodies guess what will happen next.

Either is fine with me to be honest!

RPAK or AKUS.....IMO 90% chance it will be brilliant stuff ! :)

  • Agreed!

  • Incredible voice and music is absolutly beautiful!

  • Seeing from who this comes...I am not impressed! ;D

  • I prefer the original because I like the atmosphere that goes along with the song better. This version is much more melancholy, but it's absolutely beautiful. What I wouldn't give for her voice...

  • excellent version and great job synching vid!

  • Exquisite!

  • robert plant has an amazing body of solo work....i am glad he hooked up with allison..she will be reborn

  • Love this version! originals better tough.

  • Thank you for posting this! I was obsessed with this album in the early 80's and now I am obsessed with Alison Krauss. She is a true artist.

  • one should expirience a needle in the back of the ear with suzan lucci

  • Excellent job! I saw Robert with Allison last year and if they come back I will go again. I always loved this song from Plant and Allison does a great job on it1

  • ... ... ... -through a backwards glance at the candelabra called past, I come to accept the beauty of her voice. Recently I saw Robert Plant and Allison Krauss w/T-Bone Burnett. I very much choose and want to continue my enjoyment of this song.5-9-9.

  • This is a very good song. Allison Krauss sent me back a bit though. Whenever I hear a remake of anysong, it takes a while. When Robert Plant introduced Robbie Blount, I didn't like him. However the random mellowing provided, ( over some of the years) a second listening. Now, with mellowing, and the right drugs, I abjure to attain his melodic style. For a very long time I had the different styles of a number of guitarists to myself,(not Jimmy Though).

    ... ... ... ... ...

  • Wolfron.

If you want to criticize Alison on my channel, you need to first get informed on her career! At least spell her name right.

And take the trouble to start your sentences with a capital letter and end them in the appropriate fashion too!

  • give me back the original big log video's

  • Hey! I'd love to but they get taken off because of copyrights! Try Dailymotion!

  • I think from the comments that a lot of you don't realize that Viktor is Alison's brother. He is also the bassist for Lyle Lovett. Not trying to sound like a know-it-all, just thought it would be interesting to some of you.

  • Very well done.

I noticed you slowed the song down a little, but that makes it so much more special. The womans voice is allright.

    You have this on mp3??

  • No, I didn't slow it down. Guess Viktor Krauss did. ;D Because yes I have it as mp3 and this is how it came. :)

Glad you think this woman's voice is alright! 26 Grammies goes to people seeming to agree on that!

  • Pure music...

It has such an authentic sound.. it gives me the feeling that I'm somewhere in the middle of nowhere, sitting in an almost empty pub and listening to an improvisation from some local unknown MASTER musicians...

    Hear those voices at 3:44..

    Just beautiful...

  • One of my fav's by Plant but boy Ms. Kraus does do it justice, very soft and her voice goes perfect with all of it......she done Plant proud im sure.

  • From my point of view the one thing that puts this remake in to a class of its own(apart from Alison Krauss' superb voice)are the subtle, haunting violin phrases which replace the incessant metronome ticking that seemed so perfectly to capture the passage of time and distance in the original. The violin in this version adds a different perspective, it really does put emphasis on the notion of distance and longing.

  • Alison's voice lends an interesting aspect to the song, but what really catches my attention is the Bass playing somewhat parallel and then complimentary to the guitar. What a fantastic EQ on the Bass. WONDERFUL! Great cover!

  • That would be Viktor Krauss on the bass!

  • Her voice is really quite something

  • I luv it....I adore the way u did it with the video...superb...

  • That is superb,

  • damn i though it was the oringinal

  • sublime......sublime.......sublime

thank you so much for putting this up.

    it is so hypnotic.......sublime.....)

  • Hey look, Captain Kangaroo at 2:15 !

  • Tried to upload the original just now but got refused. Copyrights issue! Sorry I couldn't help you guys who prefer the original out there! :(

  • youtube sucks this is a classic. you mean you cannot watch the original version?

  • I think your main beef is with the copyright owners! ;D But I agree. I think it sucks too. I made this vid because I enjoyed comparing the two and that effect is sort of gone with the original not being there! And I like both versions equally myself so yeah, it sucks that the original can't be posted anymore but PSSST you CAN find it on Dailymotion! ;D

  • Nice job. Great version.

  • Thanks though it is of course no doing of mine really. Wish I knew who the director of the vid was! Anybody???

  • Thank you very much! Liked it!!

  • There is no turning back No There is no turning back On the run My love is in league With the freeway Oh with the freeway And the coming of the night time My love My love Is in league with the freeway
  • It's a good thing I am a cynic. :D I am afraid you made a few mistakes there but I finally found the correct lyrics thanks to Robert's fansite "Manic Nirvana town hall" and have posted them in the info! Cheers to HiBob for helping me out! :)

  • Leading me on (leading me on) Leading me down the road Driving me on (driving me on) Driving me down the road My love is exceeding a limit Red eyed and fevered with the hum of the miles Distance and longing, my thoughts do collide Should I rest for a while or decide? Your love is cradled in knowing Eyes in the mirror still expecting they'll come Sensing too well when the journey is done
  • Post this in the info:

(wrote it mahself so its all correct)

My love is in league with the freeway

It's passion will ride as the cities fly by

And the tail lights dissolve in the coming of night

And the questions and thousands take flight

My love is miles in awaiting

The eyes that just stare and the glance at the clock

In the secret that burns,in the pain that won't stop

And it's fueled is the years

  • well if all of you think you can do it better post it!! what?? NO BALLS LMAO great Job

  • Ooops, just realized you might not have been referring to the discussion on the lyrics! Apologies in that case! :(

  • any lyrics ANYWERE???

  • How's about typing "big log lyrics" in Google search? You will get about 1.9 million hits! ;)

  • :P fine then. Be clever. Nah seriously though thanks but they all have at least 5 words wrong and it's the ones I can't quite determin... And I've got to sing it for next week :D joy!!

    Really love this song!!

  • Well, if you can't determine them how do you know they have them wrong? 1.9 million times?( just to continue being clever ;D )

Anyway, why don't you say which words you can't determine and maybe someone seeing this can clear this up for you?

  • okay, hope this will help you( it's what AK seems to be singing and she is known to very much respect the writer of a song and be particular about these things :) )

Line 7: Pain that wont stop -and it fuels the years

    Line 10: Driving me on.

    Line 11: exceeding the limit

    Line 13: thoughts do collide

Those are the differences I hear. You could also try asking at a Robert Plant fan site. Someone there could most likely check the album booklet. Try "Manic Nirvana Town Hall"!

  • 1st of all i knew they were wrong because "a woman" does not sound anything like what i now know (thanks to you:P) is "the limit"...its like difrnt sounds..

    2nd dont be clever :D

and of course... thanks a lot!!

  • You're welcome! Good luck with the performance! :)

  • I'd love to drive all of Route 66 with Alison riding shotgun.

  • Good thinking! Should be on a Harley though! :)

  • Good, but not as good as Robert Plant's version.

  • Don't like it...It's very boring. The original version was far better.

  • Okey Robert Gratulations Grammy . Mirek Thank you Pozdrawiam POLAND

  • This is very good. I never knew this version existed.

  • this is cool. they are recording in town now

  • Who is recording? Alison and Robert?

  • Yes. and T Bone! I for one can't wait to hear a second album from the three of them! :)

  • Good job. I saw them this last summer when they toured together supporting their Raising sand cd. If they come back go see Plant and Krauss, very good. I like this version too.

  • Thanks! And trust me, I couldn't attend any of their concerts and I am still plenty bummed out over that! :( So if I ever can I surly will go and see them!

  • the Robert Plant version is the best, see the other version with Robert Plant

  • love to...but for some reason I cant find it with sound on here! shame..

  • Wow beautiful version I had never knew she had done this song love it thank you!

  • Big log GREAT SONG

  • LOVE IT

  • LOVE IT

  • Thanks, Tal! I love this song to pieces! It makes me think that they oughtta bring Viktor in on future RPAK ventures!

  • Thanks for easing my mind Stacy :)

  • Neat idea! I love both versions.. but of course, I'll have to go with Alison's/Vik's as being my number one. SilverQueen, the album is wonderful! I have had it for years and it never gets old to listen to.

  • Yeah I like both versions about equally but for me in the Robert Plant version the mood of the song always overshadowed the beautiful lyrics and it is only in Alison Krauss' version I really "heard" them

  • Hey, thanks for this! I'd never heard Alison's version before.

  • You're welcome! It's from Viktor Krauss' first album. Check it out on his site! Sounds pretty good, very laid back music!
