Over the years I have spoken with many opera buffs who heard the singers of Galli-curci's time. When asked who had the most beautiful voice from that era, the answer was almost invariably "Galli-curci." Galli-curci's singing, at its best, has an elan or dash that is absent in Melba's singing. Listen to them sing "Lo hear the gentle lark" back to back. Of course one must account for the difference in recording techniques. She set the standard for coloraturas and it has not been bettered.
There are certainly many who will not disagree! Galli-Curci is beyond doubt a very special artist. Many thanks, and all best for 2011! Cheers, etc. Doug --
Another voice/flute duet! Fun! I like her staccato notes (3:32-3:37)-- they are clipped and separate yet clear and full. The interaction between the voice and the flute from 3:49-end perfectly fits the "echo" theme of the song. Thank you for posting. :)
My favourite coloratura - this is indeed going straight to my favourites. Her voice brings me to tears every time - not big but so warm, clear, pure and perfectly even. The effortless way she gets these top notes... fantastic. Brava Amelita!
Apart from the English (which improved in Galli-Curci's later, electrical recordings), this performance reveals all the wonderful attributes of Galli-Curci's voice and singing mentioned by Bivolari. Thank you, Doug, for posting this gem.
Brava!!! Such grace and finesse. A winning smile, lovely tone, impeccable coloratura and a seamless legato. She was really one in a million. Let's not forget to thank Bishop for providing so many delightful songs.
