  • Was immer Barby hat...ich habe sie sehr gern und hatte es immer. Vermisse die alte Zeit, alle Geschwister zusammen...

  • This song reminds me of our traditional ones....Greetings from Romania!

  • lol... this song was once sung by the grade school chior during a 7th day adventist church service. adventists firmly believe that the only kind of dancing there is, is that done in devil worship, yes even ballroom, ballet and the rest. you should have seen the faces of the congregation. UTTER HORROR

  • Thank you for the post and thanks to Jennifer for sharing. To my favorites.

    Ahh, memories...

  • @nessy27 why do you say that here?

  • spitze klasse

  • spitze

  • Well sung by Jim. Good backing by the rest of the Dubs.

  • I'm pretty sure that Jesus didn't dance much......

  • @NorseWarriorKing Well, I would say the dancing part is probably an allusion to the teachings of Jesus Christ, being generally considered rather joyful and bright in contrast to many other creeds.

But that is just my take on it.

  • @EdinSumar Joyful and bright? And here I thought I was a Christian! What is this wonderful religion that you speak of?

  • @NorseWarriorKing Well, Christendom naturally, did you misunderstand something?

    I think you misunderstood something.

  • @NorseWarriorKing that depends whose preaching really

  • Jesus is the way. . .

Just kidding I'm an atheist, but I have survived 12 years of Catholic schooling so this song will forever be ingrained in my mind. It is actually a very pleasant little ditty. I enjoy it.

  • good song

  • unmöglich, ruhig sitzen zu bleiben, es zuckt in den Händen und Füssen

  • By far my favorite song. Perhaps it's my Irish heritage?

  • hoorah to my homeland

  • I haven't heard this since I was in 2nd or 3rd grade, so glad I remembered a part of the song or I never would have found it!

  • It's rare you come across a song that's so fun to listen to. Put's a smile on my face every time.

  • ireland God bless it

  • 0:45

Doesn't that guy look like Bam Margera's father?

  • Haha no, thats Jim Mccann.

  • Ha, I know. I'm just saying that it looks a bit like him.

  • @WhoWasThatFaggot Bam Margera's father?! Not Don Vito?! How dare you compare these Irish gents to that paedophile bastard - you know he was forced to stop being Don Vito for that conviction?!

  • @WhoWasThatFaggot

    I think you're right ;)

  • I really like that picture in the beginning:-)

  • Yes, good song!...Greetings!

  • i love ireland

  • good song to wake up to

  • It says right up there in the description "performed by Jim McCann". (Well, okay, I'm only assuming that that's correct. It probably is. I think. ^_^)

I see there are photos from the "Lord of the Dance" show in here too. Cute.

To Gowiiandpenguins about "best church song ever": Definitely one of the best. ^_^ But they should use *both* the faster tempo *and* the slower tempo in church...the dance tune would make a great church song too. ^_^ Unless the churches don't believe in dancing. ^_~

  • Whos singing it ? It isnt Ronny, is it ?

  • it is Jim McCann

  • Definitely not Ronnie

  • 1964...back of a coach in majorca..great irish lads black velvet band and all....wonderful ..fine girl u r.....wot is that from.....went to galway last year great but ..sorry had bit of hassle when stopped at great lonely pubs...??why? was only uk postie..now retired..want to go back

  • the holy ground... youtube the high kings the holy ground :)

  • epic song

  • lovely song...much respect to these legendary guys!!!!!

  • Lovely song !

  • :x:x:x:x

  • Yes it is.

The main Singer is Jim Mcann, he is the left guy in the second row on the first picture.

In the course you can hear the guy next to him and the guy behind them.

In fact, i beleive everyone but Ronnie Drew are a part of the song.

  • @rpgplayer101 You might be right - Ronnie's voice is much deeper than the rest. I definitely can't hear him!!

  • @NobleKorhedron You can just barely hear him, especially well in the chorus that starts at 1:32. There's a copy of "Hot Asphalt" that has a similar problem. In that song, I can only really hear him during the second chorus. He's got a deep voice, to be sure. Man sounded like a giant. Haha.

  • @irkofan he didn't only sound like a giant, he definitely was The Giant of Irish Music!!!

  • @JohnPreston0157 Oh yeh! Couldnae said it better meself!

  • It is.

  • anche da Roma, regina delle genti, onore ed amicizia

  • Lord of Joy and Pleasure Forever and this is but an Atom of the Iceberg...Ps 16:11

  • best hymn

  • I love this song, I'am from Germany

  • It's an eternal song! Respect from Ukraine.

  • I remember this from primary school, back in the days when you could sing Christian Hymns in primary schools..........

  • Tell me about....the bloody singing at the beginning was the best bit!!! PC gone far to far!!

  • Did you know this was a hymn? I didn't...

If they sang this at MY church, I would go way more often.

  • I was thinking "Simple Gifts" arranged by Aaron Copeland, in Appalachian Spring. So I had to look it up. - Original Song, written by a Shaker, Elder Joseph Brackett, in 1848, and was the basis for "Lord of the Dance" which was written by Sydney Carter in 1963, which is the one we must all remember from school. (No Thumbs Down please)

  • we just sang this song today at my churchhh.

  • best church song ever

  • Love this Tune , Thanks to my sweetheart of a friend for sending it ;)

  • I wish ronnie was cured of throat cancer, but he died on the 16 of august 2008 of it. We lost a good one, R.I.P. Ronnie Drew

  • he cant live forever.

  • So it goes.

He had a good run; made some great music.

To quote Braveheart: "Every man dies. Not every man truly lives."

  • I love this song.. never heard it sung with such a lilt. Very nice! :)

  • Jim's Still got a great voice at this time, pity we don't hear more of him

  • you do know why we don't hear more of him don'y you?? if not it's because he had terrible throat cancer he's cured now but his singing voice woz permenantly damaged

  • "They cut me down and I leapt up high

I am the Life that'll never, never die!

I'll live in you if you'll live in Me -

I am the Lord of the Dance, said He!"

AMEN and thank you LORD! Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. He will never leave you or forsake you. Put your life in His hands and you will truly live.

  • If only we sang it like this in Church.... I'd actually look forward to Sundays! Amazing music, very danceable.

  • The music is actually from a much older song titled 'Simple Gifts' from the mid-1800's, these lyrics were written about a hundred years afterwards.

  • Michael Flatley

  • i do like it! we don't sing it much at church tho

  • O.K. Now I get it. I first heard this tune played on a whistle in the opening of Michael Flatley's "Lord of the Dance". Didn't know it was a traditional tune. Thanks for this posting.

  • we sang this at church once, i love this song

  • ha what primary school did u go to

  • cuthies leavers mass 08!!!!

  • I looooooove this sonnnnng.. rediscovered it on Britain's Got Talent!! lalalalaaa

  • great song

    up the dubliners

  • Carefree wherever you may be!!!! hahahahaha!

    CFC!

  • Looking for ages for this song and the song south australia sung by barney I'd given up a while back, and now suddenly there are tons of dubliners songs up here, awesome song

  • who does the vocals in this one?

  • thanks for pointing that out but maybe calm down a little bit

  • i agree. danny need acupuncture.

  • ooookay then, thats kind of a spassy response.

  • Its Jimm McCann

  • The Dubs do several versions of this, one featuring 2 violins. I like this one, thankyou for posting.

By the way, Donovan did this on Cosmic Wheels back in the early seventies!

  • Love this song, It's older than the dance version (Michael Flatley, I played this also on the guitar.

  • Great song! Just found out it was only written in 1963 by a fella called Sydney Carter. I always thought it was sixteenth century!

  • same here it has that old european sound to it

  • Ein Song zum "durch-die-Bude-hüpfen"... wenn man besonders glücklich ist ;-)

  • best song ever

  • Love this song, sang it at camp!

  • Life can be so unfair - so much talent and so much tragedy to befall the group.

We will never see the likes of them again. Long may the remaining members continue.

  • this is an old uncle song.....in the pub...when we are all enjoying Dublin in the rare old times!

  • ahhhhhh......it's so daft....wish i could morris dance, then i might join them...IM NOT EVEN MALE

  • u dont need to be male luv to enjoy a good old dubliner..

  • where is this photo taken? In an Irish prison?

  • I don't know, could be.

  • Looks like Kilmainham Gaol, now a museum

  • Concur.

  • lol, i'm from Kilmainham, yes, that is Kilmainham Gaol, used in lots of movies too :)

  • clarenceoveur... i agree with you, i think it is kilmainham..

  • @rakovsky Kilmainham Jail where the British shot the leaders of the 1916 rising. Very historic place

  • how is the hardcore song that sampled this song? Please anyone tell me.

  • toured Ireland back in the mid 90's with 2 buddies from the Ile of Cape Breton, we partied for over a moth with these people and never had to worry about a place to stay; broke our hearts when we had to go back to Canada

  • The song is very funny i like it

  • Saw Jim at the Helix in Dublin on Friday. He didn't perform, (pity) just acted as host. Ronnie Drew also played along with Finbarr Furey. A memorable night!!

  • How did they look?

They both had cancer last I heared, and wheren't doing to well.

  • Ronnie drew looked very feeble but hasn't lost his sense of humour. As well as the cancer, he broke his hip recently and was using a walking stick. Jim McCann's voice is very bad and I don't think he can sing anymore. He can barely speak. He's very thin and sickly looking. Really sad to see, brought tears to my eyes.

  • Many people like this music when you have a party. But they can`t sing along.

There is nothing better when a pub plays good irish music and everybody sings aling and is drunk as hell

  • I'm a Dubliners Fan from Germany. All my friends can'T understand why I like this music so much. Only two or three of my friends likes this music, too. The rest says I'm crazy...

  • I have the same, I'm from the netherlands myself and all of my friends are like why the hell do u listen to that "old mans music".

  • I'm 14 and from the USA and I am a big fan of the Clancy Brothers and the Dubliners. My friends think I'm strange or something but this is way better than what they listen to (rap).

  • Don't know if this will ever be replied to. But it seems like Irish Folk music has a HUGE following in Germany. Why is that? I was just curious. I mean other than because it's good. haha

  • Same thin the me.

  • Yeah its from a higher bitrate conversion, I think that gives it the impression it goes faster.

By the way gaelicstorm, why is your account suspended if you dont mind me asking ?

  • copyright issues. long story. made a new account.

  • i already put this version up but this one seems faster awesome its one of my favorite songs

  • yeah irish folk is the best and the dubliners are the best

  • fyi lord of the dance isnt actually Irish in origin

  • Isn't it a transliteration of the New Testament? thought Id read something like that

  • It is an adaptation of the Shaker tune 'Simple Gifts'. It was composed in 1963 by Sydney Carter.
