Another way to look at it is, if I can do a job, why the fuck do my credentials matter? All that should matter is that I can do the fucking job. Ex: You need a server fixed in X amount of time. On your last point, again agreed and this is one of many flaws in the education system. Most of the knowledge you gain in school seems irrelevent except for pub quizzes, the 10% you actually needed for the job you were interested in and got "qualifications" for is all that mattered.
Most miscellaneous knowledge someone gains should really be down to personal incentive to actually learn it (some is arguably beneficial but not obviously so until later in life).
