@gm7add11 Well said; as a rape victim myself, no video ever truly shows what it's like, both in the act and the aftermath. If I discovered that man doing this, he would be in an emergency room by the time I would be done with him.
This was The Episode of General Hospital that changed everything.........it broke up Scotty and Laura and created Luke and Laura..................Luke was a Rapeist and Laura was a Murderess..................very odd Couple.
This seems like a typical woman's rape fantasy come to life. According to what I've heard, females fantasize about being "raped" because they want to imagine the pleasure of sex without the guilt of being "bad." Laura was attracted to Luke but felt that she couldn't act on it because of her marriage to Scotty.
I don't agree with it though because I believe that females who have rape fantasies don't actually want to be raped.

How did rape come to be such a big deal in our society? Oh let me guess... feminism. Being that they ended up married later on and how much he loved her, perhaps questioning the seriousness of what happened is needed. When the episode aired it wasn't as big a deal as it today either. Why did she go to a park in the middle of the night to cry- with her tits hanging out?? I guess she wanted to be raped again? Silly girl. Psychologists want ppl to think being raped is so bad b/c they'll benefit.
I watched all of this, and I saw them both as innocent, she loved him and he loved her, and she did not know how to deal with this being she was married and wanted to not be unfaithful, and he felt trapped and thought he was going to die, and lost his mind, and then ended up hurting the one person he loved. I hurt for both of them, and it seemed not black and white, quite complex and quite human.
Puleez she wanted it! I don't care what it seemed like. You had to have remembered what she was all about leading up to this...She was a big fat tease, he just couldn't take it anymore. no excuse, but it was more to the story trust me.
@atlasshrugged2u ...glad you have "ass" somewhere in your name there for you are an ASS...and your grammar sucks also...what is a tease? in all honesty it's nothing more than YOU not being able to control yourself...you must have to rape ..is that why you are here? you are a rapist? do you need help?
Ok first of all, I am a woman, and I grew up watching this when I was a kid. She WAS playing games with him acting all naive at the club with him and not her husband Scotty at 3:00 in the morning? Cmon! talking about how she just wants to help him blah blah blah. He was wrong, but that's what happened as a result of her constantly provoking the guy. Oh and btw, they ended up together. Buy it on DVD, and learn something honey.
I can't believe Luke would do something like this to Laura. And I thought that Luke and Laura were meant to be and they were happy together. How could you possibly marry the guy that raped you? How stupid could you be???
OMG, poor Laura. Poor Scotty. NOT poor Luke! I don't care how freakin guilty he felt, what he did is horrifying. Laura was clearly traumatized in these scenes, it was NOT a "seduction".
The comment time on this is interesting. Every time I hear the song "Rise" by Herb Albert I think of this incident. I went to do a search to see if it was the same song and this clip popped up. The acting was very good compared to todays soaps actors.
If you watched it from the beginning you wouldn't judge the characters or anything of this great love story. She forgave him and he always loved her. It was beautiful how everything turned out. I remember crying when they got married. And who can ever fort Liz Taylor cursed them on their wedding day. They sure don't make stories like this any more!!!
On Young and the Restless they tried too with Victor and Nikki but it's not the same. Luke and Laura were special, I mean they were heart and soul and human so. I just love them. I wish they would show the old soaps again. Not all of them but the story of them in a series.
It turned into a wonderful love story that lasted over 30 years. It was a different time then, Luke loved her and thought he was going to die. He hated himself for it and it's difficult to expalin
omg how did they go from this to being GH's super couple? omg he is quoted as "being the most popular character in soap history" - how how how how how?

"It wasn't "really" violent.???? What the heck do you mean by the word "really?" You sound like Woopie Goldberg when she commented on Polanski - "it wasn't rape rape."
How violent would the act of man forcing himself on a women for it to be rape? This scene was a violent rape - he forced her to the floor when it was over her blouse was ripped; she sat in a defensive manner when he extended his hand to her.
I knew what you meant when you made your first comment. I don't know why you would think that this was not a violent rape after viewing this scene. For the reasons I listed in one of my previous posts, I believe that this scene depicted a violent rape.
but we dont see anything. i mean he wasnt trying to hurt her at this time he just wasnt caring much whether he hurt her in the process and he felt remorse afterwards and tried to help her by extending his hand to her. she was obviosly frightened becuase it was rape but he didnt hit her or threaten her. thats what i mean by not violent. i mean rape is a violent act but as a rape it wasnt violent.
What I felt, after they showed this alternate version --with Laura clad in blouse and skirt instead of skimpy waitress uniform--is that they wanted to create two versions: the one originally aired was more ambiguous, ths was unquestionally a rape. The woman writer who created this story claimed she intended it to be seduction when the rape-romance ignited criticism when fans called to Tony Geary "Luke! Rape me!" I thought I did tape that version in 1988 when ABC reran many classic soap episodes
I saw and taped this version, and the one from 20 years earlier I remembered to be different! Laura was wearing her skimpy waitress uniform that looked like a bathing suit and at the end, when it was over, she was in the foreground, crying. Luke was in the background--he held out a hand to her, but she ran away, clad only in a midcalf coat. Luke held the ripped uniform to his face and cried, "LAURA!" and a cop met Laura crying in the park, asked, "Were you raped?" and she nodded.
You must be kinda young, since nowadays our minds are numbed to graphic violence and sex. Remember this was 1980, and I had mentioned in an earlier post, Genie was a minor. What exactley did you want to see?
it wasnt that they didnt show the actual rape, i understand that. but the music and lights gave an impression of joy and funkiness which i didnt think was relevant to the scene.
Oh,ok thanks for clearing that up!I thought you wanted to see the actual rape which I thought it was weird, but it was probably the wording! LOL!!
As for your comment-the music was Rise by Herb Alpert and on several episodes he played that song at the disco..it just so happened to be the song he played earlier in that particular episode that's why it was still on the turntable right before he raped her. There was no impression of joy it was just what was playing at the time.
You know, I've always experienced the disco lights and the music as this eerie, horrific surreal backdrop to the violence of what Luke was doing to Laura. Especially this segment, where we see the lights as Laura would have been seeing them -- looking straight up at the ceiling from the floor. Like some horrible, surreal nightmare.
In my opinion, the music and lights did not give an impression of joy and funkiness. I think that it contributed to the creepiness of the scene. When I saw this, I imagined what is said below - it was surreal and Laura must have been looking up at them or around the room at them. I don't think the audience was not supposed to make its own conclusion as suggested here. She is frightened, blouse torn, she said, "no." With all due respect to this heinous act, does anyone else think that Luke missed a golden opportunity after the rape?
He was being forced by Frank Smith on a suicide mission to assassinate Mitch Williams. He could have confessed to Laura's rape and been thrown in jail - a perfect excuse to NOT go through with the assassination.
lol-its true you really dont see the actual rape, (just the lights blinking and the music playing in the background) just the dancing before and what proceeded afterwards.
I saw an interview with Genie Francis (Which is on YouTube by the way!) and she said that while they were filming this scene, her studio teachers told the producers NOT to take it any further. That's why they didnt show the actual rape. Remember Genie was only 17 years old and a minor, and the producers could only take too many liberties. Also she said that Tony Geary talked to her extensivley before and after the scene to make sure she was ok. He was VERY concerned about how it affected her.
it is soooo sick when they do this on soaps to have rapists and their victims get together.. no sane person would get married to their rapist.. to rape someone is to violate and abuse them and who can love someone who does that to you...
This isn't true. Stockholm syndrome is actually quite common in rape cases. I know someone who was raped who is now dating her rapist, as strange as that sounds.
I wasn't even born when this happened! But, I've certainly heard about it. Now Luke and Laura's daughter is about to find out about it on GH, all these years later! Thanks so much for posting!
Oh. Wow. I can't believe someone actually has this clipped. I've never actually seen it, was just a toddler at the time. I am glad times have changed since this storyline!
The famous Luke and Laura episode. Never seen it til now but even when I was a child when I first heard about it, I thought it was so ridiculous when I heard "Luke & Laura got married!" As if! Marry your rapist? Theses soap operas ares so stupid. Thanks for posting though, I always wondered what the scene was that everyone was talking about.
I call bullshit. Laura clearly wanted it. She said no, but that tight little body said yes. Herb Alpert gets 'em every time. Sluts. I love it!

Also she said that Tony Geary talked to her extensivley before and after the scene to make sure she was ok. He was VERY concerned about how it affected her.

I knew Genie Frances was young but didnt know she was that young. It was so many years ago.
Im glad that they didnt take too many liberties and it was nice to hear that Tony Geary was concerned about how the scene affected her.

How many "actual" rapes do you see on t.v.? Actual means that it would rape rather than the depiction of rape.

Was she raped by an electrician? How come all we see are the lights?

it is soooo sick when they do this on soaps to have rapists and their victims get together.. no sane person would get married to their rapist.. to rape someone is to violate and abuse them and who can love someone who does that to you...

Yes....it was weird and messed up but this was the late 70's

Trust me, a lot of us thought it was weird and messed up even for the late 70's...

This isn't true. Stockholm syndrome is actually quite common in rape cases. I know someone who was raped who is now dating her rapist, as strange as that sounds.

Thank goodness they didn't show too much! I wouldn't handle it.

Wasn't it told on GH that Laura was found running through the park naked after the rape?

No, I never heard of that.
