Rei is the greatest character in the series (just in my opinion). Her absolute despondency, lack-of-humanity, and annihilationist tendencies. Coupled with her increasing interaction with Shinji, to the point where she realizes herself and her all-too-human emotions for him. And, following this revelation, her sacrificial death. All of the explorations of her clone history/psyche were very interesting, and the character/her themes were just absolutely beautiful.inmy verbose flowery opinion.

I hate it when people make fun of Rei and say she has no character just because she's quiet. Quiet doesn't mean lack of character if anything it means more character, quiet contemplation. I personally like all the characters of evangelion I just hate it when people are bias. My favorite is Kaworu, he may not be the best character on the show, but I find the questions surrounding him interesting.

i pefer shinji as my favorite character.. he just is the most tortured and i guess i relate to him.. poor kid, forced to drive a kick ass robot and destroy 300 foot tall monsters :\ haha no but really.

Rei in my opinion is the most advanced character (espeically since she really isn't a 'human', at least not a complete one). she's full of mysterious that take us viewers a very long time to figure out, and yet her real purpose is still very strange...
