  • @1paulll No my car was totaled before I got to fixing that problem. Try replacing your tachometer like somebody else below me said.

  • You need to replace the tach. Go to a u-pull-it junkyard and yank a cluster. I got one for 15 bucks. It is the only solution that I know of.

    1. First follow this video "Remove/replace gauge cluster, 4th gen Maxima" - by boredmder

    2. Remove the black casing around the front of the cluster (the clear shield should come with it).

    3. Remove the two screws behind the tach (it will just fall out now).

    4. Installation is the reverse.

  • my max had the same problem. the tac would follow up until about 2800rpm, and then start to drop. i just ended up going to the junk yard and found a max with a working dash with close to the same amount of miles, and swapped them.

    Haha no actually it's a W16 swap from veyron. I was barely touching the pedal. You probably have seen how the owner drove the donor car-Veyron into a lake. It was a bit of work to get that engine running again, but it was definitely worth it.

    Oh no my maxima got L-boned but it saved my life. Some lady was in a hurry and run the red light, and she hit me right near front left wheel. My car spun like 270 degrees and ended up far away from where i started. But it was all good, I made out without a scratch. I have an older 5 series bmw now, and you can see it in my other videos.

  • yeah it the electronic sensor on the back of the tranny.. my 96 does it to.. swap that and it will take care of that problem... its located right under the master cilinder

  • possibly an ignition coil is about to go out on your car. i had the same thing happen to me about 6 months ago. New coil fixed it.

  • the tachometer spring inside has unwound pull the entire cluster out then take out the tachometer and spin it counter clock wise many times until u can leave it sitting (0) then move it a higher rpm and let go and it will bo back to (0) by itself.

  • My 1995 Maxima (127K miles) has done the same thing for about a year. I asked the parts people at the dealer and they said they never heard of it. My knock sensor has been broken for at least 30K miles, not sure if it's related.

  • @1paulll - never have fixed either and now the car has 136K. Hope to get to it one of these days, the bad knock sensor could impair fuel economy. We've been running the car with hi-octane petrol since the manual calls for it and sure don't want to have to mess with those 24 valves.
