@kontaktseistrup how is this funny ? well, kontaktseistrup, I presume you're some kind kind of postulating, peroxided porn-star prick from Pori or Poland yourself then, pal ;:-)
yes minchin is a ridiculously talented pianist. But Elton elton is actually very excellent. But he plays rock n roll / ballad on the piano! Not this kind of stuff! If you want to compare Tim with someone, compare him to a jazz pianist.
@ferris5150 It's the separation of both sides of the brain.....something VERY hard to do, but is a virtue to be able to do in the music world, as Mr. Minchin shows here.
and he's exceptional at it.
Singing and playing in time is hard enough, let alone with such syncopation.
1 guy who commented is following an almost traditionalized practice on youtube by posting a joke in form of an assumption that is based on no actual knowledge, about people disliking a video, which has suceeded in entertaining him, which gave him the will to share his happiness aswell as the fact that he cannot understand people disliking, what he likes and therefore he combines these two points into one singular post, which, looking at the"like" count is regarded good. -Like it too. :D
I don't know what's more brilliant; Tim Minchin making fun of beat poetry, or the poem itself, or the fact that this, despite being beat poetry (which I despise), is actually great to listen to. This guy is pure genius.
Are you aware of how much more dificult it is to perform a beatpoem and play at the same time than it is to sing a song and play at the same time? A beatpoem (this one, and many others) has no sense of following the same rythm as the melody he plays, as opposed to a normal song which usually had at least the same basic rythm and the same key as the melody beneath it. Keeping track of two different rythms at the same time, i don't think it would prove him unprofessional in the least
@Gerbilsftw He is amazing -- but it's an art and tradition that's been around a while. Check out some old Tom Lehrer stuff -- I suggest "We will all go together when we go". A different era, different concerns, but the same fluency at the piano and with the crafting of language. Tim Minchin has acknowledged him as an inspiration and model.
@CHTis87 lol he looked at the piano at 1.00... And ... he's a professional pianist. Do you have to watch the glass as you bring it to your mouth to drink? Nope, you've practiced that enough! lol
Take a glance at any concert, with any of the worlds greatest pianists. Some of them will even stare at their keys, and you point out he glances down once in a while.
@zoerickard I am a gamer to I see were you got that logic. but a controller has like 10 buttons and they are in diffrent spots and all feel different. a piano has more that 30 I am sure ( no idea but I am sure more than that) and they are all pretty much the same. its not even close to the same. and if you don't game... then yeah your just a normal run of the mill retard.
@FanBoy2113 The logic comes from spending the past 4 years watching student pianists at my city's conservatorium (university level music school), its come from watching my best friend practice a song/piece so often that she can quite literally play the piece with her eyes closed, while drinking (when its at a 1 hande bit) etc. Minchin would've practised these pieces until he knew them off by heart, and then performed them nightly, so yeah, I think he doesn't need to look to play it perfect.
@zoerickard According to Tim himself, most of his stuff is improvised, sure you can practice but it's not the same thing as playing from sheets. And about looking at the keys - I think he looked at the keys just cause it felt natural taken that he had nothing to do with the microphone for those ten seconds.
Elton John is not an impressive pianist. Sure, his music makes loads of money, but it doesn't impress fellow musicians - and he's not trying to. Elton John is a singer/songwriter. Not a concert pianist. Comparing Elton John to Tim Minchin is like comparing Tom Petty to Steve Vai.
@MrZardoz777 It's a joke about how old ladies (and people who don't actually play piano) seem to think Elton is a fabulous pianist...he really isn't. Tim is on the other hand an AMAZING pianist and the contrast with Elton John is an insult
@tommysdaman Dude, I understand the concept of irony, I'm just saying Elton's a good musician who doesn't deserve to be the object of that kind of dismissive joke. We live in an age of total mediocrity; there's no shortage of talentless hacks to criticize.
Tim's a first-rate musician, but . . . write an album half as good as Captain Fantastic is all I can say.
Some one HELP!!! My girl and I watched a bunch of Tim you tubes on my Droid and there was one where he was on a stage in a big hall and we can't remember what the song was , because we watched so many that afternoon, but we couldn't help but still have the seemingly long, piano only bit at the end. It was absolutely mind blowing and I had the phrase "gang rape" arise in my mind when thinking of how to describe what I saw Mr. Minchin do to that piano. drewdels@gmail.com
@drewdels54 can you remember any of the verse? that might help. If not, just try the usual Dark Side, inflatable You, Rock n Roll Nerd, Some People have it worse than me, Ten Foot Cock
He looks at me intensely Eyes contact lens green with artifical envy Cocks his head and fixes me with a condescending stare Flicks his bleached, blond tipped hair And theorises thus: "You know what I reckon?" Pause for effect Adjusts his tackle as if it's semi-erect I feel I'd better give him what I know he expects: "What do you reckon?" A hand on the shoulder An avuncular wink Sips his lemon drink Spits out the pips Hands on hips Licks his lips Like a wolf near a flock...
@bernardhamhat Actually, what started all this Jim/Tim comments was a guy with the comment "I love Jim Minchin, he's such a great sanger", which is obviously a take on the song, but someone didn't quite get that :)
I think we've learnt a valuable lesson. Never compare anyone's ability to play the piano to Elton John. Or Tim Minchin for that matter, but for completely different reasons.
@tsjaaaa wow dude his name Tim, in the song Tim says "Jim" because the wanker got his name wrong.. if you listen at that point you can hear tim say " 'Jim.' '*underbreath* Tim' "
