I was quite relieved to find out that you startet playing Jazz piano in your mid twenties.
I am 18 years old. After having played much music of the 19th century, I concentrate now on atonal music, but especially on Jazz. I am able to play some standards, but, of course, I'm not good at improvising, yet.
It makes me really confident to know that someone, who started playing this kind of music rather late, has become such a great Jazz piano player. I love your music. It's so inspiring to me!
could you potentially make a tutorial for this . . . like you did with Misty. . . Very Helpful and I already know how to play this song I just want to take it to the next level like you have done!
I've just relistened to this, and it still sparkles like a diamond. YOU HAVE ALMOST 5000 SUBSCRIBERS who look forward to your next upload. Do the math: we'll all buy the CD - Tom Plays the Standards, Solo - and the net, while not a lavish amount, is real. You don't need a studio - your sound is fine - and the CD reproduction costs are minuscule. And don't worry about perfection: spontaneity is all. Your playing is extraordinarily fluent and swinging, and your arrangements are killers. Do it.
@petrusmalk il take a contempory pianist over a boring classical anyday..... this guys perfect. plus dont compare musicians against eachother.. especially contemp V classical...... you ask a classical person to improv as good as a contemp player, and u ask a contem to play a concerto. see? but id rather be able to improv than play classical stuff
@spike4379 This guy is brilliant. He has creativity and he has a very particular way to play. His improv are excellent. Perhaps you are write. Valentina Lisitsa is an excellent interpreter but she is just a interpreter. But her way to play is not boring. She is a genius when the question is to play like the composer intentions. Something that I believe the guy on this video can't do like her. By the way, I think he is more musical then she. The music comes from his handa very naturality.
Thanks everyone for the nice comments. Sorry, but I removed an entire thread because one of the posters resorted to name calling. I try to keep it light here :-) There were some really nice comments as well (thanks), but I decided to remove the entire thread in fairness to the original person posting. Sorry guys for removing your posts, I hope you understand.
Wow, how long have you been playing? You left me in the dust @ about the thirty second mark, LOL. Always wanted to play ever since I could walk to a piano, but my non-musician folks never got it. Finally they got me a trumpet when I was 9, and I picked up more instruments, but I had to teach myself keyboard as a grown man. An early start makes such a difference.
I can blow both straight and chromatic harmonica as good as anybody making instructional vids here. I still play horn just often enough to keep some chops, and I'm a first-rate percussionist. But there is something absolutely unique and captivating about the sound of the piano. The ease you have with voicing complex chords reminds me again that not learning piano as a child is the greatest regret of my life. I think my life would have been completely different.
Please, drop by the house sometime and play that piece again, in person, and just hang out a while. Then we'll all go out to Fatz or wherever for a bite. My wife and I can hardly wait. Just let us know when your coming.
And well deserved... keep up the great work. I also love playing the piano, though I usually love working with chords more than playing challenging riffs, etc.
Are there any scales you suggest I practice? Right now, I only quickly know the blues scale in C... I should probably memorize at least F and G too, if not all the keys'. What do you recommend? What do you enjoy? Which modes or chords are your favorites?
Yah, you shure did listen Chick's shit, 7!!! His Expressions album is probably his least known, and my favorite. All that post-bop harmony has rubbed off on ya, doggone it!
Jesus CHRIST! Absolutely staggering. I've heard a hundred renditions of this desert-island number, and you do something absolutely unique with it and still retain Swee'Pea's delirious chromaticism and lovely changes. Your transition to the main melody is (1) surprising ("the sound of surprise"--BINGO!), (2) utterly worked out (3) wholly convincing and (4) sent chills up my spine. A great musician can see into the bones and tissue of a piece: your success begins there. Marvellous performance.
I like it a lot. You know, I have a habit of requesting this song when I am in a bar where a pianist happens to be playing, and more often then not, the pianist has a hard time fulfilling the request. At the end they'll say something about "stumbling their way through it."
Anyway, 7notemode: on your website, you say that learned jazz from someone who had a good "methodology." Would you mind sharing that with us, or pointing us to a similar source for those of us who would like to study jazz?
That is a challenging question. Listening and emulating the great jazz recordings, the Mark Levine Book: The Jazz Piano Book, and of course lessons with a local jazz teacher if possible. Sorry I can't be more specific.
Oh yes Roger , this is truly a very high level of music, I totally agree with you, and I want to also add that sometimes it comes in a dimension of interpretation where it passes over any "musical level", where we note a clearly refined musicality character of the protagonist, as now in this song, that is pure great Music :-)
that was fantastic. I really want to learn jazz piano... I have just started learning to play at the ripe age of 27. how long do you think it would take me to learn a piece like that. silly question I know...
