  • cool hehe

  • Nice!

  • great feel

love the way you mix your influences right on and keep up the good work

  • I was quite relieved to find out that you startet playing Jazz piano in your mid twenties.

I am 18 years old. After having played much music of the 19th century, I concentrate now on atonal music, but especially on Jazz. I am able to play some standards, but, of course, I'm not good at improvising, yet.

It makes me really confident to know that someone, who started playing this kind of music rather late, has become such a great Jazz piano player. I love your music. It's so inspiring to me!

  • I know the original (Corea) piece quite well, and I have to say that your variations are delightful.

  • what key is it in please?

  • @chicagojoy1 Db major

  • As we like to say . . . "That was BEASTIE!" LOVED IT!!

  • It's so elegant and delicate!

  • Wow! You're incredible! You beautiful jazz piano playing got me out of a bad mood! Thank you so much! I love it!

  • @BeatleUniversity Haha! Glad to hear you're in a better mood!

  • What king of piano is this? so wonderfull warm smooth tone, mid ranged... unleesss, did you filter the audio>?

  • @dzedakuzohl Steinway B. Thanks. I did EQ and add reverb.

  • lol the beginning. just look at the camera like OHI GUYS!

  • amazing this is dave crusin haha

  • Did Corea's take give you inspiration? Great feel and interpretation! Your audio feed is prime too...nice

  • @twentymoreyears I know and really like the Chick Corea version.

  • Absolutely great!! Beautifully performed, I could listen to that all day.

  • could you potentially make a tutorial for this . . . like you did with Misty. . . Very Helpful and I already know how to play this song I just want to take it to the next level like you have done!

    God Bless

    Joi

  • @joi124 i'll put it on my list.

  • @7notemode thanks so much!

  • @joi124 yes, i agree. I would love a tutorial for this, it's such an amazing arangement. All your music is just outstanding

Awesome turning in already such a magnificent piece of playing.

  • Wonderful bassplaying @ 1:20.. Ouch!

Awesome turning in already such a magnificent piece of playing.

  • I've just relistened to this, and it still sparkles like a diamond. YOU HAVE ALMOST 5000 SUBSCRIBERS who look forward to your next upload. Do the math: we'll all buy the CD - Tom Plays the Standards, Solo - and the net, while not a lavish amount, is real. You don't need a studio - your sound is fine - and the CD reproduction costs are minuscule. And don't worry about perfection: spontaneity is all. Your playing is extraordinarily fluent and swinging, and your arrangements are killers. Do it.

  • @thelex001 Thanks so much for the encouragement!

  • these lushes must all be drinking vodka redbull,

  • GREAT GREAT GREAT skills

  • Who can help me 1:22 - 1:40 pleeaase

  • Stunning! Thanks. :)

  • Wow the best Piano Player From Youtube..............

  • @Malimovic Haha! I wouldn't claim that, but thank you!

  • @Malimovic He is very, very good, but the best piano player in youtube is Valentina Lisitsa.

  • @petrusmalk il take a contempory pianist over a boring classical anyday..... this guys perfect. plus dont compare musicians against eachother.. especially contemp V classical...... you ask a classical person to improv as good as a contemp player, and u ask a contem to play a concerto. see? but id rather be able to improv than play classical stuff

  • @spike4379 This guy is brilliant. He has creativity and he has a very particular way to play. His improv are excellent. Perhaps you are write. Valentina Lisitsa is an excellent interpreter but she is just a interpreter. But her way to play is not boring. She is a genius when the question is to play like the composer intentions. Something that I believe the guy on this video can't do like her. By the way, I think he is more musical then she. The music comes from his handa very naturality.

  • @spike4379 Oh, sorry for my terrible English.

  • @petrusmalk OMG. Hell yes. But this guy's awesome too.

  • this just great..

  • wow! its not my stile, but still awesome!

  • Please quit teasing us with the CD. Me and many others will buy the CD just give us the word. HOw about making it a spring 2010 project.

    PLease

  • Can you do a tutorial for Lush Life like you did for Misty?

  • I'm a big fan of 7notemode! Utterly beautiful interpretation and playing. I love you.

  • Thank you so much JuneBee 55

  • I have been listening to jazz for 50 years and this is up there with the best; where are your CD's?

  • No CD yet. I hope to do one this year. Thanks.

  • This guys' technique is piano playing perfection in action.

    11/10!

  • Thanks acorntechnique!

  • absolutely amazing!! i only wish i could play like that. i just dont know enough about chord progressions :\ keep up the good music! =D

  • Just heard this sone on Pandora, just got into this Genre of Smooth jazz, I really need to learn how to play jazz on Trumpet or on Guitar

  • I love the ostinato you came up with under the melody. Great version. A little busy for me, but if that's what you were going for it's cool.

  • Muito bom ! Very good the music and the sound of piano and beautiful! Congratulations!!!!!!! Parabéns !!!!!

  • Thanks everyone for the nice comments. Sorry, but I removed an entire thread because one of the posters resorted to name calling. I try to keep it light here :-) There were some really nice comments as well (thanks), but I decided to remove the entire thread in fairness to the original person posting. Sorry guys for removing your posts, I hope you understand.

  • greatly enjoyed.

  • Wonderful job!!!

  • Wow. Beautiful tune, and very well played. Not much else to say.

  • Wow, how long have you been playing? You left me in the dust @ about the thirty second mark, LOL. Always wanted to play ever since I could walk to a piano, but my non-musician folks never got it. Finally they got me a trumpet when I was 9, and I picked up more instruments, but I had to teach myself keyboard as a grown man. An early start makes such a difference.

  • I'm glad you took up piano as an adult. I'll bet you still enjoy it, late start or not :-)

  • I can blow both straight and chromatic harmonica as good as anybody making instructional vids here. I still play horn just often enough to keep some chops, and I'm a first-rate percussionist. But there is something absolutely unique and captivating about the sound of the piano. The ease you have with voicing complex chords reminds me again that not learning piano as a child is the greatest regret of my life. I think my life would have been completely different.

  • Please, drop by the house sometime and play that piece again, in person, and just hang out a while. Then we'll all go out to Fatz or wherever for a bite. My wife and I can hardly wait. Just let us know when your coming.

  • PLAY IT!!!!

  • dude f'n awesome

  • Excellent, your very talented and skilled!

  • Uh-huh.

  • OUTSTANDING!

  • Nice music. Beautiful changes.

  • nicely done...

  • Ahh.... i feel like i'm riding on the notes! beautiful!

  • Come ti chiami?

  • questo secondo me è bravo davvero!

  • out standing i wanted to play the piano but i kind of gave up but ur dolphin dance has incouraged me to try again

  • Good to hear ZxZ...It's never too late. Get back to it!!

  • Help me somebody: Who in the hell is playing the piano????

  • It's 7notemode!! :-) Thanks 476892

  • C'est formidable! Avez-vous déja enregistré un CD? Si oui où peut-on se le procurer? Merci

  • Pas encore un CD. J'espere bientot. :-)

  • absolutely amazing... God bless you! I think this is pretty much the definition of perfection...

  • Thanks SJH. It is much appreciated.

  • And well deserved... keep up the great work. I also love playing the piano, though I usually love working with chords more than playing challenging riffs, etc.

Are there any scales you suggest I practice? Right now, I only quickly know the blues scale in C... I should probably memorize at least F and G too, if not all the keys'. What do you recommend? What do you enjoy? Which modes or chords are your favorites?

  • Pause at 0:02.

    "HULLO!"

Awesome playing, mate. Great to listen to.

  • I love how you can run all over the piano with expertise. You are magnificent.!!!

You were born to play the piano!!!

  • Thanks scottergreen3. born to ..maybe...love to...definitely!

  • Yah, you shure did listen Chick's shit, 7!!! His Expressions album is probably his least known, and my favorite. All that post-bop harmony has rubbed off on ya, doggone it!

  • Expressions CD is great! Thanks, johnp234

  • Why would he need to watch himself? He's far beyond the range of 100s.

  • Always concentrated on the lyrics to this amazing tune and never really the syncopation. But this gives it a whole different riff! Nice work!

  • My god... It takes allot to impress me, but this nearly made me piss my pants. Your technique is so crispy and well articulated.

  • Thanks, thphaca.

  • just crazy... very good!

  • splendid! i iwish i could jam/sing this version of Lush life in a little bit faster beat.

  • I'd give it six stars if it were an option.

  • I'd give it 100.

  • Thanks Hendrix and AsaCameron

  • son of a bitch. awesome performance!

  • Jesus CHRIST! Absolutely staggering. I've heard a hundred renditions of this desert-island number, and you do something absolutely unique with it and still retain Swee'Pea's delirious chromaticism and lovely changes. Your transition to the main melody is (1) surprising ("the sound of surprise"--BINGO!), (2) utterly worked out (3) wholly convincing and (4) sent chills up my spine. A great musician can see into the bones and tissue of a piece: your success begins there. Marvellous performance.

  • thelex001 - Thanks a million for that comment!

  • BRILLIANT!!!!

  • 1:21 = L.O.V.E.

    the running bass is amazing!

  • I like it a lot. You know, I have a habit of requesting this song when I am in a bar where a pianist happens to be playing, and more often then not, the pianist has a hard time fulfilling the request. At the end they'll say something about "stumbling their way through it."

Anyway, 7notemode: on your website, you say that learned jazz from someone who had a good "methodology." Would you mind sharing that with us, or pointing us to a similar source for those of us who would like to study jazz?

  • That is a challenging question. Listening and emulating the great jazz recordings, the Mark Levine Book: The Jazz Piano Book, and of course lessons with a local jazz teacher if possible. Sorry I can't be more specific.

  • You play this with such a high level of musicianship it's truly amazing.

  • Oh yes Roger , this is truly a very high level of music, I totally agree with you, and I want to also add that sometimes it comes in a dimension of interpretation where it passes over any "musical level", where we note a clearly refined musicality character of the protagonist, as now in this song, that is pure great Music :-)

  • that was fantastic. I really want to learn jazz piano... I have just started learning to play at the ripe age of 27. how long do you think it would take me to learn a piece like that. silly question I know...

  • elharto, That is hard to say. The main thing is to enjoy the process of learning. Whatever level you are at, playing can be enjoyable. That is more what I focus on.

  • me too.

  • You are awesom would you reccommend any sheet music of this song to play?

  • Sorry, I don't know any sheet music.

  • wow that was amazing. im 17 can i ever that good?

  • why not?

  • perhaps

  • Comment removed

  • amazing... is there a tutorial out there with this same chords?

  • lol you showed your face this time

  • Absolutely wonderful. I just read you're profile; are you still not gigging? What a shame! You should be!

  • This makes me feel really good!

  • I love this interpretation on a beloved standard.

  • Very nice and impressive chord technique

Do you know of any way I can get the music for this piece?

  • Sorry I don't have a transcription. One day I may do it on a digital piano to create a midi file. I'll put it on my list.

  • Stunning!! Absolutely beautiful.....

  • wow this is sick. too good. (thought I was good, but this is insane). I like your chords and you have a pretty good technique seriously. I have to practice my scales :) woow nice basslines too. gosh. excellent.

  • that's right

  • hot damn i love your bass lines

  • wow, really good, you truly are a Virtuoso...

  • that was perfect! is that a baby grand....?

  • Wonderful!

  • awesom

  • Oh wow! This is great. Well, all your stuff's great but this one in particular. Can't believe Strayhorn wrote most of the song at 16 either

  • good

    so soothing

  • very good, chappeau

  • wow!!

  • Are you playing with a metronome? I was playing along on my drum kit and it seemed dead on.......great tempo

  • sabianbol, no metronome.

  • The sound is absolutley fantastic. Is it he quality of the piano or is this a high def video?

  • Thanks, Creolelady. It's a standard def video, but I put in a separately recorded audio track that is much higher fidelity than the audio on the camcorder.

  • Great performance man with the amazing base sequences and riffs .

  • high five, man!

  • i wish i culd play piano

  • Another great piece. This is wonderful. You play it well. Good job!

  • I don't quite understand jazz (can't play it) but I love the runs.

Perhaps someday I'll be good enough to attempt it.

  • Wow awesome

  • Aha! the face behind the music 0:02

  • Nice. Great tune. Looks like you're lucky enough to have access to a Steinway B.

  • omg i love this piece do u think u can message me the notes?

  • Is this still in Db like the standard version? Nice chops man.

  • Yes, this arrangement is also in Db.

  • talk about having musical talent O.o

  • I want to play like that...:D

    amazing!!

  • i love this part.1:25

  • exceptional. Id love to see that live.

  • VERY GOOD......

  • Wow! That was amazing - your fingers move so quickly and easily and you make it look ever so easy that it really is!

  • i would love to have the sheet music for this. i love to play but i think that your style and precision is exceptional and nothing like i've ever seen before. if you could send me the sheet music or recommend a site which has it i would be so grateful ;)

  • Thanks harmonium123. Unfortunately, I don't have any sheet music. This was improvised. I'll put it on my list to do on a midi keyboard at some point so I will have a midi file to share.

  • well that some damm good improv! If/when you make the midi can i have a copy too please =)?

  • Those runs at 0:55 - absolutely flawless technique. Another fantastic video, such a natural talent perfectly complemented by evident practise and study.

  • awesome congrats

  • That was so B E A U T I F U L! did you learn that or you got the music from somewhere because thats exactly what i want to play on the piano! that kind of jazz! and i can play anthing as long as i got sheet music for it so if you have the sheet music, can you please send it to me!! or if theres any sites you go too, can you tell me!! if you do, thankyou very much!! i really enjoyed that!

  • The audio quality is amazing! Did you use a mic?

  • can i ve the score

  • Sorry, there is no score. This was improvised.

  • Niiiiice!
