God/the gods are created to explain what, at the time, is unexplainable by research and observation. As time went on the number of gods required to explain the unexplainable decreased because man discovered the reasons for some natural events. As man continues to discover new things and explanation to "mysterious" events, God will become less important to society overall. However God will remain necessary to explain the soul before, during, and after life.
