  • "War is hell"

  • Ethel is a riot. She's also excellent in "It's A Mad, Mad........World". Thanks for the laugh.

  • MERMAN

  • So great of her to actually be in this O:

  • i tend to bust that song clip out all the time. awesome

  • MERMAN!!

  • Ethel was able to make fun of herself.

  • Personally, if I was the wife, I'd take him home with me...I'd keep him around for the entertainment!

  • Wow, he does a REALLY good Ethel Murman impression.

  • @Charmolution That IS Ethel Merman!

  • This is one of the scenes where it's incredibly stupid unless you know who Ether Murman is.

  • hur hur funny.

  • I'd never heard this song before I saw this movie, but I could hear the music playing while Ethel was singing. She's really talented.

  • This is the best scene in this movie! Lol

  • Robert Osborne from TCM introduced this as "also starring Ethel Mermann, who plays Lt. Herwitz, who thinks he's Ethel Mermann".

  • What a classic....this is surely one of the great.......haha

  • I used to be Ethel Mermann in my spare time.

  • facebooked

  • how the hell can 2 people dislike this? Such a classic moment, haha

  • War is Hell.

  • If you ever been to the VA-you would understand...Hell, I got my appoint for this month already!!! Then after, a nice treat at BENNIGANS!!!

  • One of the funniest things ever, indeed.

  • Beautiful comedy.

  • haha :) luv this movie!!

  • Me and my baby thought this was soooooooo funny.....RIP Tank....

  • FREAKING HILARIOUS!

  • Don't eat me! My favourite me. Can't wait to be a pilot.

  • This scene alone is worth half the movie!!

  • classic. i think this Cameo ties Bill Murray's Cameo in Zombieland.

  • I love this scene so much I have it memorized.

  • ahhhmazing xD

  • her name is MERMAN --

  • Please no VA for me I want to die in my sleep!!!!

  • Awesome. Ethel was such a great, powerful singer. She was awesome in "There's No Business Like Show Business"

  • Ethel wasn't Jewish. "Zimmerman" isn't a strictly Jewish name (I have a Catholic friend who is a Zimmerman). The name was shortened because it was too long for theater marquees. She writes about it in her autobiography which, as you might imagine, was totally an Ethel book, honest, funny and full of vim and vigor. Plus one very big and very funny joke.

  • Did her book honestly discuss her disdain and cruelty toward Betty Hutton?

  • Have never heard of that and I don't recall it in the book. I know she made Virginia Gibson's life miserable in "Happy Hunting" and wanted "Little Lamb" yanked from "Gypsy" but Sandra Church said she'd walk if that happened. She also fired Sondra Lee on the spot from a show because she hated her work in "Peter Pan." Of course Hutton wanted to make the film of "Annie" but was too old at that point and no one was happy Garland was fired from it, and unhappier when Hutton made a big hit of it.

  • It's true. She wrote 2 books (in 1955 and 1978) and the story about how her name came about was in the second.

  • Oops. I meant Merman wanted to make the film of "Annie." I think she resented the fact Hutton took over the film from Garland and thought Hutton was a low comedy type.

  • @waynebrasler I think people still made assumptions about "Jew names" back then, sadly.

I want to read her autobiography! Sounds like a great read.

  • This scene cracks me up everything time I see. And it was so great of Ethel Merman to be o.k. with lampooning her legendary song.

  • I liked the way Elaine's hair was done, and I called it "buh, buh, buh, bee, bee"

  • i love the beginning second lol

  • Also, not to be That Guy, but it's "MErman" not "MUrman."

Her birth name was Ethel Zimmerman. She de-Jewish-ized it for showbiz.

  • Comment removed

  • I love how Ethel stays on key even after the sedative is administered...just gives a lovely little slide.

What does the woman say in the beginning? I can't make it out.

  • She says, "What's his problem!" When she hears Lt. Herowitz groan, but it's really Ethel in bed.

  • This is Leonard Maltins favorite moment in this movie too. My favorite is Barbara Billingsley speaking jive.

  • Everything's coming up roses...

  • My favorite part of "Airplane", hands down. I laughed so hard at this!

  • War is Hell! That cracks me up.

  • Lt. Hurwitz rules.

  • One of the funniest moments in any movie...ever.

  • "War is hell" - still makes me laugh!
