  • Looks like classic Buffalo migration...migrating its parts all over the airfield.

  • where is the earth shattering kaboom?

  • how come the pilots never ejected when they were going to crash?

  • it will fit on a carrier now, look folding wings.

  • well it looked survivable.

  • ha too bad thats funny

  • Farnbourough airshow.

  • after seeing this crash firsthand, some countries actually bought this aircraft based on the survivability of this particular accident

  • this pilot's a menace to everything else up there

  • omg I hope the runway is ok

  • And thus concludes our Short Landing Demonstration.

  • @cmdrnmartin

    Haha. Any questions?

  • I'm not a pilot but I think I would have tried to land more gently.

  • @TheCannonofMohammed

If you would be a real pilot you would know that he probably did all he could to land it properly and not crash it into the WTC ...

  • lol nice description

  • haha, definitely

  • This was at an airshow. I remember seeing it on the news when I was a kid. The pilot was demonstrating the STOL characteristics and overcooked his descent.

  • Hey, here's a one question quizz for all the pilots (or wannabe pilots) out there...what's the single most important thing you have as a pilot? Let's see what we all figure it is. My intake was asked this by a check and training pilot once and it was amazing the variety of answers he got...almost all were wrong according to him. Go for it.

  • In 1997 I ferried another similar plane with the same pilot who crashed landed this plane. He said that both props "feathered" on him.

  • Ouch!

  • Wasn't due to failed LG. It was due to failure to arrest excessive sink rate. Pilot error.

  • With respect, is that "pilot error" conclusion taken from an accident report or similar source or is that your own conclusion? I'd like to know because someone else mentioned that the pilot reported both props feathered on him. Sounds extremely unlikely that they'd both feather in this critical phase of flight without a little finger trouble in there somewhere. If they did then I'd really like to know why as I fly for a living and want to keep doing that...living that is :-)

  • The AAIB report is available on the internet for free download.

It states that there was no evidence of pre-impact malfunction and the captain admitted to pulling the props into beta-range inflight.

This was something other DHC pilots did in demonstrations but took good judgement.

Loverseed didn't want to overshoot his aimed touchdown point and held it in beta too long and stalled it.

  • Thanks. Thought that might have been the deal. Frigging air shows and demos.

  • defective landing gear???

    are u fucken insane?

i think any landing gear would be defective after you hit the ground at about 2000 fpm.....lol

  • hahahahhaha totally agree :D

  • I am pretty sure the captain did crushed some pussies after that awesome landing

  • Captain the landing wus perfect!. Nooooottt

  • Almost wants to make me cry

  • i talked to the co-pilot on board that flight hes name is Brad Fowles, he said all the controls and everything just wouldnt work, they tried to bring the nose back up but couldnt it didnt want want to, he said its like he saw death in font of his eyes.

  • Farnborough Air Show, UK - 1984. The display is always performed on the Westerly runway heading. This day there was a minor tailwind component, and as the Buffalo always displayed at minimum speed, they stalled as they turned final and cahght the tailwind. I was there! The pilots exited the escape hatch on top of the flight deck, stood on top and took a bow!!

  • hmmm...WRONG!

They reversed the blades on the propellers while on descent (stalling the wing). A feature of the buffalo that has now been fixed!

  • The AAIB report cites both unfavourable weather and a "transitory handling problem outside the flight envelope". I was actually there in an official ATC role. The breeze was right to left as the viewer sees the video. In the video you can see the crew working the elevators to no avail as the aircraft was already irrevocably stalled. Whatever the primary handling cause, they ended up at very low speed in a steep descending turn, which was unrecoverable due to the tailwind. OK?

  • could you please link me to that?

My dad worked for DeHavilland at the time, and was good friends with the pilot himself.

  • From memory it was at an air show and they were trying to demonstrate short field landing abilities and got it very wrong. All on board survied.

  • those pilots must really suck if that was an engine failure then turn both off and he should not have mad it that sharp he should have done a belly landing if he was gona be that dumb

  • too low speed?
