I like seeing a big hit as much as anybody else, but anytime a tackler leads with the helmet, he's taking a chance. If he hits helmet to helmet, regardless of whether he intended it that way, the penalty should be enforced. period. it's no different from calling weak ass blows to the head of a QB.

Tate's helmet also flew off later in the game when he dove for a touchdown so I wouldn't say the hit was hard just because he lost his helmet. Ben Tate definitly won the battle that day, not only because of the awkward hit that sent Eric Berry 5 yards in the air, but also the stiff arm that Tate put on Berry right after this hit and another time they met in the first quarter around the 10:30 mark when Tate ran into about 4 defenders and Berry got laid out. ESPNU is replaying this game now.

@halofan87 sorry man...but this play you are showing here is NOT in the category of "lays out"...that implies either knocked out cold(concussion) , or when a player is hit so hard he actually struggles to his feet woozily or requires assistance to get off the field. Again, look at the play...Ben Tate was not phased in the least little bit by that "hit" AND he got the first down...you can argue the point all you want. But plain and simple this is NOT a "lays out" tackle/hit.

Beginning of the play EB is 10yrds away from the L.O.S so of course Ben Tate is going to get the first down but He only GOT ENOUGH for the first. At least he still got the first down. So I don't know exactly what the big deal is other than Tate doesn't know how to strap on his helmet on right, but other than that, Tate accomplished what he needed to do and Eric Berry or the defense rather, failed at making the stop. Also, the hit wasn't even that great, the only thing that made it look like a "lay out" is the helmet flying off which doesn't mean squat. Learn the definition of a lay out son, Tate got right back up....
