  • my respects....Maestra

  • I love her!!!!

  • that thing she does with her hands are kinda weird and cute

  • I see comments on this video that are over a year old. Why am i just now hearing of this girl ?

  • 8 People lack the ability to listen.

  • Voix Suave...................

  • Very good rythmic section!!!

  • that was gorgeous :]

  • :) So excited to learn from her in a workshop she'll be doing next week. She is so great!

  • I love this, but that terrible bass tone from the 80s keep distracting me

  • @Zombbg4 terrible bass tone? This is acoustic bass you're talking about....you must not listen to much jazz sir

  • @winterkilldrummer23 lol nearly 80% of what I listen to is jazz, and I've been playing double bass for 7 years. I guess tone is subjective, but it's clearly colored quite a bit by his pickup system and for the worse IMO.

  • This just ooses with beauty one of my favourite versions of this song ever!

  • Nice vocal over a Herbie Hancock creation!

  • Dope vocalist, dope band! I'd love to hear her on a track with Amel Larrieux...

  • Robert Glasper does this well too!

  • The best jazz voice ever

  • @hungry4love1 no. Just the best right now :-P

  • velvet touch, luv your sound.

  • 2:58..... superfingers

  • Great sounds.......when are you next in sunny London ;-)

  • amazing...

  • I love you Gretchen

  • soo gooood!!!

  • Beautiful song...her music is a light in this sometimes dark world...

  • Absolutely love!!!!!

  • According to wiki, her father played bass for Frank Zappa. Not that it matters- she sounds great. Love the song.

  • Amazing :)

  • that dude on keys is blazin...

  • @IamJayLotus

Yeahhh maaann...and he have his left hand chords down cooolllldddd!

  • @OP you seem to have listed the track Butterfly as Gretchen's - while the vocal are her's the original composition is Herbie Hancock. Anal maybe but all props to the master.

  • All dae long.

  • I love how she really feels the music. Especially the beginning.

  • sometimes being on youtube leads to great discovery......this is one....for me...thanks

  • so divine...you are one of my favorites!

  • Yes may be I should spent more time listening to this kind of music.:)

Though I mean that the rhythms she sings are okey but when she is singing I have a feeling that she is before the beat without a connection to the real pulse of the music.

I really liked her band. The piano player's approach to this music is more familiar to me.

  • @artdivine she's playing off the beat, if you pay attention.

  • @artdivine Yes, you're hearing the pianist playing both the upbeat (just before) followed by the downbeat. Think of her as singing that upbeat without the downbeat. But I think they'd say it's a 'feel' and not analysis. I just know the first time I heard a Brazilian trio, with the bass player always just ahead of the beat and so amazing to my American ears it was like the world opened up. For a change, listen to "Still" video by Gretchen - seems easy but it's in 11. Stay open, keep listening!

  • I don't like her sence of time especially when singing rhytmical patterns. They are out of the beat.

  • @artdivine Yes, because she commonly utilizes Brazilian and African rhythms, which from your comment, you may not be familiar with. The rhythmic concept here is highly developed, but can't be appreciated if you're expecting the emphasis to always be on the beat. In her music, it may fall just before or after the beat, with different rhythmic patterns played against eachother, and 5, 7 or even 11 beats per measure. If you're open to it, try listening closely to Braziilan music. You may like it.

  • Piano player got Soul..

  • beautiful voice.

I wish i could sing like that and im male.

  • Loving the sultry sounds of Gretchen Parlato!

  • Outstanding! Thoroughly melodic, soothing and entertaining.

  • @rustinpieces No. Jazz.

  • Digging the rhythmic and harmonically dense approach the piano player is taking.

  • the bass players tie is killing it for me

  • AWESOME!!!!!

  • the clapping kinda bothers me...

  • AWESOME!!!!

  • Uvisni - I would like to know where you got these recordings.. This amazing. Is this a DVD? Where did you get it? Thanks! ;)

  • Wow what a soothing voice she has...

  • 'Better than rap

  • Thus god created music......... go head show him a high praise

  • @jordangz98 You're right... let's give a hand to God on piano, God on the drums, God playing bass and God at the microphone. And of course God for composing the tune.

  • Taylor Eigsti, good job !

  • WOOOOOOO

  • So Cooool!!

  • Aaron Parks was ill and Gerald Clayton too or why did Taylor play on this record? I dont know, but otherwise i wouldnt have heard him. this guy is awesome!

  • I DIDN'T THINK THAT i WOULD LOVE ANOTHER WOMANS VOICE LIKE I DO AMEL LARRIEUX, BUT THEN I HEARD GRETCHEN! HEAVEN SENT!

  • very sensual !

  • Btw this @Theophelia88a is hella trippin

  • She's hot ;)

  • I just stumbled across this lady, never heard of her before, but I'm impressed. So warm, sensitive and fragile...so butterfly ;-)

  • wow I am so behind I completely dig her! Where have I been!

  • wow, she is amazing. so calming

  • Gretch is the Shizzzz!!!!

  • anyone catch the harmonic on the bass at the beginning??? so subtle and sexy lol

  • One word.. #Swag

  • Gretchen is one of front-rank jazz singers on the planet as shown here. She was voted the #1 Rising Star Vocalist in the 2011 DownBeat International Jazz Critics Poll and charted #9 in the established category too. She's a winner.

  • I love this. God bless this young lady and her cohorts :)

  • Gretchen is an amazing singer! I saw her this week in The Red Sea Jazz Festival, Eilat- Israel, and I was fascinated by her!

  • she have the sexiest voice i have ever lisend to

  • @bbking1994 You obviously haven't heard me sing in the shower.

  • @stuntdouble777 a sexy answer :)

  • I just heard Gretchen Parlato and her band do this same song on One Shot Not in Paris with Meshell Ndegeocello, Manu Katche and Pino Palladino joining in and it was completely amazing! I hope they post the performance online. But this video is awesome as well. I love everything she does.

  • @TheOphelia88a Oh wow, I don't know what prompted you to have this kind of response. But you should relax... I didn't say anything about "Judging people", All I said is that I separate my like/dislike for my music from judging if it's good or bad music. They are two very different points.

It will also help if you stop taking things so personally and resort the name calling. The reason I put the first name in parenthesis has more to do with formality than insulting you.

  • There is fine line between "not liking it" and judging something as good or bad, talented/mediocre. In my experience I tend to appreciate music better when I suspend those kind of judgements(or prejudices), because it's those judgements that tends to get in the way appreciating something for what it is.

  • @TheOphelia88a I am sorry if I came across as being presumptuous or rude. you have every right to say you don't connect with the music emotionally, and I don't think the comment would have been so controversial if you stayed at that. But I am not sure how anyone can go from that to claiming so and so is untalented or mediocre. There are tons of music I don't "get".. sometimes it takes years for me to realize what's so great about it.

  • Comment removed

  • I didn't say you weren't allowed to state your opinion, I am equally allowed to tell you that your opinion shows ignorance about the music they are playing.

  • @TheOphelia88a

I was open enough to explain to you the subtle rhythmic nuances in the music after you called me a "moron". Y you responded to my criticism about your musical understanding with plain insult. And now you are telling me it's a waste of time for you to explain your point.. so, who is the stubborn one here?

  • @TheOphelia88a

Both (Herbrie) Hancock and (Wyane) Shorter are already fans. Hancock has said that Parlato has a “deep, almost magical connection to the music,” and Shorter has said “in an inconspicuous way, Gretchen plays the same instrument as Frank Sinatra.”

I hope you realize how much your opinion is at odds with expert jazz musicians. I am not saying you have to like this music, a lot of people don't but I highly doubt any good jazz musician will consider this "mediocre".

  • @TheOphelia88a stop being a little bitch

  • @TheOphelia88a well if that's the case please tell me what's so mediocre about this music

As far as I can tell the song(from what I can tell) is mostly in 7, but there is a lot of cross-rhythm going on. The first part of the vocal is the 6+8+6+8, solo piano part is 6+8+8+6. It takes a lot of talent to be able to play these kind of rhythm effortlessly. I can understand enough about jazz to appreciate that.

  • Bachleor of music.. oh great.. like that means anything.

There is a reason why people like Grethen Parlato and Taylor Eigsti are where they are in the music world and working with cats like Joshua Redman and Eric Harland(I hope you know who they are, if you claim to know anything about jazz), and it's not because they all look pretty and have everything handed down to them.

  • @TheOphelia88a I have my opinion too. Your opinion suck, and you are a mediocre singer who are just bitter about someone else being more talented&successful than you are

  • @TheOphelia88a

your comment speaks more about your ignorance about music than anything else... looking at your channel it seems like you're not into jazz, that's ok,... but it's sad when you label these people mediocre, when you probably don't understand half of the things that's happening musically here.

looking at your comments... It's no wonder Music now a days is all going down hill!

  • Is this on any of her albums?

  • He went ham on that piano!!!!

  • Jesus. Gretchen. Jesus.

  • I didn't know that I had never heard of her until yesterday in the car....The great DJ Rodney Franks from KUVO Jazz 89 out of Denver played her rendition of "All I Can Say"...I was floored.

Now I see her doing this....She does "E.S.P"...etc. Unbelievable stuff.

  • WOW!! Who is that on keys man? Blew me away..(swoon)...I need a chair...

  • Wow, what she does with Herbie Hancock's cool jazz tune from the 70's...BTW, the whole band soars on this one!!

  • only the Best....!! i LOVE...!!

  • saw her at the Detroit jazz fest last year. definitely pushes the limits of rhythms and can sing in tune. more than i can say for a lot of singers these daze

  • q onda esse viadi de piano e rhodes fazendo layers acusticos!! tudo bem legal ein dinoww!

  • Wow. A new, young singer who is completely comfortable with rhythmically complex arrangements and can sing in tune? She is a diamond.

  • @OLugs Well said, she is a breath of fresh air, she exhibits her own vocal style, not copied or repetitive.

  • I saw her in London and she was stunning. I agree with the other commentor that it was hard to listen to anyone else after that. She is becoming the most important vocalist of our time. No one does what she does.

  • Yesterday I didnt even know about this girl, now I feel like the most important thing is the world is to get me her albums. Gretchen Parlato and that amazing backing band just gave me a mind-blowing piece. This was so beautiful... Jazz, soul...wow

    !Nat!

  • Thank you Mister Hancock. Hell of a song!

  • this is hot my fav version yet

  • that pianist. oh goodness all of them are amazing, really. but if i could have anybody's voice in the whole entire world, i would want gretchen's. and 5:30 is just amazing.

  • Mean piano chorus!!!!

  • She is a beast............ in a Good way

  • Just don't make NO SENSE to sing that good...

  • Damn sexy....

  • I love how she subtly adds a "moan" when she scats the main riff... so sexy...

  • there are few things more satisfying than good music.

  • Who in their right mind could dislike this? It must be the person would wants to be this good but can't lol

  • @MrCed001 there are a lot of people that want to be this good and aren't :)

  • thumbs up if you think the dildo who disliked this needs help.

  • precious day lights your way rest your wings stay awhile you're the sun in my sky butterfly you don't know the peace you bring you show me the secrets and the ways to love every moment of the day and flowers you kiss all come to light soaring wings rainbow waves touch my mind be so fine precious day lights your way rest your wings stay awhile to give all the love we knew to see all the light that we can see and teach all the children not to lie and maybe one day we'll fly

  • I think she's killer. She need a guitar player. Me!

  • Whats all this talk about Mark... sure he good but.. what about Eigsti?? he's lightning. you can barely even see his fingers when he solos 3:16

  • @Myoungejoe Agreed. As good as Mark is, Eigsti really blew me away with that solo. The whole song is fire, and I dare to say better than the one on her album
