  • I am sorry, but I did not watch the whole video. But from what I have seen of the both of you, YOU have definately got the right touch with her........ A JOB WELL DONE hon......keep up the fnie work...... :)

  • Most horses that I have seen always seem to have a problem having the saddle being put them....... I am impressed, you have really got a special touch with her...... GREAT JOB love..... :)

  • not the first backing....

  • She backs away from you because you have your core pointed in her face...She looks like a total sweetheart!

  • Great job! Iam about to break my horse this was very helpful thanks keep up the good work keep making these teaching videos. yours was good.

  • Thanks, I'm so glad that it was helpful to you. Good luck on breaking your horse, hope all goes well for you! :)

  • wow great job beautiful horse and well done

  • Thank you!

  • in the uk we mostly break horses in at 3 years

  • @coolcombination Same here. It depends on the horse but we usually break them in from 2-4yrs.

  • You both did great!!

Can I just use any reins for starters?

    ~Erika

  • Erika,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner! I have not logged into this account in forever.

Reins for starters is really all up to the trainer. We like to use something big and soft so that all the movements are almost over exaggerated for the horse to feel them better. Once a horse has learned things a little better than we w will switch over to a smaller, more fine tuned rein.

  • Wow.. she didn't just do 'good'... she was awesome for a first ride!!!!

  • Thanks, she trully is a wonderful horse.

  • Look at the horse's legs.......That will tell you most of it.....Feel the horse's reflexes that will help too..

  • your great, your horse is great. i know you started her at five, but everyone says i should start my yearling at 2, idk what i should do. I tried putting the saddel on her, but the girth was way too big, she did fine though, lol. Im not going to start her on a bit, but if i have to, it will be rubber, so it wont be to hard on her. This is my first time breaking a horse to. Any advise would be nice. Thanks

  • Well, for me, it depends on the horse. Some horses are ready at 2, some a little older. Misty was purchased as an un-broke 5yr old so thats why she was started so late in life. However, I usually like to break them @ 2-4yrs. Do your re-search before you really start to break her in, everyone likes different training methods, Sis & I really enjoy John Lyon's training method and would highly recomend that as a 'starter'. Feel free to write with questions as you continue to train your horse!

  • Thank you for your reply. And what im trying to do is gather bits and pieces of every other trainer, and go from there.

  • thank you, but i found out in june, that she will never be ridden. She has a curved spine, so im giving her to a theriputic place that will take care of her, and i will still be able to see her. I might get another but im not sure yet. Thanks for the advice though.

  • Most horses do best when started later. I started my first horse when he was 4, he did great, learned really quickly and was physically and mentally prepared for riding. Listen to wha you horse tells you, not other people. AGAIN do NOT start her just because someone says you need to. I have a 2 1/2 year old who won't be started till she is 3. She just hasn't filled out enough yet. I know a girl who started her horse before it was physically ready and totally stunted her horse's growth.

  • haha yeah sometimes they do that!

Glad that you enjoyed the video. Good luck with your 3yr old! Round pens are great for this kind of work, hope that you get yours soon!

  • Anyone can do anything that they put there mind to! Just as long as you take it SLOOOOW and have lots of patience. Don't expect to get out there and have your horse do everything in one day! This horse turned out amazing however when we set foot in the round pen all that we wanted to do that day was introduce the bit ... then when she took it so well we asked just one more thing of her and so on and so forth. Just as long as you take it SLOW, day by day, I'm sure that you can acomplish it.

  • i got the bit in my horses mouth the first try, then the next day... she said hell no..

this was great.. i totally enjoyed watching the video. i just hope i have this kind of luck with my 3yr old when i start training (i need a round pen yet)

  • amazingg!

  • this is all in one day? 0_0

the horse never had a rider, or saddle on its back.

then BAM! you throw a saddle on and hop on...

    and shes all good.

    god i envy you XD

  • yeah it takes time and patence and a little bit of some 'horse wispering ;)

but yeah it was all done in one day.

  • that's one smart horse

  • lol yeah your tellin me! a little to smart at times! :)

  • did you do that all in one day and how to you teach them that when you kick that means for them to walk

  • Yes from when we entered the round pen to when we left it took 1hr 15 min. As far as the kicking goes we find that it works best to teach your horse all the verbal cues for walk trot & canter before you ever mount. Then when mounted you use the verbal cues as well as your legs in a squeezing action to help it get the picture to move forward. We use kicking as a tool to help out green horses. Hope that this was of some help to you! If not than just shoot us a msg. ~SisterAct Equine

  • Hey thanks it really helped

  • Good I am glad that it was of some help to you!

  • WOW! That was the best training i had ever seen!

He did amazing under the saddle, and that was his first time!!!! how is she now?

do you have any recent vids of her

  • She is doing GREAT now! We have continued her training in western & trail as well as started some basic dressage. This summer we hope to introduce her to some fences and get her started on some jumping. She is a compleat BLAST to ride! She is a true Morgan who can do anything you ask her to.She is a really fun horse to ride and she has a very sweet personality. We don't have any other video's of her right now but hope to get some up this summer.

  • COOL!

IF you would, can you make some videos of you training her to jump? I wanted to teach my mare to, but i cant find a really good video teaching her.

And with the way you trained this girl i bet it would be perfact video!

  • Sure! We have been meaning to make a jumping video but have not taken the time to do it yet. I am the main huntseat/jumper rider and my sister is the western rider in our farm. Since my accedent back in may I have not been able to do any jumping until I heal all the way but we should be able to make the video by the end of summer.

  • YEA THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!

    I hope your back heals!

My moms BF mom had a back problem from falling of a horse. it was a long story that i just found out today.

AND THANKS! that would be so helpful!

  • your welcome :) we will see how it goes ... it may take me a while to get the video up! but as soon as I feel better we will get rolling on it.

  • ThANKS! again. Im very excited. Do you have any tips for me right now? I wont be back home for another couple months any way. FEEL BETTER! its not a life time injury is it? no reall badd damage?

  • Yes I do have a few tips however they won't fit in a comment :) It was a pretty bad accident. I landed on the concreat ... turned my legs into ground beef and the impacted vibrated up into my head giving me a severe cuncussion that lead to some bleeding in my brain. The Doc says no riding for a year or until my brin heals all the way. If I fall or bump my head I will #1-get brain damage #2-fall into a coma or #3-kick the bucket all together so uhh yeah it was pretty bad!!

  • but I have had worse before!

  • OMG! that sounded like it hurt!!!!

    HEAL UP GOOD!!!!

  • Wow I am very imprest! And this is all John Lyons?Amazing.

  • Thankyou. Yes this is John Lyons. My sister & I have enjoyed learning a few methods of training however we like John Lyons method the best. It seems to work so good with the horses. Misty was pretty much a text book case for us ... everything that happend in the film took about one hour 15 min. from when we entered the round pen to when we left.

  • she seems lke a very calm and dependable mare, aside from being beautiful.

  • thanks.

your observation is really very true

... she is such a wonderful horse to work with and be aound ... as well as being a very beautiful horse :) I am so glad that we happened opon her.

  • wow, I was impressed. I started a 3 yr old mare last year as well, it took me a lot longer to get up the nerve to get on the saddle though. but i am 49 yrs old, and just started riding 3 yrs ago.

  • Thanks. Misty is one incredible mare and (as you can see) was quite a text book case when it came to breaking ... she continues to learn in leaps and bounds with her training.

I hope that all goes well with your mare! I know that a person's age does play a huge part when it comes to breaking horses ... the body does not react as nicely to breaks and falls as time goes by :) If I were in your shoes ... I am sure that I would be a bit cautious as well :)~SisterAct Equine

  • I am getting a 2yr old filly that has only had 7 days under saddle, I am 14 and been riding avidly for 3 yrs and I can't wait to get on her. It is up to me to train her after those 7days with no ones help. I already have a 3yr old that I am training but he had 30 days and then another 30 but the trainer didn't do there job on the second 30. I guess I am just very stubborn and when people tell me I can't do it it just gives me more ambition to prove everyone wrong.

  • Well it sounds like you have alot of get up and go! It is not easy to train horses and exp. when one is so young :)

I hope that all goes well for you in your training!

So is training horses just a hobby of yours or do you want it to be a career one of these days?

  • I plan to continue training my horses but not as a career. I hope to go to college so I can be an equine and livestock vet.

  • Sounds like a good plan. The world needs some more good, strong equine vets out there.

I hope that all continues to go well with your horse training and vet plans :)

  • Thank you! :D

  • No problem. you can go see my horse and our work.

  • Nice job Done! I love how you worked with getting her use the the weight before getting on. Great Job! I own a two year old paint gelding and I'm starting him as well.

Once again, keep up the good work and have patience with her. :D
