i like both fast and slow, but i prefer slow. i feel and imagine a much more emotional and touching sensation and picture within my body and mind, and it all seems so much more precious.
i acquired Suites for Solo Cello Transcribed for Bb Trumpet by Jan Lichtmann. It's tough on trumpet because of range and breathing issues. (Range as in big interval jumps, not high notes) I couldn't believe i found that variation of it and i plan to work it until i've mastered it!
I prefer brisk tempi where possible. But I love this more leisurely tempo that seems to open up the melody. By far my favorite interpretation--I can't even listen to others.
"Why they are talking about one slower and one faster?"
I think because most cellists play this much faster than Fournier does. They whip right through it and miss all the gorgeous expressiveness of the melody and the key.
Which means they aren't virtuosi because it means "skill" and "excellence", if they posessed either they wouldn't just be powerplaying through it at mach5 while making it sound like crap in the meantime.
How could you be so narrow minded and judge a song like this??? Really !!! Its Beautiful just because it was was composed it a different tempo does not mean its not right!! Have respect for the music!!!!! just my 2cense (ask for change) lol
The Bach Cello Suites are considered to be open to interpretation. You are entitled to your own interpretation, just as the rest of us are entitled to judge your opinion of Fournier's. This is certainly not too slow, (in my opinion) if Bach had intended it to be played excessively fast, then he would have written the notes as 16th notes, or at least notated a faster tempo marking. (Or, Anna Magdalena would have done so in the manuscripts.)
I've heard it played fast and slow. I much prefer the slower tempo as I can enjoy the notes. Rushed they all blend together and the musicality is lost. Some things don't need to be rushed, slow down and enjoy.
@lilchibihanna I guess it is slower, but from the first time I heard it I've been blown away by the forward urgency of the phrasing. My absolutely favourite recording ever. (Although I respect Rostropovich, and Misha Maisky ain't chopped liver either.)
This is the non plus ultra version!!! by sure!!

There are so many different editions of the Bach suites, and we're stuck with Fournier? What's so great about him?

Thx for the video. It helped me finish the song on my Bass Guitar.

The geniuses of Bach and Fournier's interpretation makes for such a deeply spiritual experience, indelible after over 30 years of listening.

i've been trying to play this song, and i can pretty much get it, but my string crossings sound terrible. can someone help me?
Wafflesrdericious 2 years ago
You have to tilt your bow so that the distances between the strings are less. I was having the same problem, and that is the only solution.

The interpreter really feels the music, unlike all those virtuose players that just play it too fast with no feeling at all. Love it!
