Why did the "driver" (the one holding the stick in front) pull on the stick hard to the right? Is that perhaps why you "derailed"? I want to build something like that for myself, but I'm going to try putting real (lightweight) train wheels on an old quad with the front steering locked in place. Looks like fun!

And in point of fact, they derailed because of a stick on the track. That train can't weigh more than a few hundred pounds, you can hear someone saying "well, I guess we have to watch for stick now too" on the video. The wheels are so wide that it would take more than a little bit of wide gauge to derail it.
