  • Myachts just dont heave-to very well - Its trail and error - Basically what you did was right. MAybe try gradually pulling in the main to see if you slow further or speed up. One thing for certain - its not a car - you wont always be able to stop and step off and go shopping. MAny other factors such as your bimini , tides, wind speed ,inflatable stowed on deck, cockpit wind breakers, where people are positioned can effect the effeciency of heaving to.

  • heheh

  • Rediculous! You suppose to keep the main centered. Why are you teaching if you dont know what you are doing???

  • a tutorial where they dont really know what there doing. nice

  • Yes, I never boom the main all the way out. Keep it trimmed somewhat like you would on a broad reach and hard up the tiller or wheel and tie it in place. The vessel will continue to move at about 1 to 2 knots, but it is controllable and comfortable in a seaway.

  • I have found this to work best with some tension on the mainsheet. It also keeps the main from flapping in the wind. I can do this in my little dinghy with a daggerboard or my fixed keel boat.

  • It's good to practice heaving to so that this does NOT happen when you really need it. Also you do move a bit even when you are hove to, maybe a knot or two, it's more of a sideway motion. Traditionally the maneuver works best on boats with long keel.

  • Use your main to trim the balance as you steer into the wind (weather). You will still move a tiny bit.

Just try drawing your main in just slightly to get the balance that you need.

  • I would tend to bring the boom in just a tad bit for more balance between the two.

  • Did you figure out what was going wrong?
