We are very sad that after giving all the money asked.. you are still not able to complete it.. Before that we will inagurate our own carrier being built in our shipyard.. Still we value Indo-Russia good defence relation. as you were supporting us every bad time.
These are all temporary purchase made by the govt. They are building everything of their own... My home is next to ISRO Compound wall... God knows what the hell they do whole day and night. So much of heavy engine noise.
Amazing. India could have bought a brand new carrier, built to whatever specifications they wanted, for less money, than they're paying Russia for an outdated Cold War relic that's been rusting away for decades due to it being so ineffective in the current owner's navy. With all those years on the clock, it'll only make it two decades more at best, and I'd expect barely more than ten years service will actually come about. Could've done way better for the same cash...
@s2k997 Are you kidding me? They could never have built this ship and had its refit weapons and combat systems, for 2 bil dollars. The design and construction of the ship alone, without any of its systems would probably have exceeded 2 bil dollars! Then where would they have got the radars, ciws, decoys, jammers, secure communication systems, battle space control, engineering systems, and how much would THAT have cost? And then you have the issue of planes. Fully equipped PLUS Mig29k's for 2bil
@mattmatt115 But dear, it didn't cost 2 billion. That was a bait price, to get a large initial investment and then trap the Indians into continuing to pay more money while they tripled the price. Russia now wants $2.35 billion for just the carrier, never mind the planes. The planes will now have to be renegotiated outside of the deal. Originally the ship + upgrades was suppoed to be $800 million, the aircraft a seperate deal.
@mattmatt115 Also the price tag for the 29Ks and aircraft carrier is in excess of 3.5 billion, the Indias wish it still cost only 2. Russia wanted paying up front, and if they cancelled now they'd just keep the money, planes, and the carrier. Thus they're now continously getting more and more money dragged out of them for a 30 peice of junk, that costs more than three times what the two carriers India is building itself is costing, 750 million. Doesn't add up.
@mattmatt115 never say never. China bought rusty hall of unfinished Varyag carrier from Ukraine and refitted it itself to the first Chinese carrier. 45,000 tons displacement it is like USS Midway built in 1945 originally for propeller driven plains.

@mattmatt115 Sure You need to launch jets from a carrier which is not originally originally designed for this. I'm sure when they redesigned Midway they had the same challenges, but it was very long time ago.
@MaverickOOO1 lol...... Okay so Admiral Kuznetsov is a Midway? Its not say, a refinement of Kiev, which was a huge refinement over Moskva? No thats nonesense its a copy of Midway of course
Right...... I guess Charles De Gaulle is also a copy of midway, or is it a copy of essex, or a scaled down copy of nimitz? Right? Now what is Invicible class a copy of Kiev? Or midway? or wow wait a minute... a refined idea perhaps? No, impossible! Refinement is only allowed in the USA, right? LOL
I'm just trying to find something compatible by displacement and history of modernization.
Midway entered San Francisco Bay Naval Shipyard for a massive modernization which proved to be very expensive and controversial. The flight deck was enlarged the elevators were enlarged, relocated, and given almost double the weight capacity. Midway also received new catapults, arresting gear. Massive cost overruns raised the price of this program from $88 million to $202 million .
@mattmatt115 It will be miracle if this modification is a success. Only operational Russian carrier "Kuznetsov" is in a state of flux spending more time in North fleet naval yard for fixing multiple problems than during actually deployment and according to latest information it is going to "Sevmash" for another set of modifications like installing a catapult and a reactor after Vikramaditya is out. It will be just a testbed for Russian shipbuilders to nourish the skills at somebody's expense.
@TheYozStudios Hindus would be a lot of happier to get a retiring US carrier Kitty Hawk than this Russian piece of junk, but it is out of question to sell somebody carrier later than Forestall evenly as a scrape metal. I'm sure can let Russians to inspect a carrier to get an idea how it was built. So, they stuck with this russian baby.
Wow, the Indians got snookered on this one! All that money to buy a used ship, carrier planes, and operations knowledge from a country that has never been able to figure out carrier operations. Hundreds of millions of dollars over budget, years late...not to mention that fact that the ship will be 30 years old before it even enters Indian service. I wonder who got bribbed on this deal?

Is it true that the smallest of 10 US carriers now operational is considerably larger than the largest foreign carrier currently afloat?

It was also found that the modifications significantly reduced the ship's seakeeping capabilities and ability to conduct air operations in rough seas

@MaverickOOO1 Modifications of this scale have, i dont think ever, improved the sea keeping abilities of any military vessel.
