My new western horse and I are getting ready for the 2012 show season. I've been riding him for the past 2 weeks and he's doing great! Class A's and Region 14 here we come!
@Prowinda Thank you !! I do not have a vdeo to post, but there is a video of me riding my three year old in a bridleless lesson! Search up Emily Levesque, and I should be the first video !! She is a quarter horse that I plan to show at the Congress next year !
@QH1100 Thanks for your comment, but to let you know those dragging tails are REAL not fake its against the rules in the Arabian Horse breed to have fake tails. The breed characteristic is to allow the tails to grow natural long and following, minus some disciplines like reining and dressage/jumping they trim them for safety of horse and rider during competition.
@Prowinda WOW! I would have never thought that - especially with the prevalence of using those hidious things in many venues today... I guess you have to protect the tail a lot for them to grow that long. I personally think it's excess to have horses tails dragging like that - & doesn't really look good - but a natural tail that just barely touches the ground while at rest (that obviously lifts of the ground & flows beautifully while they're working) is absolutely beautiful!
@Prowinda & just so you know, I didn't mean "not real collection" in a negetive manner: I should have said complete collection... As a dressage rider, when I think true or "complete" collection, I think along the lines of passage & piaffe - lots of lift & suspension & total engagement. But ANY GOOD WP horse needs a degree of collection - meaning hind end engagement - but with min suspension. So it's not technically "all the way" collection. These folks actually do WP very well.
@QH1100 The one WP Arab I worked with was actually a dream to ride in his "collected jog" & WP frame - enough collection to be comfortable, but not overbearing - - but that horse sure as heck did have the potential to put that hind engine into over-drive to show off his natural suspension & full collection, & I told the owner for that reason if she wanted to kick it up a notch he would have been a great dressage Arab!!!
@QH1100 Thanks for the great comment! I ride mostly English (Saddle Seat) type Arabians & National Show Horses now, probably because I love that hind end engine in over-drive with high forward motion.
@Prowinda If you want to experience real good & true hind engine action, you need to learn dressage! All english disciplines are more "forward" than western, but saddle seat does ask for a lot of wasted action (such as the higher step & such). With dressage, you can get that higher knee action in complete collection with forward motion that just feels awesome. When learning dressage, & you have that "a-ha moment" where it all clicks, you'll become addicted!! (LOL)....
@Prowinda ....I grew up being trained for the hunter/jumper circuit for 10 years when I was a kid. As a young adult, I decided to diversify, & rode under a cowboy to learn cutting for a while, & then also took lessons in saddle seat on Morgans. Then a few years ago I decided to cross train my western QH myself (with help of pro coaching) for some light dressage showing - since then, I'm addicted to the discipline (& the "art") of dressage like no other I ever have!
@Prowinda BTW, I've also known some National Show Horses to become beautiful lighter dressage horses! -And I've heard that Sadddlebreds can make really awesome (& comfortable riding!) dressage horses, as well (but have never personally seen or known any dressage Saddlebreds). And, of course Arabs have potential, but the appearance of over-flexion in the neck, though natural for them, can be a hinderance/ fault in judge's eye (but aren't the big Arab shows having dressage tests now?)
@QH1100 Yes, we do have dressage shows and classes at our Class A shows for the Dressage, its part of our Sport Horse division, its actually very large it host its own separate nationals from the other performance divisions. Where you out of????
@Prowinda Past 3 years I've lived in south Texas, which is soooo not horse country around these parts of TX. You see, I'm military, so I've lived all over the continental US. But I've been so fortunate to be all over the country & see/experience all kinds of breeds, horse sports, & disciplines! I try to keep an open mind to all disciplines that do not include horse abuse in training practice; but I can tell by comments on YouTube there are many ignorarnts only into their own thing!
@QH1100 I totally understand! In fact when I was 6 and just started taking lessons, it was from a Quarter Horse Trainer. His way of getting me to understand forward motion was very similar.
Perhaps rollkur type training was used to produce some of these horses, but I see no rollkur in this particular video. Rollkur suggests that coercive riding is used to put the horse's head far behind the vertical. I don't see any coercive riding occuring here. In my work as a dressage trainer, I can tell you that it can be extremely diffucult to keep an Arabian horse in front of the vertical (though I always try to) because the shape of their neck is so different than than other breeds.
@BizStamm Ahmen! I ride dressage & have worked with an Arab in dressage, & have also worked with an Arab WP show horse, as well. They do not use rolkur on these horses, but you are so ever correct: The way these horses are built it is natural for them to over-flex their necks (even when not under saddle or engaged), & even get behind the vertical when they're actuallly on the bit. If Arab riders DON'T ride with light hands/contact, they're going to have a major prob with their horse.
@Prowinda I am a new professional and am currently working out of a barn that trains many western pleasure Arabs and half Arabs. There are definitely differences between dressage and western pleasure, but many of the underlying concepts such as hind end strength and self-carriage are consistent between the disciplines.
@Prowinda ...I was being sarcastic. Sorry but I'm not a huge fan of western in other breeds than AQHA, but that's because they are all so uncontrolled, and that is not a pleasure to ride. This is pretty good though, I was impressed. Maybe I am not seeing something, but since their reins are so tight I cannot tell if they are simply sucking them back or holding them back from running away.
@AQHAluverr I rode Quarter Horses many years ago, don't know much about the judging and what is standard for the breed, do you have a video you can send as a video response, I'm sure other viewers would like to see the comparison as well. I'll video response a more recent HD quality western class from the Arabian breed!
There is the danger of rollkur in this video, maybe that is one of the desgressions that are taking place in the quarter hosre and arabian worlds.
Some Arabians are ridden with there noses past the virtical (noses near or even touching the chest) this causes pain to the horse and developes bone splints on the crown of the horse. Some see it as a form of abuse.
I am an Arabian person and I will say this is a nice video. And Western Pleasure in Any breed, QH, Arabian, Andalusian, they are all wonderful to me to watch. Each one is SOOO different I love it.
Hello, can somebody tell me the proper term for they way the Arabian holds their head in western pleasure? The people at my barn tell me it's on the bit but I have also been told that term is used in dressage. Thanks for your help!!
the way the arabs hold their heads is a form of collection, the curb bit which most use on advanced horses isn't what make the horses head collect. You can make an arabs head collect and any horses really something as simple as a snaffle or hackamore. It's merely years of training that brings on this type of collection. not just in the head but throughout the body as well. Horses cannot hold the this type head collection for a period of time without having achieved collection in the body also.
well that is so cool they hold there heads nice and low beautiful great but i just cant get over how big a gap is at there mane up to there forlock lol but there very cool
Arabs look ok in Western Pleasure, but I have never been a fan of them in the western ring. I am a QH girl, but it is nice to see different breeds compeating all over the place though!
I would like to say that most horse breeds come from arab blood lines. atleast they are a true breed, your qh, paints and appys can have any or all three of those breeds in them. l love my arabs and i also have qh and paints. a good horse is a good horse no matter what breed they are
I'm partial to both breeds. My first horse was an arab, though I've always ridden QH. Only breed I think is kinda funky is the Saddlebred, but that's just me, so any saddlebred people out there, don't get ur panties in a wad! I'm just stating my opinion!
Regardless of the breed these horses look nice because they have developed self carriage. So many western pleasure horses look like their riding is holding them up straight.
arab show and qh show do have diff standards, thats why the headsets are diff, and i personally dont like arabs just cuz they can tend to be ancy, but i do love to watch them show cuz they have such animation like saddlebreds (another breed i personally dont like, but they move nice)
i ride in quarter horse shows...so this is probibly a werid question but is that a natural head set for an arab horse, it just way different from the head set for a aqha pleasure horse head set....just a thought. are there different things the judges look for in arab pleasure shes or something
Arabians are a lot hotter than Quarter Horses are, so it's harder to keep them from taking off and they have to hold the face more. But I would say this is the same as our head set, just with Arabian tendencies and anatomy. This is "head down" for them. Check out the Friesian "western plelasure" LOL!
These horses are so good! I prefer these arabians in pleasure, than i do the QH or Paint horses... they look kind of dead, but the arabians still keep their natural gaits to some extent.
Did it ever occur to you that it`s an open world, and people have free thought? You`re actually allowed to have your own opinion... or can you just not stand that people think on their own?
some peoples opinions are just full of crap but i do understand that these arabs look fantastic to some of u and that is ur opinion just saying that qh r half dead and in pain pisses me off
did i say they look in pain? No... And i`m sorry that u feel the need to take offence to other peoples opinion, ever tried to just back off and ignore? As long as you know what u think off it thats great, no? Not everyone thinks the way you do, and i do not think these horses are fantastic i find the way they hold their heads totally off. In that way QH and Paints are more natural to me allot of times in WP. But i do not like their gaits, THATS my personal opinion.
No worries, i didnt take offence, i understand if u feel strongly about it. But people always have their own thoughts and ideas, that doesnt make their own opinions rubish. It`s just how they see it and think of it. I was the only one in a school of 350 students riding western, or trying too, so ull get used to ignoring people. =)
What's with the green dirt? I've never seen that before! At first I thought it was artificial turf but it appears to move like sand. Does anyone know what it is?
If you think that's "galloping around" then you need to check out the Arabian Costume Classes. Oh, and they asked for a hand gallop which is customary in the Western Classes per the USEF rule book.
u really think pleasure horses look like there in pain oh other breeds think they can do western but if u wanna see real western see some quarter horses doing it AND THEY DO NOT LOOK LIKE THEY R IN PAIN U HAV KNOW CLUE
Do you know the definition of being collected? Or the definition of a pleasure horse? It's certanitly not to looked drugged like they do now-a-days. Do some resarch.
I have no idea about western so just a few questions... Why is it so desireable to have such long tails?
I read why the jog is so slow as its smooth but why is the lope so slow also?
and... How are the horses trained to go in such a frame on such a loose rein or is it just because of the long shanks on the bits that they only need such a light contact??
The long tails mostly represent the beauty of the breed and they keep it long cause it's just pretty to watch and look at.
there are several different ways to teach the horse to do it. Some people are more harsher than others, but the way I was taught was the horse is trained to keep it's head down by a tie down and that already slows down the gait. Then the owner gets the horse to work off spurs instead and keeps close rein and as time goes on, that stuff wont' be needed.
arabs are known for their manes and tails. they're just beautiful if theyre long and lucious.
their lope is just slow becaus its pleasure, they are trained 4 slow gaits.
they set their head on a loose rein for a few reasons. some people (even though illegal) use weighted reins to pull their heads down. and arab bits have a high port in the bit, which hits the roof of their mouth if you pull up on the reins. it does not always hit the roof, only when you ask them to tuck their heads.
@Justan3xcuse ok i asked that same question years ago about the lope and jog what I got is that cowboys and the horses they rode had to lope or "canter" for a long time so they trained their horses to lope slow and comfortable so their energy dousent get used up. same with the jog. now it is just neccesary for shows and stuff since most western horses arent actually cow horses.
There's nothing wrong with a horse that's a true pleasure to ride with a lovely walk jog and lope, but western pleasure as a show class has just lost its way for some decades now. The judges in general only reward those who could roll peanuts with their lips to the ground, and who are going so slow they are stumbling over themselves. My gripe goes across breeds, but the AQHA types started this nonsense. Western pleasure has lost its way and has no basis in real movements anymore.
@4x4Girl14 hey im sorry but if you pay more attention to quarter horse western pleasure you would realize that its not all crippled looking. i have to admit, some trainers do make the horses look crippled, but thats no excuse to call quarter horse western in general crippled. watch this video- AQHA SELECT WORLD SHOW WESTERN PLEASURE 2008. look at how natural this horse's gates are and then say that quarter horse WP is crippled!
@rideforlyfe426 I watched that aqha world show but did not see any natural gaits. You have to remember that western pleasure gaits are a trained, natural means occurring in nature. If it was just natural there would be no need to train it.
thank u lovely person below me(: we are avid qh ppl n i am currently trying to qualify for qh world n my moms best friend has arabians n on the weekends we dnt have a circuit 400 miles away we kick back and trail ride with them WE ADORE HER ARABS!
Why is it that on every horse video people get snotty about their breed or discipline? Arab people attacking QH people, then the same defensive QH people attack Arab people. Can't we just enjoy the beauty of each differed breed? Nice vid, always wondered what Arab WP was like. It's nice, LOVE LOVE LOVEEE THE TAILS! Good horses in a good video.
@KadajsKatana8902 you make a reallyy good point. Arab people are always saying that there horses look more beutiful then quarter horses. The qh people (me) are always saying that there necks look weird or that it dosent look natural
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@KadajsKatana8902 You'd be able to enjoy one breed over/similarly to another if one breed wasn't trying to emulate another. The Arabian breed, in the modern sense, is little more than a bastardization of what it once was. The Western and EP dicisions are great examples. AVOID ARABS AT ALL COSTS!!!! They are little more than hopefuls. They cannot compete!
@JustHorsinAround24 But sadly I do. Compare your original imports to the US to your now Middle Eastern exports. The two share few 'phenotypical' similarities. It is fair to say that the modern Western horses emulate the QH and the modern saddleseat horses emulate the Saddlebred. Further, if one is to look at the reining horses they look amazingly like QHs.
Beyond that the AHA is slowly dying, the small shows are slowly dying, and without question the membership of the breed is dying.
@dirtyproduction western is a style of riding! just like english! it douse not belong to one breed. You can have a thourghbred or even a big shire riding western just like you see quater horses performing in english. the quater horses are the most popular in the western ring, today. but the next most popular horse is the arabian. look it up!
@JustHorsinAround24 You're young, I assume. My point was not to discuss disciplines. My point was to discuss the breeding shed due to a discipline; more accurately, the results therefrom. Today's Arabian horse breeders aim to mimic the horses of other breed who excel in certain disciplines. I referenced those breeds below.
Let's then move to halter. (Move and halter - HAHA) Let's take two National Champion Halter Stallions and compare them: Bask and Magnum Psyche See my point
@dirtyproduction douse it matter what they look like? arabians are arabians. they all still have great heart and stamina. so your little comment on avoiding arabians is simply stupid. because some might not have the"ideal" conformation. but thats not all what matters.
@JustHorsinAround24 Yes. Well, I don't think it matters how much heart an Arabian has if he is broken down due to extreme clubbed feet. You're defending the breed because of your heart and not your head.
Regardless, that doesn't go to any of my points. The fact remains there are a great number of truly great Arabians, but the breed, and the vast majority of the horses within its ranks, aren't anything to write home about.
@dirtyproduction ok. I wont deny that i love arabians just like i love every other horse breed. but my arabian horse douse not have clubbed feet at all, and he is 100 % arabian so some arabians might have that but not all. just like every other horse breed.
@JustHorsinAround24 Look at your Arabian National Halter Champions for the past decade or so. Halter is the premier example of conformation, after all. I have several Arabians in my pastures that don't have clubbed feet. I understand your point. However, the premier examples of your breed lack the 'legs' to stand on.
@KadajsKatana8902 this is my freind youtube acount but my other freind and i bolth have arabs and at the fair a girl with a Qh glared at us beacause she hates arabs!!!!!!!!! it was so rude!!!!!
@KadajsKatana8902 I agree with you 100% - but unfortunately you see that in any equestrian discipline, and its a shame, truly is... with the right amount and proper amount of training, any horse can do the any discipline. but mind you, some horses can not as well as others - due to breeding and conformation etc. - but this does not mean they cant do it all together!!!! And people have to come to terms and understands this...
And that where you get this big lanky draft horse and compete with the QH, Arab. if the draft wins, then point and laugh at the ppl who thinks their horses are better (in yer case QH vs Arab). Every horse is special and, has their own character and has their own sense of beauty. different judges has their own taste. The owners can just shove it. lol.
@kmich210 I was at a show once where it was primarily Arabs and QH and then a mule....and the mule was kicking ass! lol. So yea, it is just a matter of whether or not the breed is performing the best in comparison to it's own standard.
It is very disrespectful when you call QH's ungly. their are alot of peple who would disagree with you. I personally have no problem with arabs, Although i have had my fair share with some crazy ones does not mean i am going to diss them, especially when i know their are people out there who would be very insulted by what you said. Think before you speak
um okay. Quarter horses are not suppose to rock back and fourth judges do not favour this. The headset is suppose to be level with the top line. I have to say if you dont like people dissing your breed dont diss theirs. You are right every breed has a different standard. and arabs are much much different from quarter horses in many ways. .
actually in western pleasure the head set is suppose to be lower than the withers but it can't me so low that the ears are lower than the withers! when a headset is suppse to be level with the top line is hunter under saddle!!
and quarter horses don't rock back and fourth, some do, but the ones that don't are worth alot more money and always place higher!!
no they arent. i show hunter. they are suppose to have the head set same level with the top line, i have shown big breed shows also and that has alwyas been how it is
Wow Morgan and Ayymkatee, if you guys show completely different breeds, with different standards, then why isn't it okay that the Arab has a different standard as well?
All these horses have their heads behind the vertical. I think this overflexed headset is worse than the Quarter horse one, when are you ever going to see a horse with it's head like that in the wild. Oh and need I remind you the current quarter horse head set in way better than it used to be. I'm just saying stop dissing on QH's because arab's headsets are just as "unnatural".
that is how they are trained. just like qh have low headsets. every breed is different. i don't diss either because my horse is arab x appendix and he shows both ways. walk and jog are qh style, lope and hand gallop is arab style. just how he was trained
@poketehfreakencow um no not all headsets are unatural i have an arab and a qhater horse whos "natural headset" is what the western headset is. You wnt to see a unatural headset look at the english horses. Im not saying its a bad headset it just trained to do it. If you look at them out of the saddle they have their heads low.
@JustHorsinAround24 just an observation, but I have seen several English pleasures horse when turned loose carry their heads high.If you want to see an example look up Hucks Connection V's performance in liberty at 2010 Scottsdale Arabian show(he has a video on Youtube). Every horse should have a head set according to their conformation. If you want to see an unnatural headset take a WP horse and put an english headset on it or a english horse with a WP headset, that would be unnatural.
I show my AQHA in western pleasure and I like the Arabian lope better. The regular western pleasure lope seems too fake and robotic, I can't stand it. At least even an untrained eye can tell an Arabian is loping.
All breeds have the right and the ability to do whatever discipline they like [except big lick twh, that's disgusting]. If you don't like it, get over it.
AQHA's don't all have fat necks bodies and don't look good....wehn they do thats just called bad blood lines, or its there breed like that to be stocky and go in like halter classes!!! thats why most quarter horses are appendix (half qh half thoughbred)
A true western lope? are you kidding me. qhat do you want the arabian to be going up and down like a rocking horse with a broken leg? because thats what your ugly and heck Quarter horses do!!
i hate arabians doing western pleasure. there neck is just bowed in!!! so UGLY!!! i prefer qh western pleasure.. its alot prettier and qh dont look like there lame when cantering.. thats just the way they move!!
I totally agree with you guys! Arabs should NOT be doing western pleasure! I love to watch AQH's and APH's doing western pleasure! I love to show WP to but not on anything else except for Quarter Horses and Paints. I seriously don't see how people can think arabians look good doing this! Their headset is sooooo ugly!
Arabs look good doing this because you can see the true athleticism. Everyone of of these horses is lifting through it shoulders and midsection and using almost every muscle in its body. The headset is one of the most natural I've seen from any breed. I would rather see an animal that is carrying itself with a natural lift through its shoulder and neck than dragging itself around a ring by its front end with its nose almsot touching the ground.
Arabians are one of the best breeds for WP. Quarter horses have an extreamly unnatural headset. Also when you ugle horses carry themselves they really rock back and forth, like there having trouble picking themselves off the ground.
the neck is also a sign of grace. If you were some hot shot wouldnt you want you neck bowed or would you want it down at you feet like you look sick! (thats a quasrter horse)
The Arabian Nationals in Tulsa, OK was a huge disappointment. Lots of birdboned & ugly dragon snouted Arabians with their eyes shaved/oiled b/c they think the judges are too stupid to see the eye. I witnessed Trainers coaching AOTR (Amateur Owners to Ride) from the sidelines dureing the reining class and the judges and steward just sat up there in their little box and let them do it without disqualifying the rider and the trainer. It really was sick and a sad shame. They were cheating - SHAME
okay, so I know this sounds stupid, but are those their NATURAL tails, or are those clip-on/braid-in tail extensions? Sorry, but I've just never known. If they ARE natural, how do you get them to grow so long???
they are real tails , how you get them long is by keep them up in vet wrap and everymonth re- due and when how time is you wash the heck out of the horse and the tail . I show a mare that has a tail draging about 2 feet on the floor and when i ride her she lifts her own tail . QH has the loser tails .I show western !!!
Morgan, the Arab should be shown naturally, so that's why there are no fake tails. The only place it "really" matters is the in-hand classes. Other then that, there is just a lot of pride in a long mane and tail. That's why all of the disciplines grow them out.
Arabians and QHs or Paints are totally different types of horses. I don't see why people expect the Arabs to move just like QHs, and why the QH people have to come here and bash the Arabs...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Omg I can not stand the way arabians move srry to every one who lovees them but it is somthing that i just cant take. And this is why I show my quarter horse/paint horse copy.
i like how Arabians move better, Quarter Horses sometimes look like they are in pain when they lope.....it is so slow. Not saying all are like that but at many QH shows they go so slow. These arabs move at the lope and trot and have pretty arches in there necks, and have beautiful conformations! :) Don't get me wrong I love QHs really, I just like how arabs show in Western Pleasure!
Your right in some ways. I perfer the quarter horse look...if they are trained properly they wont look like they are in pain. haha. but yeah, some look like their knees are broken!
My new western horse and I are getting ready for the 2012 show season. I've been riding him for the past 2 weeks and he's doing great! Class A's and Region 14 here we come!

Prowinda 1 month ago
@BizStamm Ahmen! I ride dressage & have worked with an Arab in dressage, & have also worked with an Arab WP show horse, as well. They do not use rolkur on these horses, but you are so ever correct: The way these horses are built it is natural for them to over-flex their necks (even when not under saddle or engaged), & even get behind the vertical when they're actuallly on the bit. If Arab riders DON'T ride with light hands/contact, they're going to have a major prob with their horse.
QH1100 3 weeks ago
@Prowinda I am a new professional and am currently working out of a barn that trains many western pleasure Arabs and half Arabs. There are definitely differences between dressage and western pleasure, but many of the underlying concepts such as hind end strength and self-carriage are consistent between the disciplines.
BizStamm 1 month ago

Hello, can somebody tell me the proper term for they way the Arabian holds their head in western pleasure? The people at my barn tell me it's on the bit but I have also been told that term is used in dressage. Thanks for your help!!
BayArabian 11 months ago
the way the arabs hold their heads is a form of collection, the curb bit which most use on advanced horses isn't what make the horses head collect. You can make an arabs head collect and any horses really something as simple as a snaffle or hackamore. It's merely years of training that brings on this type of collection. not just in the head but throughout the body as well. Horses cannot hold the this type head collection for a period of time without having achieved collection in the body also.

I would like to say that most horse breeds come from arab blood lines. atleast they are a true breed, your qh, paints and appys can have any or all three of those breeds in them. l love my arabs and i also have qh and paints. a good horse is a good horse no matter what breed they are
rodeomom100 1 year ago
I'm partial to both breeds. My first horse was an arab, though I've always ridden QH. Only breed I think is kinda funky is the Saddlebred, but that's just me, so any saddlebred people out there, don't get ur panties in a wad! I'm just stating my opinion!
MysweetAnnabelle53 1 year ago
arabs look real pretty western :) but every horse can look good with proper training.
equestrianfanatic26 1 year ago
Regardless of the breed these horses look nice because they have developed self carriage. So many western pleasure horses look like their riding is holding them up straight.

my god even the arabs have succumed to the horrible lame mechanical crappy lope.

arab show and qh show do have diff standards, thats why the headsets are diff, and i personally dont like arabs just cuz they can tend to be ancy, but i do love to watch them show cuz they have such animation like saddlebreds (another breed i personally dont like, but they move nice)
tmustang94 1 year ago
i ride in quarter horse shows...so this is probibly a werid question but is that a natural head set for an arab horse, it just way different from the head set for a aqha pleasure horse head set....just a thought. are there different things the judges look for in arab pleasure shes or something
0purple0oranges0 1 year ago
Arabians are a lot hotter than Quarter Horses are, so it's harder to keep them from taking off and they have to hold the face more. But I would say this is the same as our head set, just with Arabian tendencies and anatomy. This is "head down" for them. Check out the Friesian "western plelasure" LOL!

westernpleasuresarah 2 years ago
did i say they look in pain? But i do not like their gaits, THATS my personal opinion.

some drop dead sexy arabians.. such a nice class
ALYJOMOFO 2 years ago
I have no idea about western so just a few questions... Why is it so desireable to have such long tails?
I read why the jog is so slow as its smooth but why is the lope so slow also?
and... How are the horses trained to go in such a frame on such a loose rein or is it just because of the long shanks on the bits that they only need such a light contact??
Justan3xcuse 2 years ago
The long tails mostly represent the beauty of the breed and they keep it long cause it's just pretty to watch and look at.
there are several different ways to teach the horse to do it. Some people are more harsher than others, but the way I was taught was the horse is trained to keep it's head down by a tie down and that already slows down the gait. Then the owner gets the horse to work off spurs instead and keeps close rein and as time goes on, that stuff wont' be needed.
raphfreak101 2 years ago
justan:
arabs are known for their manes and tails. they're just beautiful if theyre long and lucious.
their lope is just slow becaus its pleasure, they are trained 4 slow gaits.
they set their head on a loose rein for a few reasons. some people (even though illegal) use weighted reins to pull their heads down. and arab bits have a high port in the bit, which hits the roof of their mouth if you pull up on the reins. it does not always hit the roof, only when you ask them to tuck their heads.
lilgymnastbabi33 2 years ago
@Justan3xcuse ok i asked that same question years ago about the lope and jog what I got is that cowboys and the horses they rode had to lope or "canter" for a long time so they trained their horses to lope slow and comfortable so their energy dousent get used up. same with the jog. now it is just neccesary for shows and stuff since most western horses arent actually cow horses.
JustHorsinAround24 1 year ago
There's nothing wrong with a horse that's a true pleasure to ride with a lovely walk jog and lope, but western pleasure as a show class has just lost its way for some decades now. The judges in general only reward those who could roll peanuts with their lips to the ground, and who are going so slow they are stumbling over themselves. My gripe goes across breeds, but the AQHA types started this nonsense. Western pleasure has lost its way and has no basis in real movements anymore.
cyberg00se 2 years ago
These tails are all real too!
LeeAnne151 2 years ago
what gait is this in the beginning? looks like a mixture of trot and walk.
For what is it used - not to panic the cows in the field??? Look terrible.
arabianlover2 2 years ago
It's called a jog... basically it's a slow short stride trot. It's extremely smooth and comfortable to ride, so don't knock it till you've tried it.

@4x4Girl14 hey im sorry but if you pay more attention to quarter horse western pleasure you would realize that its not all crippled looking. i have to admit, some trainers do make the horses look crippled, but thats no excuse to call quarter horse western in general crippled. watch this video- AQHA SELECT WORLD SHOW WESTERN PLEASURE 2008. look at how natural this horse's gates are and then say that quarter horse WP is crippled!
rideforlyfe426 1 year ago
@rideforlyfe426 I watched that aqha world show but did not see any natural gaits. You have to remember that western pleasure gaits are a trained, natural means occurring in nature. If it was just natural there would be no need to train it.

Why is it that on every horse video people get snotty about their breed or discipline? Arab people attacking QH people, then the same defensive QH people attack Arab people. They cannot compete!
dirtyproduction 1 year ago
@dirtyproduction that is sucha stupid thing to say. You obviously dont know what you are talking about.
JustHorsinAround24 1 year ago
@JustHorsinAround24 But sadly I do. Compare your original imports to the US to your now Middle Eastern exports. The two share few 'phenotypical' similarities. It is fair to say that the modern Western horses emulate the QH and the modern saddleseat horses emulate the Saddlebred. Further, if one is to look at the reining horses they look amazingly like QHs.
Beyond that the AHA is slowly dying, the small shows are slowly dying, and without question the membership of the breed is dying.
dirtyproduction 1 year ago
@dirtyproduction western is a style of riding! just like english! it douse not belong to one breed. You can have a thourghbred or even a big shire riding western just like you see quater horses performing in english. the quater horses are the most popular in the western ring, today. but the next most popular horse is the arabian. look it up!
JustHorsinAround24 1 year ago
@JustHorsinAround24 You're young, I assume. My point was not to discuss disciplines. My point was to discuss the breeding shed due to a discipline; more accurately, the results therefrom. Today's Arabian horse breeders aim to mimic the horses of other breed who excel in certain disciplines. I referenced those breeds below.
Let's then move to halter. (Move and halter - HAHA) Let's take two National Champion Halter Stallions and compare them: Bask and Magnum Psyche See my point
dirtyproduction 1 year ago
@dirtyproduction douse it matter what they look like? arabians are arabians. they all still have great heart and stamina. so your little comment on avoiding arabians is simply stupid. because some might not have the"ideal" conformation. but thats not all what matters.
JustHorsinAround24 1 year ago
@JustHorsinAround24 Yes. Well, I don't think it matters how much heart an Arabian has if he is broken down due to extreme clubbed feet. You're defending the breed because of your heart and not your head.
Regardless, that doesn't go to any of my points. The fact remains there are a great number of truly great Arabians, but the breed, and the vast majority of the horses within its ranks, aren't anything to write home about.
dirtyproduction 1 year ago
@dirtyproduction ok. I wont deny that i love arabians just like i love every other horse breed. but my arabian horse douse not have clubbed feet at all, and he is 100 % arabian so some arabians might have that but not all. just like every other horse breed.
JustHorsinAround24 1 year ago
@JustHorsinAround24 Look at your Arabian National Halter Champions for the past decade or so. Halter is the premier example of conformation, after all. I have several Arabians in my pastures that don't have clubbed feet. I understand your point. However, the premier examples of your breed lack the 'legs' to stand on.
dirtyproduction 1 year ago
@dirtyproduction ok, they may have clubbed feet but they are only a small percent of arabians. while u said avoid ALL arbians!

And people have to come to terms and understands this...
tucker72100 1 year ago
@KadajsKatana8902
And that where you get this big lanky draft horse and compete with the QH, Arab. if the draft wins, then point and laugh at the ppl who thinks their horses are better (in yer case QH vs Arab). Every horse is special and, has their own character and has their own sense of beauty. different judges has their own taste. The owners can just shove it. lol.
kmich210 1 year ago
@kmich210 I was at a show once where it was primarily Arabs and QH and then a mule....and the mule was kicking ass! lol. So yea, it is just a matter of whether or not the breed is performing the best in comparison to it's own standard.

It is very disrespectful when you call QH's ungly. their are alot of peple who would disagree with you. I personally have no problem with arabs, Although i have had my fair share with some crazy ones does not mean i am going to diss them, especially when i know their are people out there who would be very insulted by what you said. Think before you speak
Hoskins011 2 years ago
um okay. Quarter horses are not suppose to rock back and fourth judges do not favour this. The headset is suppose to be level with the top line. I have to say if you dont like people dissing your breed dont diss theirs. You are right every breed has a different standard. and arabs are much much different from quarter horses in many ways. .
Hoskins011 2 years ago
actually in western pleasure the head set is suppose to be lower than the withers but it can't me so low that the ears are lower than the withers! when a headset is suppse to be level with the top line is hunter under saddle!!
and quarter horses don't rock back and fourth, some do, but the ones that don't are worth alot more money and always place higher!!
MorganRichey08 2 years ago
in hunter the head set is higher than the withers, but not as high as the gaited horses.
its huntseat where the headset is level with the top line.

Oh and BTW nice tails :D
poketehfreakencow 2 years ago
thank you!! if anyone hasn't notice western pleasure is completly unnatural for ALL breeds! yyou will never see a horse in the wild joging!
MorganRichey08 2 years ago
that is how they are trained. just like qh have low headsets. every breed is different. i don't diss either because my horse is arab x appendix and he shows both ways. walk and jog are qh style, lope and hand gallop is arab style. just how he was trained
equestrienne17 2 years ago
That headset is extremely nautal for an arabian, just BTW
AmberElaine0824 2 years ago
@poketehfreakencow um no not all headsets are unatural i have an arab and a qhater horse whos "natural headset" is what the western headset is. You wnt to see a unatural headset look at the english horses. Im not saying its a bad headset it just trained to do it. If you look at them out of the saddle they have their heads low.
JustHorsinAround24 1 year ago
@JustHorsinAround24 just an observation, but I have seen several English pleasures horse when turned loose carry their heads high.If you want to see an example look up Hucks Connection V's performance in liberty at 2010 Scottsdale Arabian show(he has a video on Youtube). Every horse should have a head set according to their conformation. If you want to see an unnatural headset take a WP horse and put an english headset on it or a english horse with a WP headset, that would be unnatural.
LuckyCloverLeaf04 1 year ago
I show my AQHA in western pleasure and I like the Arabian lope better. The regular western pleasure lope seems too fake and robotic, I can't stand it. At least even an untrained eye can tell an Arabian is loping.
All breeds have the right and the ability to do whatever discipline they like [except big lick twh, that's disgusting]. If you don't like it, get over it.

angelaubree 2 years ago
Arabs look good doing this because you can see the true athleticism. Everyone of of these horses is lifting through it shoulders and midsection and using almost every muscle in its body. The headset is one of the most natural I've seen from any breed. I would rather see an animal that is carrying itself with a natural lift through its shoulder and neck than dragging itself around a ring by its front end with its nose almsot touching the ground.
mingjayde 2 years ago
Arabians are one of the best breeds for WP. Quarter horses have an extreamly unnatural headset. Also when you ugle horses carry themselves they really rock back and forth, like there having trouble picking themselves off the ground.

I show Quarter, but these horses are so pretty! And their tails are SOO long!
mrskipnattitude 2 years ago 3
okay, so I know this sounds stupid, but are those their NATURAL tails, or are those clip-on/braid-in tail extensions? Sorry, but I've just never known. If they ARE natural, how do you get them to grow so long???
leugereh 2 years ago
they are real tails , how you get them long is by keep them up in vet wrap and everymonth re- due and when how time is you wash the heck out of the horse and the tail . I show a mare that has a tail draging about 2 feet on the floor and when i ride her she lifts her own tail . QH has the loser tails .I show western !!!
with my half arabian

arabs aren't allowed to have fake tails. It's agaisnt the rule book. We keep ours in tail bags.

i Keep my appy's tail in a tail bag and i still have a fake tail...but why can't you have fake tails? whats so bad about it besides it looks better?
MorganRichey08 2 years ago
well us arabian, morgan people have rules and the say no fake tails so we follow that
vmorgans 2 years ago
Morgan, the Arab should be shown naturally, so that's why there are no fake tails. The only place it "really" matters is the in-hand classes. Other then that, there is just a lot of pride in a long mane and tail. That's why all of the disciplines grow them out.

they're the real tails (:
for arabs, your not allowed to use the tail extensions. they made it against the rules to put in in arabs manes/tails.

Arabians and QHs or Paints are totally different types of horses. I don't see why people expect the Arabs to move just like QHs, and why the QH people have to come here and bash the Arabs...

I perfer the quarter horse look...if they are trained properly they wont look like they are in pain. haha. but yeah, some look like their knees are broken!
rylee033 2 years ago
At least they've finally gotten away from that danged "peanut roller" style they had for so many years! That used to drive me batty.
The Arabians are doing what they're trained to do, and look how they're supposed to.
I've had Arabs for over 30 years, and love them. Not everyone has or needs to, but a little respect for each others breeds of choice would be nice!

Wow. Pretty horses, but I think I would die of boredom if I was a pleasure rider. That's why I go for speed events! (like barrel racing)

the difference between an arabian western horse and a western quarter horse is that arabians are more refined ..quarter horses look like fat cows
