You know it isn't like me to be inflammatory, but rather than let you think that I was so naive, I'd have you believe I never wanted you, I never wanted to.
There's no doubt that the whole song is a lie he's telling to make it hurt less. There's no other way to interpret those lines!
@SupaflyXX8 He said at a concert in 2009 that it was about a couple he and his wife knew... Something about the guy leaving the woman after being married for years and basically said he never felt anything for her the whole time. I wish I remembered more details, but my memory's a little hazy on it. I always interpreted the song as being told by an "unreliable narrator" in a way - that the singer is basically lying because he is hurt... I kind of like it better that way.
@BoratBastard i don't see it that way but it is an interesting way of putting it. to me, i see it like the narrator actually not genuinely feeling anything for his lover but underneath this dark and un-remorseful attitude, there is some empathy towards the lover's heart he's broken. but like i said, i never read it the way you did and i can see that.
His name is David Bazan. He has several projects. David Bazan, Pedro the Lion, and Headphones. He's a really nice guy. Just ask him how he does what he does so well.
The remix by Mint Julep brought me here. Gotta say, I love both versions.

A song that's only half true..

@BoratBastard You explain this song so much clearer and less "pretentious" than the dude in the piano version of the song.

@zarphixiot Agreed 100%. I have no idea why people look past this line that exposes this whole narrative as defense mechanism.

@BISChris yes, thank you guys, thats what makes the song have such humanistic depth. makes it a thousand times sadder too.

I think it's about Bazan's relationship with God ...... totally me projecting of course. (But he is an atheist now, right?)

@SupaflyXX8 Or maybe all those people were so blown away by the song that they didn't give two shits about the like button.

I remember the name of this song, but forgot how it went. I don't know why I would remember the title because it's really not that significant to me.
