    ...I love it!

  • School education has nothing to do with ho you are, my traditions and my upbringing will hopefully shine trough my children and i must say my children will always be proud of there mother's routes as those are the base of there up bringing.

  • I am from Madeira and by god im so proud, as we still have the joy and fun of tradition. My children are of mixed race but if i was able to send them to a school back home i would, i have been in many places but polite, respectfull, and always cheerfull has never come across as when you walk down a street in Madeira.

  • It's fun! For those who DON'T have to live in the neighbourhood... I have to put up with this anachronism display on daily basis. I cannot imagine anywhere else in Europe, in the XXI century, civilised citizens rendering themselves such examples of human exploitation! It is only possible here in Madeira because of the highest rate of functional illiteracy in Europe (60%!!!) These men cannot perform any other professional activity for they hardly have their fourth year of basic school training.

  • emmj you need to chill out a little..

Unlike you and I, not everyone was fortunate enough to go to school or hold a degree.

My point is, this "tradition" has been with us for many, many years and hopefully will stay for as many or even more years. It's is part of our culture, history and heritage. Yes having cars and "tobogan rides" on the same road, can often be a perilous affair.

  • sfgomes, with due respect, I think your views are far too condescending, and because of such views is that our country (and region) is amongst the most backward in Europe, our social problems are the most complex, our illiteracy rate the highest amongst the EU. I am not going to try to convince you; people must come to conclusions themselves.

  • But I live in Madeira, I see the problems everyday, I have a child and compare the education he receives from us and the education other children have (this people have no education). If you would not appreciate your children to have this future, please don't wish it to exist for others to be exploited... Why our country must be or remain a land of cheap services and cheap minds?!...

  • What type of assistance this people will be giving to their children when they arrive home? Are the schools sufficiently enabled and apt to revert this serious problem? Why Portugal did not manage what Ireland did (no matter the vast colonies, and wealth this country possessed in the past? Lack of quality perspectives. ByeBye

  • No tourist or local is forced to go on that ride .. it is there for whoever wants to take it, its tinny part of a major picture, Madeira tourism

Please don't "knock" these men down with your derogatory comments they play a small part in our tourism industry and in Madeira as a tourism destination ...

Same as the Ladies selling flowers or the men selling fruit in Mercado dos Lavradores or fruit stall around town...etc etc..

  • Think about it .... and an open mind enlinghtens our souls

  • This is logistically possible, and desirable, by decision-makers who know this people would become a social nuisance, were they not able to pull the sledges down the road, dangerously competing for space amidst the vehicles, compromising their knees after this continuous shock and stress down the road. It is such a poor display to see these guys in the end of the day drinking their lives away for they don't have any further horizons.

  • I took that ride in the 1960's. It was awesome but we had coble stone roads instead of the smooth ones shown in the video. Our basket-men were outstanding in how they could turn and stop the basket. Just plain WOW !! This is a ride everyone should take when visiting Madeira. One of the best parts of the whole visit.

  • Going there soon ....I hope its as fun as it looks

    Mike

  • Well ... its lile me. I lived more than 15 years in Alkmaar (Dutch city where the famous cheesemarket is) .... but I have never went to see the cheesemarket.

  • when I was there in Monte, during my holidays in Funchal, I asked an old native about going on a ride of tobbogan and he said that It was boring and It didn't worth the 15 € LOL
