  • @rockermanmatt hahaah....yeah the funny thing about Irony is not everyone gets it.....One time Randy was attacked buy a bunch of midgets throwing stuff at him all over the "short people" song....I really like Randys wit and always have. Randy in this era was just great

  • "The Kingfish gonna save this land." I've been a big fan of Randy's for a very long time, but this is the first time I've heard this song. It's about the "Kingfish," who was Huey Long, governor of Louisiana in the late 1930s, who was assassinated in the statehouse by a "lone gunman." The suck-ass media then, and now, portray Huey as a thief, a con man, and a bunch of other bad things. Randy, being born in Louisiana, knows that the media portrayal is bull shit. Huey Long was a great man.

  • @theoriginalbadbob actually he was a populist. He was a drunk, dirty, kick-back machine. He along with every other dirty politician in the GNO set back LA politics... well there all still dirty as hell. He used poor uneducated cajuns for their vote so he could gain more power in the state of LA than was intended for any single man. He would change the state constitution as he seen fit. He was assassinated by a medical doctor at the capitol building. He was a womanizing drunk.

  • @nocajun1981 Everything you recount about Huey is absolutely correct, but does that make him a bad guy? NOBODY could do business in LA, or many other states, without kick-backs, etc., so he wasn't the only one whose friends made money. The difference between Huey Long and everybody else was the fact that he helped the people of LA by building roads, hospitals, schools, etc., while putting thousands of people to work. People in Washington, D.C. were afraid of Huey; that's why he was assassinated.

  • Sheet Music for the whole album is available via Amazon I think.. Or just search for it on Google I found it there..

  • For some reason .. And I'm NOT complaining , Dutch TV Repeats this concert regularly , It's with The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra .. Infamous in The Netherlands.

  • I have my randy Newman ticket to see him LIVE with the Melbourne symphony orchestra this month July 2011.

  • I REALLY wish I had the sheet music for this song.

  • something really odd about a staid orchestra playing very regally on a song about Huey Long

  • Superlike!!!! His arrangement on this song is just unreal. Oh my goodness, those strings.

  • Hmm. Well said but it seems the original comment I was responding to must have been removed. This comment accused Mr Newman of glorifying Mr Long, communism, socialism, racism etc. and went on to defend capitalism as if Randy Newman were on a personal campaign to destroy Democracy and the free market. I stand by my first statement as I see no more agenda here than I see in Short People or any other Newman song. Reflections on racism and ignorance are about truth. Politics are never about truth

  • Evidently you haven't done your research very well on Mr Newman's "reflections" of racism and ignorance in the south because yes, he does see it through a political lens and then hands it back to us so we can see ourselves. It's brilliant and its the exact same thing he does at Pixar with cartoons.

  • I'm sure Mr Newman is not trying to glorify Huey Long or socialism or indeed, trying to make any sort of political statement at all. The "Kingfish" was who he was, a colorful piece of the American puzzle. It amazes me hpw some people are so small minded as to never ever be able to see or hear or feel anything at all except thru a political lens. Sad hateful people eaten up with bitterness.

  • @coolbrezx If you don't get Newman's tongue-in-cheek humor and sarcasm, then don't watch the video, dumbfuck.

  • @coolbrezx I assume you are referring to the very same prosperity and freedom we're all experiencing at this particular point in history? If so, I'll take Randy, the Kingfish and Socialism any day. And you sir, need to click your butt on back to Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck videos from which you surely came--and don't let the screen door hit your pointed little head on the way out!

  • Comment removed

  • @moserthecat Obama is just like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin, at least when you compare him to the Kingfish. People call Huey and Obama communist, but in Huey's case it's actually true. He was a communist and tyrant who used the national guard as his own personal police force, among other things. None other than FDR called Huey Long and his ideas "dangerous."

  • @streakerbabe Lets not get too carried away. This is just a sort of political cartoon set to music. The author assumes you have a sense of humor and can distinguish between sarcasm and fanaticism. It works this way: if you "get it", the song makes you laugh. If you don't "get it", the song makes you mad. I know it's not polite to laugh at people who don't "get" something, but sometimes you guys are just as funny as the cartoon--maybe more!

  • @streakerbabe Dangerous to Standard Oil maybe, but frankly I live in Louisiana and if I had to pick between men like Bobby Jindal, and Huey Long, I'd take the Kingfish any day. In this state everyone's dirty, at least Huey worked for the people of the state, not the Oil men, and if that's being a communist then lets get out the red paint.

  • My father, who lived in Amsteram, want all the way to Rotterdam just to see this concert. He always said it was the best thing he ever saw.

  • BP, Esso, the song will NEVER be out of date

  • You're a good man scofak, good man. Newman is what every songwriter should strive to be. Most modern songwriting is like a slap in the face of talent like this.

  • @Darrells15or Do you really think Randy Newman was a good *song-writer*? For the most part, he writes interesting, provocative lyrics. But the songs themselves are not very interesting musicially or rhythmically -- all that's interesting for the most part is what he seems to be trying to say, which he does without a lot of dressing or subtlety (here a flat-out obvious commentary on Huey Long).

Actually, I'd go out on a limb and say that this song is rather BAD musically! But it is interesting.

  • @thekaje2 I think he's an amazing song writer, even in the present as a "soundtrack artist", but I am mainly referring to the lyrics. I do think his melodies play an important role as they make the lyrics believable. Take "Sail Away" for exampe, that song sounds so much like an American Ballad, and the irony and sarcasm is so sublte that it is completely missed by some, I have to think in part it's due to the melody so perfectly matching what he's trying to convey.

  • @thekaje2 are you kidding? he is a renowned composer. He did the scores for most of pixar's movies. Listen to the monsters inc theme to see his composing talent

  • @VeganBoy13507 His score for "The Natural" is downright symphonic.

  • @thekaje2 uh huh, and pray tell, whom would you hold up to us as a better songwriter than poor old Randy? You're getting ready to type Barry Manilow aren't you? I bet you really think he IS the guy "who writes the songs that make the whole world sing"? Well not on this page he doesn't, buster! This page is for guys who actually DO write their own songs, so you can just...wait a minute...is that...? Are you wearing a Lady Gaga t-shirt?!!!! Get off this page right now!!!!

  • Great stuff. I don't suppose the video is available commercially?

  • thank you for uploading!

Haven't listened to Randy Newman in years. Still brilliant

  • Thank you Mr. Scofak

  • Can't think of another songwriter who understands American populism better than this boy. So glad I found these vids, and grateful to Scofak for uploading them.

  • Love this song/album, my Favorite randy Newman. Great performances thx for posting.

  • i love randy newman it's a shame he was never any bigger cause he's so damn tallented so it's a shame he didn't go any further than he did in the business

  • Randy was quite successful -late 70's early 80's then focused on movie scores where he has been extremely successful even winning a Grammy.

  • he sometimes bounces like stevie wonder -- only better

  • only whiter

  • great song

  • Scofak: Glorious selection from an album whose relevance (and wit) never fades. You want to hear genius at work, get hold of the CD that has a second disk containing rehearsals, out-takes & such.
